As one of humankind's principal guides, Michaelis viewed as a protector of the light, a facilitator of cosmic intelligence and akeeper of time. The festival takes place near the autumnal equinox, a time that marksthe changing of the seasons, and our transition from the expansive energies of summerto the slower pace and contraction that we intuitively feel during fall. The image of St. Michael, with his golden sword piercing the darkness, encourages usto find our own courage and strength to face the darkening days. In autumn, the earthbegins to draw into itself. We also begin to draw into ourselves in the winter mood ofinner contemplation. When we look within, that is where our dragons can lurk. Weneed courage not only to deal with the outer cold and darkness, but also to lookwithin and to shine light on those personal challenges we face as evolving human beings. When we contemplate the deeper inner meanings of our festivals, a nourishingand sustaining quality arises in us which enables us to enrich our own lives, the livesof our families and our community. We will offer our celebration of Michaelmas on Thursday, September 29th, at 11:15a.m. The grades children will perform the play of "St. George and the Dragon" on thelower field. The play is a depiction of St. George taming the terrible dragon that hasbeen tormenting the community. In addition, there will be games of courage andstrength for the children. Afterwards, the children will return to their classrooms tochange out of costumes. We ask parents to pick up their children at their classroomsat 12:30 p.m.There will also be a community picnic afterschool that day. As usual, the 8th Grade will beselling pizza and onigiri. This is a great time toreconnect with friends and meet new familiesin the school community. Please join us for allof the festivities!"Unconquered hero of the skiesAgainst the foe with us ariseThine aid we prayThe foe to slaySt. Michael."~ from the playArtist: Mary Settegast;Compliments of the Denver Waldorf School
