Open Water Swimming
Once your basic skills are strong, mix it up with open water swimming either as part of a
triathlon (swim, bike, run) or simply swimming in a lake. Open water swim events have
gained popularity since the 10K open water event was introduced at the Olympics in
Bejing, China.
How to Make it Safe and Fun
First, make sure you feel comfortable swimming in the pool and can swim
non-stop for 400 yards or more to increase your confidence in the water.
Take a class in open water swimming.
Unless the water is 77 degrees
or warmer, use a wetsuit to keep
warm and safe while swimming.
Buy multiple tints of swimming
goggles to allow for swimming in
cloudy or sunny conditions.
Don’t swim if you feel tired
or sick. Ear plugs or wax
can help you swim straight
and prevent vertigo, which
can be caused from colder
water hitting the ear drum.
