Someof the reflections we heard from our accreditation site visit inspired us to workwith this theme. For example, we were commended on our:Devoted parents, enriching the school with their warmth, vibrant engagement and donation of skills and time; and...Engaging a community with a large variety of resources. The team also recommended that we:Recognize and acknowledge the abundance present in the school. We feel that these insights will provide a wonderful springboard for further sharing. This will be a facilitated conversation where we hope to hear from manymembers of our community. Please join us as we discuss these and other ideas. There will also be an opportunityto hear from those people working in various key areas of the school: development, outreach, site and financesWe welcome all association members to join us for the election of five boardseats. At this important time in the life of the school, we have the opportunity toconsider several well-qualified candidates for the Board of Directors. We needyour turnout to make this happen! Our bylaws do not allow for voting by memberswho are not present; however, if you cannot stay for the entire meeting, pleasecome by to vote! Ballots will be available from 6:30 pm until the voting closes at8:20 pm. Free childcare is available. Please sign up in the office by the end of theday on Friday, May 24.

The letters that follow are from candidates who are asking to be considered forthe Board. These letters are one of several means available to community members whowish to make informed choices about the candidates. In addition, we encourage parentsand faculty to attend the Annual General Meeting (Wednesday, May 29, at 6:30 pm in theGreat Hall) to hear directly from the candidates.A third opportunity for assessing candidates comes in the form of a “recommendation” fromthe Board of Directors. The school’s bylaws call for the Board to make recommendations tothe community about the candidates. The intention behind making recommendations isthat the Board is responsible to ensure it is able to continue working effectively on behalf ofthe school. Board members can consider a variety of factors in making a recommendation. They may look at specific skill sets that are needed, reflect on a candidate’s history and experiencewith the school, consider possible conflicts of interest, as well as make assessmentsabout intangibles such as a candidate’s collegiality, respect for confidentiality, andcommunication skills. This year, there are six open board seats and five candidates. The Board is pleased to recommendall of the candidates who are running for election. Steve Brodsky and Spencer Bugbeyare our current Board Treasurer and Vice-President, respectively, and are seeking electionto their second terms. Roger Kline, Charlie Tilt and Alycia Fahr-Zarlons are running for thefirst time. We are so grateful that these parents have stepped forward to be of service tothe school. We encourage you to take a moment to read their letters of interest.Nominees who are elected to the Board at our Annual General Meeting will join current director,Shannon Reilly, Board President, as well as David French and Atta Turck who are ourcollege board members. We hope that all community members will join us next Wednesday evening to take part inour annual meeting. We will offer childcare to families who sign up ahead of time at thereception office. The meeting begins at 6:30. Even if you cannot stay for the entire evening,we urge you to come and vote for the new board members. Let’s all show our support forthese parents who have stepped up to one of the biggest volunteer roles in the school!Dear BoardI am writing to express my wish to run for another two year term on the EWS Board. I have spentthe last two years sitting on the board. I also support the Funds Development committee and helpon the Finance Circle.During this time I have learned so much about the school and how it operates. Of the many thingsI have witnessed, what has made the biggest impact on me during this time, is being a part of anincredible love for our school. I see everyday the passion of our teachers and the dedication ofour administration. I watch in awe as parents give so much of themselves to make the school abetter place. This is a gift that I cherish and I feel blessed to be sending my daughter to this wonderfulschool.I would be honored to serve another two years on the Board.Thank You,Steve Brodsky

P a g e 3To the Board and EWS Community,It is my honor to submit my interest in returning as a Board member at the Eugene WaldorfSchool. I am the father of River and Rosemary Bugbey, both students in Jeannie Schwanekamp's5 th grade class. Professionally, I am a registered landscape architect and owner of a small studiolocated in Elmira. It is fitting that the renewal of board member terms takes place in the spring. I am excited aboutthe enthusiasm and growth that our Board may see in this coming year, and I would very muchenjoy being a part of that new configuration.During my first year as a board member, I served as secretary. I learned a great deal about theorganization of the school and developed an understanding of the way the school functions bothdaily and annually. My second term shifted to the V.P. Role, and my energy was able to shift toother tasks carried by the Board including the accreditation process. I also served on committeeswithin the school such as the Site Committee and, more recently, as a board liaison to