Quality Healthcare
in a Changing World.
2012 Annual Report
“At NCH, our responsibility is
to our patients, not to shareholders.”
The year 2012 was marked
by many milestones at
NCH. Our mission
to “help everyone live a longer,
happier, and healthier life” was
furthered by thoughtful planning,
precise execution and generous
philanthropic assistance. As
Foundation Committee
At NCH, we strive to provide our patients the highest quality, most technologically advanced healthcare
available today. But, in light of the ever-changing economic and political landscape, achieving this
gold standard of care is no simple task. In today’s world of fiscal belt tightening and shrinking
reimbursements from Medicare and private insurance providers, NCH, one of Florida’s only remaining
independently-operating, not-for-profit hospital systems, is facing a perfect storm of reduced revenue,
increased inflation and shifting patient demographics.
Now more than ever, our community needs access to excellent healthcare. NCH stands ready to provide
that care to all who walk through our doors. At NCH, our responsibility is to our patients, not to
shareholders. This direction is at the core of our mission today and guides us towards tomorrow.
Please join us over the next few pages as we highlight a sampling of the past year’s accomplishments.
You will hear from our CEO about how NCH has thrived amid gloomy economic conditions and how
we have strategized to face our future. You will learn of our newly acquired technologies and innovative
strategies, such as the implementation of Smart Rooms, our plans to improve neonatal intensive care
capabilities and the powerful alliance with the Mayo Clinic. You will also learn how we positioned our
system as a national role model for healthcare and increased our ability to provide charity care. And, you
will meet some of the people who made these advancements possible.
The mission of NCH may be expressed in a few words. Implementing that mission takes the
collective effort and determination of a vast array of resources and people working toward a common
goal. Because of such tireless dedication, our vision of becoming a world-class leader of excellence in
healthcare is well on its way. NCH’s success is the result of the efforts of every person who believes in
and supports our mission. Loyal investments of time and financial resources will keep us strong and
independent as our system moves forward in the face of challenging conditions. As we look back at the
past year, we are inspired by those who have found it within their hearts to
volunteer or provide financial support towards our continued success.
For this, we are forever thankful.
We hope you will enjoy the NCH Healthcare System’s 2012 Annual Report.
From the President & CEO
Our nation’s health care system will
continue to be stressed for the next
several years. Aging demographics
and a threatened economy, combined with
governmental reform, are altering the landscape of
healthcare delivery in unprecedented ways. Over
the next few years, NCH will
receive about $90 million less
funding through traditional
reimbursement sources. That’s
nearly 20% of our operating
budget. During the inevitable
restructure of healthcare
delivery and lowered
reimbursements, possibly 10%
to 20% of hospitals across the
country will either consolidate
or go out of business
altogether. Although we, too,
are having to do more with
less, NCH Healthcare System
will not be one of them.
In fact, NCH is going in the
opposite direction of these
gloomy national trends.
Like any hospital, we have
our own pressing challenges and our own set of
concerns for the future. But, we are happy to
report that NCH enjoys a strong position in every
measurable aspect of our organization.
“… we are
happy to
report that
strong position
in every
aspect of our
organization.”
forces. Our formula for the future must involve
the development and implementation of well
conceived planning that anticipates our needs and
the needs of our community. In this report, we are
pleased to share how we have managed to exceed
expectation despite difficult fiscal conditions.
It must be pointed out that
our geographic location has
been a major contributor
to our own well being.
Nestled in the heart of a
very generous community,
NCH has enjoyed vast local
support. Couple that with
a superb, seaside climate
and a high standard of
living attractive to medical
professionals and patients
alike, and little doubt
remains that Naples has all
the makings of a worldclass
medical destination.
It’s our job to take these
coveted ingredients, meld
them with our strategies, and
continue to create a premiere
healthcare organization in every sense of the
definition.
Part of that equation involves enhancing our
medical services through technology.
We are literally at the inflection point of an
s-shaped growth curve. We are headed up, and
that’s a very healthy place to be. Many factors are
responsible for our enviable positions both locally
and nationally. Excellence is no accident. We
believe in designing our future rather than leaving
it to be directed by happenstance and outside
We have finished converting all patient medical
records to an electronic format. Now, we are
creating a platform to share this information
with doctors and hospitals outside our system
at the request of our patients. Imagine being in
another corner of the country, or the world, and
having your vital information available to your
attending physician. This new database will be
enormously beneficial to patients and medical
staff once complete. The cost of keeping records
will be reduced. NCH medical practitioners,
through the use of smart phones and tablets,
will have critical information at their fingertips.
