Verbal shootout at
Winters’ library
By GENNIE SEELY
You think you’ve had bad days? I’ll tell
you what a real bad day is.
The D-Q University Board of Trustees
meeting was scheduled for Oct. 17 at the
Winters Library. The reason? We have no
power or water at D-Q. We are in the process
of figuring out a solution. Until that
happens, we must meet at some other
location.
I had learned Friday night that our
board chairperson would not be able to
attend because of a broken down car.
Another board member had to attend a funeral. That still left us
with a quorum: Our secretary, who would have to chair the meeting,
myself and our “Judas” board member. Our chair would be
able to vote in case of a tie. That possibility seemed entirely likely
since our Judas has gone to the “dark side” in the past several
months.
To set the stage for this scenario you need to know that we,
the D-Q board, have been assailed from all sides for months. We
have had to take on the powers that be of Yolo County, those
who are trying to take the land, and some who supposedly are on
our side. Well, with friends like some of these latter individuals,
we don’t need enemies. Another group called Mecha wants to
take over D-Q. They are Chicano, but claim they are “indigenous”
people.
Right now, Noel Boaz, an ersatz “savior” of D-Q University, is
trying to get the attorney general to kick us off the board. If he succeeds,
he will select a new quasi-board and begin setting in place
his “medical facility” at D-Q. He says he represents the Shasta
people. He is non-Indian. Interestingly enough, Shasta people
whom we have contacted deny he is affiliated with them.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why Indian people won’t
stand up and take people like this to task. In 2006, Boaz tried to
run his scam with the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors. They
shut him down, yet he continues to operate. Now he wants D-Q
land.
The Shasta people need to come forward and clear the record.
The attorney general’s office needs to do some investigating and
then fulfill its job in protecting the legal rights of the all California
people. But the job of documenting, investigating and checking up
on these people has fallen to the D-Q board, essentially just three
women of the D-Q board. We have had to depend on just our
guts, brains and experience. Albeit, we are made of pretty stern
stuff, but why aren’t these salaried people doing their jobs?
It’s about 160 miles down to Winters. I left a little before seven
in the morning so I could save on gas by keeping my speed under
65. I was almost to Anderson, listening to my traveling music,
when I noticed a Highway Patrol car coming the other way. He
was cutting across the divider strip. This all registered in my brain,
but not much.
Then my cell phone rang. My brain was still in duh mode.
I picked it up and instantly the red light came on behind me. I
dropped my phone and pulled over. It was the secretary of the
board telling me that she was ill and would not be able to come
to the meeting. She called right back because I had dropped my
phone. The officer said, “You might as well answer that now.”
I informed the secretary that I was receiving a ticket for talking
on the cell while driving. But if I thought that was the end of my
troubles, I only had to assess the situation: We would not have a
quorum for the meeting so I was making a long trip for nothing.
Besides, the other board member was Judas.
I arrived at the Winters’ library where a librarian volunteer and
her helpers were organizing books to be moved to their new facilities.
A few people trickled into the meeting. I informed them that we
wouldn’t have a quorum, but that I wanted to discuss some of the
topics. We just couldn’t do any voting.
Then our secretary called and said that she wanted to give
me a 10 minute warning: Our Judas and his entourage were on
their way to the meeting. I began to consider “security.” Maybe the
library volunteers could help throw books at any hoodlums.
Judas and his cohorts have apparently decided to bring D-Q to
its knees, while making money doing it. Yes, it is conflict of interest,
but Judas does not see it that way. He has joined forces with
just about any group that is working against us - Mecha and the
Boaz group to be exact.
Shortly thereafter the Mecha et al group entered some six or
seven of them. One tried to stare me down. I’ve never seen her
before, but I am familiar with the attitude. I can stare anybody
down.
The Judas group handed out their 40 item manifesto. I ignored
it. I am good at that also.
I have been toughened by teaching junior high for some 35
years. In order to survive, one has to learn a few tricks of the trade
(most definitely not politically correct): Diplomacy seldom works
and profiling saves a lot of time and trouble. The first allows the
subject to blame somebody or something else. The other often
heads off trouble before it starts. Above all, show no fear or indecision.
They will eat you alive if you do.
As the meeting progressed, it became reminiscent of a junior
high playground fight: a whole lot of yelling, blaming, lying, and
irrelevant posturing. (Show no fear. Put on the drill sergeant persona,
“Now listen up, worms).
They tried to hit me with the “history of D-Q” saying that it was
supposed to be for indigenous people. They wanted to get back to
that status of having Chicano constitute half the board. I had to do
an impromptu history lesson on what the word indigenous meant,
the conquistadors, the claiming of California from the real indigenous
people, the California Indians, and how D-Q was occupied.
(I know the history of California Indian people and what happened
to them. Don’t challenge me on this one).
I sensed that there was some thought that because I was a
woman, I could be intimidated. I informed them of the status of
strong Indian women in our culture. (That covered the subject of
gender equality, past, present and future).
They tried to hit me with alleged wrong-doing of the present
board. At this point I was aided by a man who has submitted his
credentials to be admitted to the board. He showed his logic under
fire. He told them they had to document charges, not just make
accusations. I figured that I might just survive the onslaught yet.
I had one person to back me up. Sometimes that is all one can
hope for in Indian business.
Then Judas tried to pull the “parliamentary procedure” infractions
trick. Now that really got “my Injun up.” I informed him that
parliament was European; that we were dealing with Indian stuff,
the Indian way.
Then he tried the judicial justice slant. I informed him I was not
too impressed with the present justice system. We were dealing
with Indian justice: truth, accountability and correcting any wrongs
we do.
One even pulled the Christian card on me: We must “forgive”
everyone. I informed him I did not have to forgive anybody. That
people who did wrong had to admit it, and fix any problem or
damage they caused. That is the Indian way. It is not my duty to
forgive someone so he can continue doing wrong.
Then I played my ace in the hole: the elder card. I told them
what elders were supposed to be doing. Maybe if elders were
doing their job, they (the accusers) would know how to act; that
they would not be doing things to bring shame on themselves,
their families and their people. (That pretty much took care of anything
in the past).
I was on a roll. I figured I needed to make my final stand. No
more beating around the bush with fake entente. The edict was
laid out: either they were with us, or they were against us. We
would not give up D-Q to anybody. If they wanted to help us, they
could, but we had no time for people who were not committed to
saving D-Q.
Four of the young men came and shook my hand afterward.
I would like to take that as a token of assent. I may have been
bloodied, but I was not beaten.
Okay, Indian people, it is now your turn to show some guts. On
Nov. 7 we will be holding the Veteran’s Celebration at D-Q. We will
be having a board meeting that morning, beginning at 9 a.m. You
need to be there to see what we are trying to do on our own. We
could use a little help. Then we can all celebrate.
Within the next month and a half we will hold the Elders Gathering.
It may not be all sweet and gentle. We are going to take
ourselves to task on what we need to do to help save our people,
especially our young. It’s a big job, but it needs to start with us.
We’ll be calling on all Indian elders.
