LED Lighting for Machine Vision 

Applications 

LATAB LED lightings are devices that can be 

used for a great variety of vision and industrial 

applications, e.g. inspection, testing and robot 

control. 

The LED light heads feature a superior light 

intensity and smooth lighting combined with long 

lifetime. 

The LATAB product family is highly modular and 

can be used in various combinations to optimize 

the light flow. 

All modules, light heads and controller units, are 

made for industrial applications. 

The units are robust, small in size and easy to 

install. 

Just connect the light head to a controller and the 

light intensity will be 100%, factory set. 

Short Guideline for LED Lighting 

LEDs are long-life components; however the 

effect of heating will decrease the lifetime. 

To increase lifetime, please keep following 

advises in mind when choosing LED lighting: 

Red LED:s present longest lifetime. 

Adjust light intensity to lowest usable level 

Keep ambient temperature low 

Controller: 

Choose controller mode in order 1-3. 

1 Strobe mode (strobe controller) 

2 Long flash mode (steady state controller) 

3 Steady state mode (steady state controller)

A warranty period of 1 year applies to all light 

heads and 2 years to all controllers given the

Back lights provide sharp silhouettes 

of objects for edge detection 

and even illumination of 

opaque and transparent targets. 

Standard sizes from 51 x 84 to 

207 x 516mm. 

Contour/ Outline of objects 

If only contours of objects are 

measured and if the lighting can 

be positioned underneath the 

object, the back light is the right 

choice. 

Dark field ringlight 

Dark fields are available in standard 

sizes from 58 to 281 mm 

in diameter with various cut-off 

angle. The working distansis 29 

mm max. 

Contour / texture of 

objects 

For the detection of edges and 

contours the dark field lighting ist 

the adequate solution. 

Ring light 

Ring lights provide a uniform 

even illumination. Sizes to fit all 

standard microscope objectives. 

Larger standard sizes ranging 

from 44 to 348 mm in diameter. 

Non-reflecing objects 

For standard applications and 

less demanding objects that, for 

example, don‘t reflect or don‘t 

have high requirements concerning 

the measurement accuracy, 

the ring illumination is used 

Line light 

Line lights are available in pretty 

much any length needed. Standard 

sizes range from 36 to 

492 mm. There are also watercooled 

LED line lights, which 

provide as much intensity as the 

fibre optic equivalent 

Non-reflecing thin or 

elongated objects 

Thin or elongated objects can 

also be illuminated by one or 

more line lights at a greater 

distance. There are single row, 

double row and four square line 

lights configurable for any application.

Lighting technique 

Illumination 

Coaxial light 

Coaxial lights only allow reflection 

from the flat surface into the 

camera which provides good 

contrast with glossy objects. 

Standard sizes range from 25 x 

25 mm to 145 x 145 mm. 

Dome light / tunnel light 

Dome or tunnel lights provide 

non-directional diffused light, 

which eliminates glares and 

shadows. Standard dome lights 

are available in sizes from 44 to 

348 mm 

Application 

Spatial shadowing objects 

For spatial objects may possibly 

occur shadow, influencing the 

results. Coaxial illumination can 

avoid these shadows by the parallelism 

of the image rays and 

light. The shadow will usually be 

reduced significantly 

Reflecting objects 

Dome or tunnel lighting produces 

diffuse light, and eliminates 

interfering reflections, comparable 

with a cloudy sky.

LED controllers: 

Reliable controllers are a prerequisite for efficient LED lighting. That’s why LATAB has developed an 

extensive range of its own controllers. 

These not only maximize the life time of the sensitive LEDs, but automatically adapt to the connected 

light head. The product features of the LATAB 

controllers are numerous: designs suitable for industrial use, adjustable light intensity, up to 4 channels, 

PC operation via Ethernet or other interfaces, 

as well as stand-alone solutions, either for steady state operation or strobe mode, with adjustable 

pulse durations from 50 μs to 1.5 ms.

Lights 

GENERAL 

The lights of LATAB are available in a wide range 

of types and sizes: 

Ring-, dome-, front-, spot, line-, dark field-, back-, 

coaxial- and custom design-lights. 

The lights are based on high intensive LEDs in 

different colors. 

Today we use high intensive LEDs called S- 

series of SMD type (surface mounted) with more 

intensity compared with the old hole mounted 

leds, H-series. 

The products built with these SMD-leds are in our 

assortment named SXX-series. 