Patients will benefit from speedier retrieval of
test results, medication history, prior conditions
and treatments—all details of their medical
profile—whether they are here in Naples or
visiting another medical facility elsewhere around
the globe.
Our Health Information Exchange is also
operational. This bold, new system encourages
physicians to share clinical information in a
safe, secure cloud. As more physicians join, our
patients will benefit from the resulting exchange
of data, ideas and experiences.
NCH’s first phase of Smart Rooms came
online this year at North Naples Hospital
thanks to a generous donation. The use of these
Smart Rooms to administer patient care has
transformed the speed, effectiveness and safety
of healthcare delivery. Patient beds in these new
rooms are connected wirelessly into the system.
Caregivers and care recipients benefit from a
real-time exchange of information regarding all
aspects of the patient’s medical situation. Phase
one has been enormously successful. Now is the
time to bring this elevated level of care to the rest
of our system.
Creating contemporary facilities both in
functionality and aesthetics is another imperative
area of focus. We recently completed renovation
of our main Downtown Hospital lobby. If you
haven’t seen it, you owe yourself a visit. Updated
design features and ample open spaces create
a pleasing sense of modern sleekness in the
reception area, gift shop and café. Patients and
visitors notice the difference immediately. In
addition, we are expanding infrastructure by
adding two large operating rooms at the North
Naples Hospital, updating the Outpatient
Infusion Center, enlarging the ER and doubling
the size of our Neonatal ICU. Plus, renovations
in the Telford Building and Sugden Auditorium
are nearing completion.
As in years past, maintaining a high level of
patient satisfaction was a critical component of
our plan in 2012. What does that mean Well,
in addition to attracting the best physicians and
staff, and equipping them with the latest medical
equipment, it means remembering we must use
our hearts as well as our brains when we restore
a person’s health. We recognize that patients are
people, just as we are, with friends and family.
Our goal is to include them all in the healthcare
process, be transparent in our practices, educate,
handle issues and concerns, and in short, make
them feel at home as much as we can. It also
means to make sure our team follows best practices
in every single case. At NCH, we value comments
from our patients. Open communication is the
fastest way we know to improve our care. As a
result of our approach to patient care, satisfaction
ratings have been steadily improving.
In terms of lower mortality rates and length of
stay when compared to our peers, NCH ranks in
the top 10% in the nation. Our mortality rate
is approaching the lowest of any hospital in the
nation. We experienced only one central line
infection in all our ICUs for the entire year! And
ventilator-associated pneumonia has been zero
since February 2012. The list goes on.
Relationships with quality healthcare organizations
outside of NCH also serve to strengthen our
capabilities. We are now affiliated with the
Mayo Clinic. For a detailed listing of what that
means, please read the article on the NCH/Mayo
relationship included in this report. We also joined
forces with another outstanding player—Florida
Blue—the new incarnation of Blue Cross and Blue
Shield. This relationship puts us at the leading
edge of how healthcare will be delivered in the
future under healthcare reform. Florida Blue’s
involvement will help NCH improve patient
outcomes by providing the right healthcare at the
right time. Spending on healthcare in the United
States is equivalent to the fifth largest economy
in the world. The Institute of Medicine identified
at least $210 billion of that yearly spending as
unnecessary waste in the form of overtreatment.
Our partnership with Florida Blue will help us cut
redundant scans, tests, procedures, and the like, to
reduce the overall cost of care within our system.
So, has all this planning and hard work made a
difference The answer is “absolutely!” Once again,
our efforts in 2012 have paid off with measurable
results. Here’s a small sampling:
• The Society of Thoracic Surgeons placed our
Open Heart Surgery Program in the top 10% of
the country.
• NCH was the first hospital system in Southwest
Florida, and one of only five in Florida, to win
Hospitals & Health Network’s Most Wired
award for using technology to provide patients
the highest standards of safety and quality care.
• Becker’s Hospital Review named NCH North
Naples Hospital as one of the 100 Great
Hospitals in America.
• NCH’s Briggs and Whitaker Wellness Centers
have won the Southwest Florida Choice Award
for 2012 for the tenth consecutive year
• Moody’s has reaffirmed our A2 stable bond
rating.
• And, probably best of all, U.S. News and World
Report has once again ranked NCH Healthcare
System among the Best Hospitals in the nation
for the second time. We are the only hospital
in Southwest Florida to have achieved this
distinction twice.
