EWS Achieves Oregon Green School Status!
Congratulations to our faculty, students and parents! This year we finished the application
process to become an entry-level Oregon Green School. What does this mean for
us Well, we have demonstrated our commitment to reducing waste at our school, and
have set some measureable goals for the future. As a result, our school has earned a
$500 Incentive Grant that will be used to further our Green Team efforts at the school.
What did the application process entail It included a waste audit of our daily trash
generated. Thanks to Maestra Raquel for assisting in the sorting process, and to Mrs.
Taylor and Grade 3 for assisting in weighing and measuring the trash. It also included
tracking/evaluating our trash and recycling levels, reviewing our school's water and
electricity usage, and completing the application where all of our current practices
were reviewed and documented. Many thanks to Eli Munroe who started this process a
few years back, and all of the parents and staff who contributed in some way this year.
We have set some goals for the coming school year. One of the goals we are very excited
about is a new recycle station which will give us the opportunity to organize and
recycle many items that are currently going in the trash. The station will collect:
Styrofoam 'dead' pens art supplies electronics wood fabric scraps
scrap metal redeemable glass bottles broken pottery hard plastics
plastic bags plastic strapping
Yes, we have all of these items at our school!! Some of these items are being collected,
but the station will allow us to organize the items, create a system for distribution,
and provide an area to collect items for donation and/or exchange within the community.
Other goals we have set are: creating re-use bins for the classrooms (collecting
some of the above mentioned items), educating our community on the new recycle
station, reducing energy consumption in the evenings and installing a rainwater catchment
system in our garden.
We are doing great as a school overall! We received positive feedback for many of our
practices, including using reusable lunch containers, cloth napkins and towels, our compost
and recycle efforts, and reuse of materials.
We are grateful to Joshua Frankle and Mel Bankoff of Partners for Sustainable Schools
for leading us through this process. Mel and I began our discussions of the Green School
application at the 2010 Winter Light Faire. We finally see our vision manifested!
I look forward to continuing our work to further reduce waste, bring education and
awareness to waste management, and to see our school fulfill the goals we have set. If
you are interested in working with the Green Team, please contact me.
With gratitude,
The Eugene Waldorf School would like to take a moment to bid farewell to several beloved
teachers and staff. Thank you to our dear Title I teachers, Cindy Biboux and Janet Dunham,
for their years of dedicated reading tutoring to many children in the school.
Amy Green will still be busy in many areas of the school, but we will greatly miss her smiling
face and gracious service in the reception office. We thank Lara Colley for bringing so much
organization and efficiency to our site maintenance.
Thank you to early childhood assistants, Indre Noreika and Margot Ogsbury, who have supported
our little ones with care and love. Allison Wall is graduating from WTEE and our afterschool
program to take a sixth grade Waldorf class in Vermont. Congratulations, Allison!
Olive Wells, who has been a supportive presence in our aftercare program this year, will be
moving to Spring Valley, NY to begin her Christian Community seminary training.
Kathryn Harris, our early childhood aftercare teacher, will be spending time in Hawaii this
summer and offering private nanny care on her return. We thank her for her big heart and
dedicated attention to the aftercare program this past year.
We send our very best wishes and deepest gratitude to Judi Lamb, who has been teaching in
the preschool at EWS since 1998. Judi has dedicated herself to this work and will be sorely
missed by colleagues, parents, and most especially, the preschoolers. We thank her for all
she has brought to the school and to the preschool program.
To all of these wonderful community members, please know you always have a place in our
hearts and you will be greatly missed. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
Thank you
We would like to give a big round of applause and thank you to Mazzi’s for supporting our school
during the Mazzi’s dinner fundraiser on May 13. Our school was able to raise $500 that evening.
We particularly appreciate not only that Mazzi’s brings such a great and consistent support to our
school, but also the rare opportunity to get together in a more relaxed environment, enjoying a
lovely dinner and a fun time.

Positions Open for 2013/2014 School Year.
to join teacher Robyn Mundrick in our enhanced early childhood afternoon program for the 2013-14
school year. The position is Monday through Friday, when school is in session, from approximately 12:00
pm to 4:00 pm.
trained. If you would like to apply, please submit a cover letter, a resume including a short biography
and a list of references, with phone numbers, to Marie-Christine Lhomond, or to the business office, by
Wednesday, June 12.
Aftercare Teacher Needed for Next Year: We will have one opening in our grades after care
program for the 2013-14 school year. The position is Monday through Friday starting at 12:15 pm. If you
would like to apply, please submit a resume to Molly Wilson in the business office or email her at
molly.wilson@eugenewaldorf.org. Please feel free to speak with Molly if you have any questions. We are
also seeking people for our substitute list. We find that we often have a great need for additional help
throughout the year.
We look forward to hearing from you!
I would like to take a minute to thank each one of you for your generous contribution towards our Annual
Giving Campaign. This year our community gave more than $19,000 in donations thanks to the commitment
and dedication of supporters like you.
Our goal still remains to raise a total of $25,000 so we can fulfill all the visions that we have for this
school year.
The end of the school year is just around the corner, and my aim as your Funds Development Coordinator
is to continue reaching out to businesses and individuals in the community to nourish our relationship, and
to gain their respect and support. Our success in reaching out to the community can be accelerated if my
solicitation is supported by a personal connection. Can you serve as a bridge by introducing me to someone
in the company where you work, a friend that has a successful business, or any other contact who you
feel would be interested
I believe we need to rethink how we view giving and receiving. We must be committed to building a bridge
to the outer world, to look beyond our garden gates. We need to make new friends, to partner and to look
for additional ways we can participate in the larger community. How do we accomplish this We must be
willing to lay some groundwork.
Once this groundwork has been laid, our school will have a stronger local identity and presence. We will
see where we can best serve. The motto, “as we give, we shall receive,” becomes a reality.
Thank you once more for playing a unique part in developing a social renewal in education. Let’s reach out
to the community and close the school year with a glorious success!
In gratitude,
Ana Granados
Funds Development Coordinator
The Teacher Conference Funds workgroup would like to share our gratitude for funds made available for teachers
to attend conferences throughout the year.
With generous gifts from these sources this year we have been able to support nine teachers who will deepen and
refresh their teaching for the coming year: $2000 from Waldorf Teacher Education Eugene and approximately
$500 from class fundraising from sales of potatoes, rice and beans, and crepes, and from the Talent Show.

so he will be attending LCC next year.