On request the PAH-items are still available. 

The lights are easily installed - just connect the 

lamp head to the controller units and the light 

intensity will be 100%. 

Any type of lights can be used either for steady 

state or strobe mode. 

Due to LED technique it is possible to make the 

lights in different colors and RGB (red/green/ 

blue) 

Standard colors: 

UV (395nm), 

Blue (465nm), 

Green (520nm), 

Red (617nm), 

IR (880nm), 

White in different color temperatures 

RGB (red/green/blue). 

Custom design dome light with additional ring light on the 

top and 3 rings of leds integrated in the hemisphere.

Light beam angle 

Ring- and Darkfield lights 

The ring- and darkfield- lights manufactured by 

LATAB always has a diffuser in order to make the 

light beam even and homogeneous. 

This gives the opportunity to change the angle 

of the light beam by using the fundamental optic 

rules by changing the angle of the diffuser. 

Using this technique it is simple to make custom 

design beam angels. 

Darkfield lights 

The same rules as for ringlight is valid for darkfield lights. 

Adjustment of light beam, ringlight 

Standard angle is 12° 

Custom design from 0° to 40°. 

Adjustment of light beam, darkfied 

Standard angle is 80° (Optical axis) 

Custom design from 70° to 90°.

Ring Lights 

Ring lights provide a uniform even illumination, 

shadow free lighting. 

In order to avoid reflection some of these ringlights 

can be used in combination with polarization 

filters. 

These lights are supplied with brackets for 

Bosch- or Montech-profiles. 

The ring lights are housed in a black aluminium. 

For evenness and change of the beam angle the 

ring lights has a diffuser with possibility to change 

the beam from 0° to 40°. Standard angle is 12° 

Can be used either for strobe or steady state 

mode connected to LATAB control units. 

The best evenness will be achieved at a Working 

Distance according to table.

Ring light Ø 44 mm 

The best evenness of light will be achieved at a 

distance of 20-25 mm from the light. 

Mounting: Two alternative: 

By a small bracket, LAD37218 or 

By a standard lens adapter from Heliopan with a

Dome Light 

S-series 

A series of dome lights with high intensive leds, 

at least 50% more light compared to the well 

known PAH series. 

These dome lights are available in a wide range 

of sizes. 

Dome lights provide highly shadow free lighting 

and avoid reflection from reflective objects more 

than ring lights. 

The dome lights are housed in a black aluminium

As an option the CD-hole (camera hole) can be 

covered by an adapter in order to reduce the

RGB Light 

The RGB lights are available in ring and dome 

lights in the same dimensions as ring and dome 

lights. 

The RGB lights are build with high power 3 chips 

leds, red, green and blue, making it possible to 

use each color separately combined or white 

light. 

White light is achived by setting the 3 channels to 

same intensity level. See reference white balance 

sheet, black curve. Green is eye curve. 

For mechanical dimensions see specifications for 

RING/DOME lights. 

The same type of options is available as for the 

other ring and dome lights.

Tunnel Light Ø 100 mm 

A tunnel light with dome-like functions provides a 

highly shadow free lighting and avoids reflection 

from reflective objects more than ring lights. 

The lights are housed in black aluminium. 

The best evenness of light will be achieved as 

close as possible to the object. 

In order to avoid “Camera hole shadow” 

it is possible to use a coaxial-light together with 

this tunnel light. 

Available in different lengths from 119mm to 

371mm. 

On request the camera hole can be made at

Back light, profile based 

PAD-series 

A backlight based on al-profile system. 

The size is from 51x84mm to 207x408 mm. 

This back light family is available in 

red 640 nm and amber 617 nm. 

Amber is 2 times more intensive as the red one.

Coaxial Light 

A new series of red (amber, 617nm) coaxial lights 

with high intensive leds, at least 50% more light 

compared to PAH series. 

A coaxial light is used for sharp detection which 

requires a very even light over the whole area. 



The light has got a protective glass, AR-coated.

Control units 

General: 

The control units are based on constant current 

generators with a “plug and play” feature that 

automatically adapt to the connected LED-light 

for exact light intensity. 

There are two main types of control units 

Strobe controllers and 

Steady State Controllers 

Strobe controllers: 

Adjustable parameters for strobe controllers are 

light intensity and strobe pulse length. 

For PC-controllers also a trig pulse delay is available. 

Strobe controllers provide 5 times as much light 

intensity compared with Steady State mode. 