Mayo Clinic Care Network
“NCH is
mission
driven, not
profit driven.
Financial
gifts, as well
as tireless
volunteer
efforts, allow
our system
to respond
to the
healthcare
needs of our
patients…”
Of course, everyone enjoys accolades and recognition. But,
at NCH, what we care about most are our patients and their
families. To us, nothing is more satisfying than when health is
restored and active lives are resumed.
We also take pride in our community and are honored to call
Naples home. Knowing that our institution is a vital economic
engine for the local economy is very gratifying as well. NCH
spent over $65 million on construction projects over the last two
years using local contractors. We anticipate injecting another
$96 million as we continue this course over the next three years.
Finally, we are steadily moving towards another goal of
becoming a medical destination. Today, one out of every eight
NCH patients is from outside Southwest Florida. We are
working hard to grow that number.
Now, sometimes the best medicine of all is a healthy dose
of reality. On that note, we fully understand that as a notfor-profit
hospital, the past year’s success at NCH was made
possible in part by the generous financial support of people
who care as much as we do. NCH is mission driven, not profit
driven. Financial gifts, as well as tireless volunteer efforts, allow
our system to respond to the healthcare needs of our patients,
even when those needs aren’t necessarily friendly to our bottom
line. Without these wonderful donations, our financial integrity
wouldn’t be nearly as high, and our geographic area would most
likely be void of many vital services.
If you haven’t done so, please join us in our mission to help
everyone lead a longer, happier, and healthier life. And, if you’re
already one of our numerous donors, 4,000 colleagues, 650
physicians, or 1200 volunteers, thank you for your continued
support as the NCH Healthcare System sets the standards for
excellence in healthcare now and into the future.
Respectfully,
One of the crowning achievements for
NCH in 2012 is our new membership
in the Mayo Clinic Care Network. As
a result of this relationship, our patients now have
the added advantage of access to Mayo’s highly
regarded expertise.
Mayo Clinic was established in Rochester,
Minnesota nearly 150 years ago and since then
has built and maintained a sterling reputation
among doctors and patients globally.
NCH and Mayo Clinic worked collaboratively
over the past two years to establish this new
relationship. The goal of the network is to help
patients gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic expertise
while continuing to receive their care close to
home, ensuring they travel outside the area only
when necessary. Mayo Clinic selects hospitals
for the network based on strict criteria. When
NCH joined, it was one of only seven members
nationwide and the only one in Florida. Mayo
has not acquired an ownership stake in NCH,
nor does it have a physical presence on campus.
Instead, NCH and Mayo work close together, in
new ways, to enhance the lives of patients.
NCH physicians and staff now have the ability to
connect with Mayo Clinic specialists and Mayo’s
clinical database to access medical expertise
concerning diagnosis and disease management
protocols. The relationship also presents
opportunities for expanded medical education and
the sharing of best practices.
In the future, the Mayo Clinic plans to elevate
its medical discoveries to therapies in three main
areas of focus: organ regeneration, healthcare
redesign, and treatment tailorization for specific
genetic backgrounds. NCH, our community, and
our patients will benefit directly from the groundbreaking
results.
Stephen Lange, M.D., Southeast Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Care Network
and Allen S. Weiss, MD, President and CEO, NCH Healthcare System, Inc.
The intense selection process involved scrutiny
of all areas inside NCH and we were delighted
to accept the resulting invitation. However,
our relationship with Mayo Clinic is a two-way
street. Mayo also looks to our organization for
innovation it can incorporate. We’ve already
provided an example of medical advancement
by sharing our Smart Room technology, an
innovation that helps nurses, care technicians, and
others with direct patient contact to provide safer
care, better education for patients and families,
and make everyone more efficient and effective.
NCH and Mayo share a common philosophy,
commitment, and mission to improve the delivery
of healthcare through the use of best practices and
evidence-based medicine. It’s an area we’d like to
expand over time. And, it’s another way NCH is
making Naples a global destination for medical care.
Allen S. Weiss, MD, MBA, FACP, FACR
President and CEO, NCH Healthcare System, Inc.
When we joined, NCH was one of only seven
members nationwide and the only one in Florida.
In the United States, over 50 million people currently live in conditions below the poverty line. That
figure represents roughly 15% of our total population. In addition to lacking the means to acquire
goods and services that the rest of the population may take for granted, the poor have much more
difficulty than most obtaining quality health insurance and paying for expensive medical treatment.
