50TH ANNIVERSARY Turning back the clock: NCH’s first half century Penny and Bill Allyn Janet and Harvey Cohen Thelma and Earl Hodges Patty and George Kraus Colleen and Kirk Kvetko Sonia and Mac McDonald On March 4, 1956, Naples Community Hospital officially opened it doors, offering 50 beds and, as The Collier County News proclaimed at the time, “…The best equipment for diagnosis and healing that money can buy.” Exactly 50 years later, the NCH Healthcare System welcomed city and county officials, donors, volunteers, Board members, and residents of the community to celebrate that history and see how the promise of quality health care continues to be met. The March 4, 2006 dinner program was held at the Robert L. and Marie K. Telford Building for Continuing Medical Education. A proclamation by Naples Mayor Bill Barnett was read honoring NCH and its staff, physicians, Board of Trustees, and volunteers. Evening highlights included “Leadership for Quality,” an address by James L. Reinertsen, M.D. Dr. Reinertsen heads the Reinertsen Group, an independent consulting and teaching practice focused on improving clinical quality performance, and the author of Ten Powerful Ideas for Patient Care Improvement. He shared his thoughts on how best to ensure that patients receive the highest quality health care possible. The evening closed with the screening of Faces of NCH: Promises Kept, a video encapsulating NCH’s legacy of caring and progressive medicine. On Sunday, March 5, a similar celebration was held for long-time NCH employees, to thank them for their help in making the NCH Healthcare System the top-rated healthcare provider it is today. 4 PROGRESSIVE MEDICINE • SPRING 2006
Tower rises to meet fall opening NCH EXPANSION The rising of the Jay and Patty Baker Patient Tower at the NCH North Collier hospital presents a very visible sign of the progress of the massive expansion project there. However, as the tower stretches toward completion, less visible, but equally important work is shaping the future of health care in the NCH Healthcare System. Albert Alessi, M.D., a Family Practice Physician, is Chair of the NCH North Medical Executive Committee. As such, he and his fellow committee members receive weekly updates on the expansion project. “It is very exciting to be a part of this process,” Dr. Alessi reports. “The project continues on schedule. The framework of the tower is all in place, and the sheeting and siding are being installed. Most of the design for the patient rooms has been determined. They will be primarily private rooms, which is a major advantage. It is significant for patient care and for privacy.” Dr. Alessi notes that the tower should be ready for occupancy in the late fall of 2006. But the physical structure is only part of the expansion process. While the tower takes shape, he and his committee have been exploring how to make the best use of staff once the expansion is complete. “We are figuring out how to morph into a healthcare system with two large hospitals,” he explains. “Traditionally, the NCH North Collier hospital served as a satellite of downtown’s NCH Naples hospital. But there has been a lot of growth in the north—hence the expansion. We need to know how to deal with medical issues, such as which physicians will work at both hospitals and which will work at only one.” The committee has looked to other hospital systems for ideas but is determined to devise a structure that best suits the needs of this community. “We have an opportunity to think outside the box and try innovative approaches with our medical staff,” Dr. Alessi notes. “Once the tower opens, we will have some new structures in place. But we will continue to fine-tune them well into the future. This is a tremendous opportunity to get in on the ground level of the building of a new hospital.” When the construction and renovations are finished at both the NCH North Collier and Naples campuses, NCH will be a model of 21st century medicine, bringing the community cutting-edge technology, comfortable surroundings, and a medical staff operating at its best. Impression made John and Mary Anne Gamba’s first exposure to the NCH Healthcare System was at a reception where they listened to Dr. Allen Weiss talk about NCH’s emphasis on quality. This greatly impressed the Gambas and made them want to support such an organization. The Gambas chose to support the expansion at North Collier because these are the facilities where they receive their medical care.