theGolden Goose. With my renewed commitment to the school, I plan to shift my attention from the site to otherimportant matters in P.R. & Enrollment and Funds Development, and feel that I have the energyand skills to help foster the health of our student enrollment numbers. It is my goal to work withthe P.R. Committee to develop new strategies for increasing the positive exposure of our schoolto a larger demographic within Eugene and surrounding areas. I will also continue my outreachefforts to potential donors and funding opportunities. I will also advise the Site Committee asneeded.I would very much appreciate the opportunity to serve on the Board for another two year term, and I ask for your support. Thank you for your consideration.Spencer BugbeyDear Board of Directors,I would like to formally state my interest in becoming a member of the Board of Directors for theEugene Waldorf School (EWS). My family and I are committed to Waldorf education and to theEWS community as a whole. I feel I would add value to the Board through my individual dedication, passion, and compassion for our community. My relevant professional experience lies in the areas of business administration, risk management, capital investment planning, multi-year budget planning and prioritization, and emergencypreparedness. I feel these skills would benefit the board and the Eugene Waldorf School community. My board experience includes serving as a board member of the Western Generating Agency aswell as being part of the senior management team of the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB)who reports to the publicly elected board of commissioners.I have attended multiple board meetings and have been directly involved in the Waldorf communitythrough both EWS and Hazelwood House for the past five years. Thank you for your hardwork, I look forward to the opportunity to assist you and our community in a board capacity goingforward.Sincerely yours,Roger Kline

P a g e 4Dear Waldorf School,I am letting you know of my interest in serving on the Waldorf School board.I am motivated by the love of the School that has developed over the 16 years that Julie and I have had our children attend, and my interest in seeing the School flourish and further develop for the future. My professional and personal endeavors have been many and varied. I have a degree in Agricultural Engineering from CalPoly in San Luis Obispo, have been a self employed professional woodworker for 22 years (ending in 2003), and have offeredand led Vision Quest experiences annually for the last 15 years. My wife Julie and I have taught residential coursesin Permaculture, Organic gardening, and personal growth. We lived for 5 years in an Intentional community prior to movingto Eugene, where I learned a tremendous amount regarding consensus, group process and operating a non-profit. Forthe last ten years, Julie and I have owned and operated Hummingbird Wholesale, selling organic bulk food and groceryitems to stores from Seattle to San Francisco, during which time we have grown from 2 employees to the current 37. Ihave two daughters, Azara (14 years) and Ariel (21 years), and have been married to Julie for 14 years. I love gardening, wild nature, helping people discover their passion, and a good story.I am hopeful that I can use my understanding of community, business and communication skills to play a useful role onthe Board. All my best,Charles TiltDear Board Nominating Committee,Please accept my application to sit for election to the Board of Trustees for the two year period of May 2013 throughMay 2015. It would be an honor and a pleasure to serve the school and our community in this role. Please allow me toshare a bit about myself and our family so you can understand my background and why I feel so strongly about supportingWaldorf education. Our family joined the Waldorf community seven years ago, in 2005 when our daughter Iman began at the Rosebud Preschoolwith Ms. Lamb. Iman is now a thriving fourth grader with Mr. French's class, and is eagerly preparing for the SilverFalls Potlatch this month! Our beautiful son Reza came to Waldorf while still an infant, when we attended the RainbowBridge program with Ms. Marion. He is now in the first grade with Mr. Stearns, and is growing and developing beautifully. My husband, Dore' came to the U.S. from Jakarta, Indonesia to study English and business at the University of Oregonmany years ago. We enjoyed running an Indonesian Food Booth together while we were still in college. Dore' now worksas a chef for the University of Oregon at one of the main international student housing facilities. I have a degree in EnglishLiterature/Folklore and Ethnic Studies. I taught English as a Second Language to students of all ages while I workedabroad in South Korea. However, most of my career has been focused on international development work and supportservices including adoption, as well as marketing and fundraising for homeless and at-risk children and families with alocal non-profit organization. I have had the wonderful opportunity to travel and work with programs that serve childrenand parents in India, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Uganda, and Thailand. I bring with me organizational experiencein policy and procedure development, report writing, fundraising, and event planning. I am a strong advocatefor children and their families, which is one of the reasons I feel so fortunate to have learned about the Waldorf