At NCH, our mission involves providing quality healthcare
to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. In fact, our two
hospitals alone provide 97% of the charity care in Collier
County. Although the cost associated with caring for nonpaying
customers stresses our operating budget, we won’t back
down from our commitment to care for those who need us.
After all, as a not-for-profit hospital, our responsibility is to
patients, not to shareholders. We feel access to healthcare is a
right to be shared by everyone.
Fortunately, many individuals in our community feel the same
way. Mr. David Wang is one of those people.
As a young boy, before immigrating to the United States, Mr.
Wang had an experience in his native China that forever shaped
Mr. Wang has come face-to-face
“Within a hospital it’s great to
long term strategic impact, but in
my case I tend to look for short term
In the long term, Mr. Wang feels regulatory
reform is needed to even the playing field
between not-for-profit and for-profit
healthcare entities regarding charity care.
But, in the near term, Mr. and Mrs. Wang
urge people with the means to intervene
directly as he has.
Mr. and Mrs. Wang are truly an inspiration
to those whom they have touched through
their financial support and ceaseless
volunteer efforts. Their work is vital in
helping all of us here at NCH fulfill our
continuing mission of charity care for
those in need.
expansion of NCH’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
On any given day at NCH, about twelve at-risk babies
are in need of the highly specialized neonatal care that
only the NICU can provide. The current nine-bed unit
has been outpaced by population increases and is in dire
need of expansion.
“The current NICU
is a very small space,”
says Jorge Perez,
MD, an NCH
neonatologist. “It
was built many years
ago. We’re delivering
approximately 3000
babies a year here. If
you look around the
country, around the
state of Florida, we are probably the smallest NICU, or one of the smallest NICUs, when
taking into account this number of births.”
When the NICU is at full capacity, NCH is oftentimes forced to transport newborns to
out-of-town facilities, creating an additional layer of burden on these fragile patients and
their worried families. The NICU situation caught the attention of Lavern Norris Gaynor.
A longtime NCH supporter, Mrs. Gaynor was dismayed that area families have the added
stress of travel heaped on their already difficult circumstances. So, she decided to step in.
Not only did Mrs. Gaynor spearhead NICU expansion fundraising efforts as our
Hospital Ball Honorary Chair, she also made a generous donation to purchase a vital
piece of technology for the NICU, an all-in-one neonatal healthcare station, the GE
Giraffe® OmniBed.
Mrs. Gaynor, a healthcare advocate who learned the importance of a strong local hospital
from her parents Dellora and Lester Norris, believes strongly that patients should not have
to leave town to seek high quality healthcare. Her stance is firmly aligned with our own
here at NCH. We feel a civic obligation to move forward with expansion plans for the
NICU, doubling capacity for high acuity newborns from the current nine beds to eighteen.
Our plans include a host of new benefits for our “tiny because it is unglamorous and
treasures.”
Excellence in healthcare is a common goal that NCH shares with medical institutions around
the globe. Medical doctors and technicians from different countries often align themselves
behind the notion that healthcare can be constantly improved. These healthcare “ambassadors”
often work with one another to advance medical practice by sharing knowledge, ideas, techniques
and treatments. The net effect is improved global healthcare practices and better outcomes for patients
around the world.
NCH is honored to have one such ambassador
right here in our own back yard—Dr. Janusz
Subczynski.
Born in Poland in 1928, Dr. Subczynski grew
up in a well respected family. His father was an
engineer. He attended private schools. Life was
good. That all ended when Hitler’s Germany
invaded Poland in 1939. His charmed life
became a waking nightmare lived on the run as
his family fled the horror spread by Nazi forces.
They escaped Warsaw and survived on their wits,
their ordeal so terrifying and compelling that Dr.
Subczynski wrote a book about it called In the
Shadow of Satan.
At the end of the war, the Subczynski family faced
new terrors as citizens of a Soviet satellite country.
Life behind the Iron Curtain was very difficult
for the young Dr. Subczynski. The freedom
he experienced as a boy had vanished. The
Communist Party controlled virtually all aspects
of Polish society. Dr. Subczynski found solace in
his studies, earning twin degrees as a Doctor of
Medicine and Master of Philosophy. Specializing
in neurosurgery, he graduated at the top of his
class but was blacklisted simply because he was
not a member of the Communist Party.
The next few years in Poland were particularly
harsh for Dr. Subczynski, though he finally
managed to beat the system and eventually
become a specialist of the Polish Board of
Neurosurgery. In 1961 he arrived in America with
just $6 in his pocket to be trained in stereotactic
surgery of the brain in New York under renowned
neurosurgeon Dr. Irving Cooper. Two years
later, Dr. Subczynski permanently immigrated to
the United States. He managed to smuggle his
parents to freedom some years later.
