“At NCH, our responsibility is
to our patients, not to shareholders.”
The year 2012 was marked
by many milestones at
NCH. Our mission
to “help everyone live a longer,
happier, and healthier life” was
furthered by thoughtful planning,
precise execution and generous
philanthropic assistance. As
a not-for-profit healthcare
organization, the successful
Healthcare System, Inc.
melding of strong leadership,
compassionate staff and steadfast
support is paramount to our ability to serve our great community.
Foundation Committee
At NCH, we strive to provide our patients the highest quality, most technologically advanced healthcare
available today. But, in light of the ever-changing economic and political landscape, achieving this
gold standard of care is no simple task. In today’s world of fiscal belt tightening and shrinking
reimbursements from Medicare and private insurance providers, NCH, one of Florida’s only remaining
independently-operating, not-for-profit hospital systems, is facing a perfect storm of reduced revenue,
increased inflation and shifting patient demographics.
Now more than ever, our community needs access to excellent healthcare. NCH stands ready to provide
that care to all who walk through our doors. At NCH, our responsibility is to our patients, not to
shareholders. This direction is at the core of our mission today and guides us towards tomorrow.
Please join us over the next few pages as we highlight a sampling of the past year’s accomplishments.
You will hear from our CEO about how NCH has thrived amid gloomy economic conditions and how
we have strategized to face our future. You will learn of our newly acquired technologies and innovative
strategies, such as the implementation of Smart Rooms, our plans to improve neonatal intensive care
capabilities and the powerful alliance with the Mayo Clinic. You will also learn how we positioned our
system as a national role model for healthcare and increased our ability to provide charity care. And, you
will meet some of the people who made these advancements possible.
The mission of NCH may be expressed in a few words. Implementing that mission takes the
collective effort and determination of a vast array of resources and people working toward a common
goal. Because of such tireless dedication, our vision of becoming a world-class leader of excellence in
healthcare is well on its way. NCH’s success is the result of the efforts of every person who believes in
and supports our mission. Loyal investments of time and financial resources will keep us strong and
independent as our system moves forward in the face of challenging conditions. As we look back at the
past year, we are inspired by those who have found it within their hearts to
volunteer or provide financial support towards our continued success.
For this, we are forever thankful.
We hope you will enjoy the NCH Healthcare System’s 2012 Annual Report.