methodof education and Rudolf Steiner's philosophies that support it. The Eugene Waldorf School, the treasured staff and thegenerous community here is something I wish that everyone could experience. As a Eugene Waldorf parent and community member I have served a variety of different roles at the school. I have beenan active class coordinator for three years, and have been directly involved with school events, fundraisers, field trips, class activities, craft circles, scrip sales, office mailings, site work, and other related tasks. My husband and I have assistedclasses in cooking/ baking and also as a guest speaker on Islam during a religion block. We facilitated the internationalvisit of two 6th grade students from Indonesia this past year and are so grateful to be able to share Waldorf on that level. It is such a pleasure to be a part of this process that invests so much in all of our children. This community and school hasreally become an extended family for us and we are fully committed to supporting it however we are able. It is my hopethat you will support me in filling this role on the Board of Trustees so I may contribute to the work that needs to bedone to enable the school to flourish, and provide a sound future for all the children here—now and in the years tocome.Thank you for your consideration,Alycia Fahr-Zarlons

From the College and BoardDear EWS Community,Parent Surveys for AWSNAP a g e 5Each spring, as we begin to wrap up the school year, the EWS College and Board evaluate the school's currentprograms and plan for the following year. For 2012-2013, the school began a new music program with AnthonyAllen, welcomed Dr. Lisa Del Alba as our School Doctor, continued to increase faculty and staff salaries andbenefits, and much more. Also this year, EWS completed some necessary and expensive repairs around thecampus. These budgetary factors, along with reduced enrollment in our early childhood programs, haveprompted the College and Board to find creative and resourceful solutions so that we can continue to offer thebest programs possible for the 2013-2014 school year. The Rosebud Preschool will no longer be open for the 2013-2014 school year. While our three kindergartenclasses will continue to enroll children 2 1/2 years and older, we will no longer have a classroom dedicated onlyto younger children. As a result of these changes and some very difficult decisions on our part, Ms. Lamb willnot be teaching at EWS next year. With deep respect, we are grateful for Ms. Lamb's many years of care anddedication to the school and children of EWS. We will miss her and the warmth she has brought to the RosebudPreschool, and we wish her the best in all of her future endeavors.Afternoon program: As our early childhood program adjusts to meet our current enrollment, we are offeringan enhanced program for care in the afternoon. This program will supplant our afterschool care program forpreschoolers and kindergarteners, and will be held by a trained and experience Waldorf teacher. We are developingthe curriculum and schedule for this program, and we will have updates available soon. (If you have anyquestions, please see Valerie Perrott or Molly Wilson.) As always, thank you for holding our school's growthand development with us.Sincerely,The EWS Board and College of TeachersThank you again to all of the parents who responded to the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America(AWSNA) survey as part of our site visit for accreditation. You had many insightful questions and some usefulsuggestions! We will be responding to some of those in the Tidings from now until the end of the year. Here isour first installment:National Tuition Comparison and Major Expenses at EWSMany parents wondered why the tuition is so high and yet others of you wondered how the school manages onso little money. Here are some national figures from the 2011-2012 annual financial survey conducted byAWSNA. (The figures listed are an average of what schools charge in first through eighth grade.)The average tuition for elementary education at a member Waldorf school in the United States and Canada is$13,480. There are eight schools nationally with grades tuition between $17,000 and $18,000 a year. Anyguesses where those schools are? In order of most expensive, they are: San Francisco, CA; Baltimore, MD; GardenCity, NY; Spring Valley, NY; Beverly, MA; San Rafael, CA (Marin County); Lexington, MA; Northridge, CA.The five lowest tuitions nationally range between $6,500 and $8,111. The lowest tuition is in Viroqua, Wisconsinat the Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School. The other locations, starting at the most affordable: Akron, OH; Calpella,CA (Mendocino County); Bellingham, WA; and Eugene, OR.80% of EWS total annual expenditures goes to cover salary and benefits for the faculty and staff who bring yourchildren this education each day. Interestingly, we are the fifth lowest tuition nationally and our teachers arepaid the fifth lowest compared to their national colleagues. Our Annual General Meeting, and any board meeting, present opportunities to learn more about the school's budget. The Eugene Waldorf School, a non-profit organization, has a long tradition of maximizing every dollar to bringthe highest quality programs. There is a constant tension between keeping tuition affordable and paying ourteachers a living wage. We are thankful to everyone who together creates this community: parents, childrenand teachers!