In America, Dr. Subczynski’s neurosurgical career
thrived. He obtained the title of Diplomate
of the American Board of Neurosurgery and
also became a Fellow of the American College
of Surgery. Over the next twenty-five years he
practiced in the Detroit area as an independent
neurosurgeon, finally becoming Chief of
Neurosurgery at St. John Hospital and Medical
Center. After that, Dr. Subczynski turned his
talents to teaching until he suffered a heart attack.
“The motive of my life
has been helping.”
Choosing retirement, Dr. Subczynski settled in
Marco Island in 1998, where he has spent his
time writing a total of four books and managing
the foundation he created
to oversee his philanthropic
efforts. As he began having
trouble with his heart once
more, Dr. Subczynski found his
way to NCH and cardiologist
Dr. Herman Spilker.
“He took care of me,”
remembered Dr. Subczynski.
“And, I am alive and functional
thanks to his appropriate care.”
To reflect his appreciation for the fine care he
received at NCH, Dr. Subczynski gave back,
setting up an endowment to benefit NCH’s
Naples Heart Institute.
“The motive of my life has been helping,” said Dr.
Subczynski. “I made money. I want this money
to be used properly and for a good purpose.”
Dr. Subczynski tagged his donation to specifically
benefit invasive cardiology. He feels that when a
person’s gift allows medical treatment modalities
and equipment to be modernized, it does more
than change the way a patient receives care. It
changes the person who gave the gift, by giving
him a new sense of meaning and purpose in his life.
“If they make a donation to the place of suffering—
they do something good. And, if they do
something good, it [will] be the best thing for them
because they will have a feeling of joy. When you
have that feeling, it’s very hard to describe. But it’s
a very happy feeling, a very right feeling.”
Dr. Subczynski and the NCH Healthcare
System share a mission to help those in need.
His wonderful gift and the support from our
community help us fulfill
that mutual goal.
NCH supporters are inspired to give in many different
ways. We deeply appreciate those who have helped
our healthcare system carry out its mission.
The backbone of financial support for any
not-for-profit healthcare system like NCH
is comprised of annual donors. We are
fortunate to have a committed and growing
base of these individuals. Even in the
absence of direct taxpayer revenue and
in the face of grueling economic times,
we have been able to dream boldly and
aspire to great accomplishments because of
the dependable yearly contributions
of our annual benefactors and three vibrant
Auxiliaries. The funds they generate
benefit NCH in critical areas system wide.
The Medical Diplomats Council is our most
prestigious annual giving society. This leadership
giving program was established in 2004 and
has raised close to $6 million in support for the
NCH Healthcare System. Currently, we are
proud to call over 400 dedicated individuals
Medical Diplomats. This esteemed group of
donors provides crucial annual funding for the
programs and services that ensure the best possible
care for all of our patients.
Each year, our Foundation invites new members who
have shown an outstanding commitment to provide
generous annual support to the NCH Healthcare
System. This prestigious council offers members
greater personal involvement in our decision making
process, as well as the opportunity to elevate their
personal healthcare experiences. NCH is interested
in hearing from our Medical Diplomats on how we
can grow a stronger healthcare system. The work
they do truly makes a difference.
NCH’s three Auxiliary organizations in Marco
In 2012, the Marco Auxiliary graciously donated
$23,500 to the Marco Healthcare Center. The
Auxiliary members were able to raise these funds
through their annual fashion show held in March.
This particular donation was made after two
successful fashion shows. Every year numerous
volunteers work tirelessly to dazzle the audience
with the latest trends.
Collaborative Effort
In 2012, all three Auxiliaries joined forces for their
second annual ‘Miles of Quarters’ campaign. The
campaign included a Wine Tasting in the Garden
of Hope and Courage and a golf tournament. The
$6,500 in proceeds benefitted Outpatient Infusion
Services (OPIS).
NCH would like to extend our gratitude to all
of our annual supporters, the Medical Diplomat
Council and Auxiliaries for their enduring efforts.
They really do make an enormous difference.
We would also like to extend an invitation to you.
If you haven’t done so, please consider membership
in one of these organizations to affect a lasting
impact on the health of our community.
Honor Roll of Donors
Annual Giving
We gratefully acknowledge the following individuals, foundations and
corporations that helped support the NCH Healthcare System on an
annual basis between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012.