In strobe mode the pulse length is decided by 

internal set time from 50-1500µsec. 

Rice- and fall- time is a few µsec. 

Steady State controllers: 

Adjustable parameter for steady state controllers 

is light intensity. 

Steady state controllers are equipped with the 

“long flash” feature. 

Long Flash function is a kind of trigger-controlled 

light. Light start with trig pulse and last as 

long as the trig pulse is on. 

In Long Flash mode, Double intensity is available, 

means that light intensity is double standard 

intensity. In Double Intensity (DI) mode ONtime 

is limited to five seconds followed automatically 

by five seconds OFF-time. Shorter ON-time 

Double Intensity pulses are not limited, can be 

repeated at users demand. 

Rise time is about 1,5 msec and fall time about 

10-15 msec. 

PC-controll by Ethernet. 

This type of controllers are communicating by 

Ethernet protocol. In principle this allows an 

unlimited no of units to be connected to the same 

computer. When using the test program the number 

of units are limited to 8 units. 

Trig signal is connected to the unit by separate 

connector 

PC-controll by RS 232 

The RS232 interface is converted (within the 

COM-port connector itself) to RS485, enabling up 

to 16 units to be connected to the same COMport 

in a so called multi drop system. These units 

are delivered with a test/demo PC- software 

which can also be used in real applications. 

Test Program. 

The PC-control unit are delivered with a testprogram 

written in Visual Basic. 

The protocoll has a simple form why it is easy 

programmable by the user

The strobe control unit is microprocessor based 

and specially designed to control all types of 

LATAB-light heads. 

The controller is designed for “P&P” (plug and 

play). Just connect the LATAB light head and the 

controller automatically identifies the light type 

and give the lamp head maximum light intensity. 

Strobe pulse is adjustable in 16 steps. 

It is possible to adjust light intensity. 

Increasing of light intensity to 200% at 

50 and 100 µsec strobe by inside jumper.

Steady State controllers. 

The steady state control unit is microprocessor 

based and specially designed to control all types 

of LATAB-light heads. 

The controller is designed for “P&P” (plug and 

play). Just connect the LATAB light head and the 

controller automatically identifies the light type 

with an electronic sensor and give the lamp head 

maximum light intensity. 

It is possible to adjust light intensity by a trimmer 

inside the controller. 

The unique ”long flash” feature gives the opportunity 

to increase the light intensity to 200% 

when trig pulse is on. In order to avoid overheating 

the pulse length is limited to 5 sec, followed 

by a 5 sec cool down period.

A demo/Lab kit with all types of lighting for testing 

of what the application requires, 

Here is the direct ringlight as well as the squared 

direct lights and a double line light. 

The square lights is high density and gives very 

high light intensity. 

Two types of shadowufree lights, a dome light 

and a coaxial light. 

For identification shratces there is a darkfield 

light. 

All the lights are controlled by the tester with the

Options Polarization filter 

Polarization filter for ring light Ø 78 and 102 mm. 

The filter consists of two parts, one outer part for 

the ring light and one inner part for the camera. 

The outer part is fixed by three screws and the 

inner is turnable in order to adjust the polarization 

effect. 

The used polarization filter is HN38 with a total 

luminous transmittance of approximately 38% 

and is noted for its freedom from color distortion. 

Other types of polarization filters on request. 

The mechanical parts of the filters are housed in 

black aluminium.

Cables - light head 

Description 

As standard LATAB light heads are supplied with one meter cable. 

Other types and lengths of cables can be ordered. 

For other length add /XX to the article number. 

For extra flexible cable (robot cable) add ”R” 

Extension cables 

Description 

Two different kind of extension cables between the light head connector 

and the controller are available. 

One for steady state controllers (LKP1 XXXX) and 

one for strobe controllers (LKS1 XXXX). 

XXXX describe the length in mm. 

DIN-clips 

Description 

As an option DIN-clips are available for all control units. 

Two clips are mounted on the back cover of the controller. 

Just place on the DIN-rail and push for fastening. 

The clips are made of rugged glass filled, black nylon. 

Brackets 

Description 

Many of LATAB light heads have a bracket as standard. 

As an option it is possible to order different kind of brackets. 

SXX4 72YY extension brackets 

Description 

For PXX4 72YY brackets for extended wide are available. 

These brackets are straight. Ordinary brackets fit the holders. 

Polarization filter 

Description 

Some ring lights have polarization filters as an option.
