Mentoring Evening
We celebrate many traditions at the Eugene Waldorf
School, and one of the most personal and individual is
the Grade 8 mentoring project. Students are given the
opportunity to create the ideal assignment and pursue an
area of interest with the help of a mentor in the greater
community. The mentorship allows the students to give
their time to others while learning a new skill and learning
about themselves.
During the course of the mentorship each student will
have met with their mentor for about 30 hours, kept a
detailed journal of the experience, prepared a written
report and created a visual display.
Avalon Derlacki did her mentorship in the field of
physical therapy.
Celine Whiteley practiced with a professional archer.
Cherise Sullivan learned about being a veterinarian at
Emerald Valley Pet Medical Center.
Emma Rain studied cartooning and creating comics.
Jeremy Helland-Morse mentored in jazz cello.
Mitchell Beath learned about spray paint art.
Nicola Hyland mentored with a professional interior designer.
Sage McClosky-Potter studied cosmetology.
Sam Noble learned about and practiced swordsmanship.
Scarlet Munroe studied with a local artist.
Wil Kent worked and learned about herbs at Mrs.
Thompson’s Herbs.
Zane Kelley mentored and worked at Wandering Goat
Organic Coffee Roasters.
This group of graduating students will share their experiences
and the realization of their goals in an oral presentation
this Friday evening, April 18, at 7:00 pm in the
Great Hall.
Please join their celebration!

Summer Camp Program
This summer we have expanded our summer arts program!
The kindergarten program will be the same as last
year: two weeks of play, fun and work. The program for
grades one through five will also be two weeks this year,
and will run Monday through Friday. The first week will
focus on arts, crafts and culture from Asia, and the second
week will feature a “Hop Down to Australia.” Chris
Guilfoil will also be teaching an art class focusing on
animals for middle school students.
We will be offering three summer camps during the second
half of July:
A Taste of Waldorf Kindergarten: Ages 4–6
July 14 through 25
Around the World: Grades 1–5
July 14 through 25
Fabulous Beasts: Grades 6–8
July 28 through August 1
Brochures and registration forms are available at the Reception
Craigslist Fundraiser
Are you interested in a financial opportunity and helping
the school with a fundraiser? The Board is interested in
exploring the potential of reselling gently used items such
as furniture, electronics, etc. (no clothing), and seeks an
individual in our school community who is organized,
responsible, and has access to storage space. Parents and
other community members will be asked to donate items
they no longer want to the school. The individual will
transport and store donated items, list items on craigslist
or eBay, communicate with potential buyers, and ship
items. The individual would then receive 25% of the resale
proceeds. If you are interested in this new undertaking,
please speak to Molly in the Business Office.
College and Faculty Office Hours
Both the College and the Faculty have office hours available
for parents and community members to stop in and
bring any thoughts or concerns that they wish to share.
The Faculty office hours are held in the Starflower Kindergarten
on the first and third Monday of each month,
from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. A College member is available on
the second and fourth Mondays at the same time, but in
the educational support room across from the first grade
classroom. If you or anyone you know has something to
discuss, please come by or put a note in a faculty/college
member’s box. Specific dates are on the community calendar
on page one for your information.
National TV Turnoff Week
Mark your calendar for this year’s National TV Turnoff
Week from April 21 through 27. Our school will honor
this international impulse with a service project on Saturday,
April 26 at Howard Buford Park, on Mt. Pisgah, and
with a special open house puppet show for the younger
children the same day. Also, we encourage parents to
attend a symposium hosted by The Village School:
Perspectives on Media and Child Development
Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 pm
The Village School, 2855 Lincoln Street, Eugene
Vendors for the May Faire
This year we will be welcoming vendors at the May
Faire. If you or someone you know creates beautiful
handmade goods, and would like to have a small booth,
please notify Andrea in the office. Vendors need to provide
their own booths (10ft x 10ft maximum). Booths
will be located on the playing field outside the garden.
Items intended for sale can be brought to the Reception
Office for approval by a handwork committee. We ask
that 20% of gross sales be donated back to EWS.
The May Faire planning committee meets at 8:40 am in
the community room on Thursday mornings in April.
Please join us with your input and your enthusiasm!
The May Faire is on Saturday, May 3. Set-up will be after
the regular school day on Friday, May 2. If you have a
packet for your class’s booth, please post your sign-up
sheet on the beautiful spring bulletin board in the community
room. If you are a class parent, please sign up for
a shift! It takes our whole community to make a faire...
Alumni Evening
Please join us Tuesday, August 29 th at 7 pm for an evening
with a panel of our Waldorf graduates. They will
talk about their time here at the Eugene Waldorf School,
their experience transitioning to high school, and their
plans for college and beyond. The evening will begin
with introductions and brief biographies from the students,
and will also include time for questions.
In an ongoing effort to keep in touch with our graduates,
we recently sent out an alumni survey. We will be featuring
some of the responses in this space for the next several
weeks. It is fascinating to see where their lives have
taken them!
Come Garden and Picnic at Mt. Pisgah
On Saturday, April 26, from 9:00–12:00, Eugene Waldorf
School parents and children have been invited to help in
the Friends of Howard Buford Park efforts to preserve native
seed stock in the Willamette Valley. The organization
has propagated thousands of container plants, both for sale
and for stocking future production beds. Last year during
TV Turnoff Week, a group of our parents and children
spent a sunny morning working, transplanting and mulching
beds. This year, the timing works out quite well for a
picnic lunch afterwards.
Please bring appropriate clothing for the elements, water,
and a picnic lunch. This is most appropriate for children
3 rd grade and up, though siblings are welcome if supervised.
There is a sign-up sheet on the 5 th grade section of
the bulletin board by the parent mailboxes. Feel free to
contact Marina Taylor in the office with any questions.
No Potatoes in May!
Just a reminder that there will be baked potatoes for only
two more weeks! Grade six has been busy serving those
yummy potatoes, but as the weather warms, it is time to
turn to other projects. Please plan to have wholesome
foods in your children’s baskets for both lunch and snack
if they are here past 12:30. Potatoes will return when it
starts getting cold in the fall, offered by the new Grade 7!
Parent Council Corner
Parent Council met on April 14. Carolina Allen, Molly
Wilson, Heather Heater, Karen Tyler, Melanie Glock,
Sara Spahn, Carolyn Munroe, Steve Lasky, and Penelope
Jacob attended.
We discussed at length the importance of the Annual
General Meeting. This is an opportunity for the community
to dialogue and take part in Board elections. We also
discussed ideas for TV turnoff week, and planned a project
for May Faire.
Molly presented an idea for greening up our school,
which was enthusiastically received. We continued discussion
on ways to encourage classes to choose their next
year’s parent council reps this spring.
The next parent council meeting will be Monday, May 12
from 3:30 to 5:00 pm in the adult education room. After
school care is free while you are in the meeting. Sign up
ahead of time in the office.