As NCH Healthcare System moves forward across
the shifting landscape of healthcare reform and
demographic changes, we are uplifted by one
unfailing constant—the firm platform of support provided by our
donors. We consider all donations significant, no matter their
dollar value, because each one fuels our quest to provide the best
healthcare imaginable. In a world of decreasing reimbursements
and increasing costs, financial contributions are more critical than
ever as we prepare our bold plans for the future.
To cultivate our standing as a premiere medical destination,
NCH needs you on our team. We need your ideas. We need
your compassion. We need your generosity. Together, we can fulfill our mission to those here and
across the globe.
Here is a listing of the fine organizations, corporations, and people already inspired to join us as we
transform our mission into our reality.
Giving back to our community
At NCH, we are committed to our community. We
believe in living up to our civic responsibilities
in every way we can to better the lives of the
residents and visitors of Collier and southern Lee Counties.
To fulfill that commitment, NCH provides healthenhancing
educational programs and resources as a benefit
to our area.
FREE OR REDUCED
HEALTH SERVICES
Support of the Neighborhood Health Clinic
NCH helped the Neighborhood Health Clinic get on its feet
by first providing clinic space and laboratory services at no
charge, and then lending expertise in information technology,
biomedical technology, pharmacy and many other areas.
When patients present with clinical needs beyond what
the Neighborhood Health Clinic can offer, NCH provides
appropriate services to these patients.
P.L.A.N. – Physician Led Access Network
of Collier County
NCH has partnered with physicians in this community
initiative to offer medical services to the poor by providing
both inpatient and outpatient care.
Dr. John Briggs and Whitaker Wellness Centers
A number of fitness services are provided through both
NCH Wellness Centers at a discount or free of charge.
Health Seminars
Free health seminars are provided to the public at the NCH
Telford Education Center, von Arx Diabetes Center and at
various community outreach facilities.
Community Health Fairs & Testing
Complimentary or reduced-price testing, along with
educational booths at community health fairs, are provided
by a number of NCH service lines. Complimentary or
reduced-price screening tests, such as cholesterol testing, are
provided at many community events. At the Marco Island
Healthcare Center alone, thousands of free blood pressure
checks were performed last year.
Education
RNs
NCH Nurses are involved in educating future patients and
easing their minds about their upcoming care. Preoperative
seminars are held for those interested in learning more
about elective procedures. Many of our nursing leaders
participate in community boards such as the Naples Alliance
for Children and Drug Free Collier.
Clinical Nursing School
The clinical aspect of the nursing school of Edison State
College is provided at NCH. For years, NCH has sponsored
the Telford Chair of Nursing at Edison State College
and has always welcomed students of Edison State College
and Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology to our facilities.
NCH provides on-site classrooms for clinical education.
Nursing and radiology scholarships are generously
funded at both Edison State College and FGCU.
Spiritual and
emotional support
A medical event can affect the entire family. For families of
brain injury and stroke patients, our team provides monthly
guidance through support groups free of charge. NCH
has always provided exemplary pastoral care services. A
formally accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program
is now in place to educate members of the ministry in
the spiritual treatment of the sick.
THE GREATER GOOD
Community Affiliations
NCH is affiliated with several community organizations
that complement the focus of our programs. We are proud
sponsors of the American Heart Association’s annual
Heart Walk as well as the American Cancer Society’s
Relay for Life. NCH is also a proud member of The Spirit
of Women, a collaboration of hospitals and healthcare
providers that ascribe to high standards of excellence in
women’s health, education and community outreach.
Sharing Our Space
The Telford Education Center is available to not-for-profit
healthcare related groups such as “Mended Hearts” and those
that provide support for stroke and kidney patients. At the
Marco Island Healthcare Center, local residents use our facility
for community education and the Hospice support group.
Sharing Our Expertise
Members of NCH management serve on community
boards in various capacities. We also provide expertise on
other community issues such as workforce housing and
workforce development. NCH is furthering the skills
of our own healthcare professionals and helping others
seeking work to find it. Career days, job shadowing and
lectures at local middle and high schools enlighten students
about the many opportunities in the healthcare world.
Employee Giving
Our employees care deeply about their co-workers as well
as their neighbors. Not only do many NCH employees
give to our co-worker assistance program “Partners in
Caring,” but also to an annual Christmas toy drive in
which hundreds of toys are distributed to needy children.
In late summer, a school supply drive is conducted to
assist children in starting the school year off right. NCH
employees are also pacesetters for the United Way in its
annual giving campaign.
