<strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Welland</strong> <strong>River</strong> Study Area<br />

<strong>Characterization</strong> <strong>Report</strong><br />

its degraded water quality impairing complete use of its resources. The <strong>Welland</strong> <strong>River</strong><br />

watershed accounts for approximately 80% of the Canadian <strong>Niagara</strong> <strong>River</strong> Area of Concern.<br />

The <strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Welland</strong> <strong>River</strong> stretches from the lower siphon of the <strong>Welland</strong> Canal to the <strong>Niagara</strong><br />

<strong>River</strong>. The <strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Welland</strong> <strong>River</strong> study area includes the <strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Welland</strong> <strong>River</strong> and Thompsons<br />

Creek (Figure 1). The study area falls primarily within the municipal boundary of the City of<br />

<strong>Niagara</strong> Falls, with small portions extending into the City of Thorold and the City of <strong>Welland</strong>.<br />

Together Thompsons Creek and the <strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Welland</strong> <strong>River</strong> drain 35 square kilometers of land<br />

with nearly 69 km of watercourse.<br />

The study area includes 5.6 square kilometers of wetland, 7.6 square kilometers of upland<br />

habitat and approximately 19 kilometers of watercourse has riparian habitat. The study area is<br />

home to 13 listed Species at Risk; listed both nationally and provincially. Five of these species<br />

are endangered, another 5 are threatened species, and the remaining 3 are listed as species of<br />

special concern.<br />

Additionally, old growth trees have been identified in along the South Queen Victoria Park bluff,<br />

and the <strong>Niagara</strong> <strong>River</strong> is an internationally designated Important Bird Area.<br />
