20<strong>06</strong> National <strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Recovery</strong> & K–6<br />

Classroom Literacy Conference<br />

More than 3,500 educators from 46 states and<br />

9 countries attended the 20<strong>06</strong> National <strong>Reading</strong><br />

<strong>Recovery</strong> & K–6 Classroom Literacy Conference held<br />

Feb. 4–7, 20<strong>06</strong>, in Columbus, OH. Keynote speakers<br />

were literacy experts Peter Johnston and Julia Douëtil,<br />

and children’s author Coleen Salley.<br />

The Conference program included 76 <strong>Reading</strong><br />

<strong>Recovery</strong> sessions, 13 implementation sessions, and<br />

78 K–6 classroom literacy sessions. The School<br />

Administrators Institute, held as a part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Conference, addressed a variety <strong>of</strong> issues with a focus<br />

on <strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Recovery</strong> implementation.<br />

In 20<strong>06</strong>, children’s literature sessions were added to the<br />

Conference program. Authors and children’s literature<br />

experts shared children’s books and addressed the roles<br />

they play in children’s lives and in their learning.<br />

Featured authors included Suzanne Bloom, Will<br />

Hillenbrand, Sara Holbrook, J. Patrick Lewis, Barbara<br />

McGrath, Shelley<br />

Pearsall, and<br />

Michael Rosen.<br />

<strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Recovery</strong> teacher leaders train and coach the nearly 13,000<br />

<strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Recovery</strong> teachers in the U.S. At the 20<strong>06</strong> Teacher Leader<br />

Institute, more than 500 teacher leaders worked diligently in small<br />

groups led by 42 <strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Recovery</strong> trainers. The Institute provided an<br />

in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the new material, the opportunity to problem solve<br />

collaboratively, and guidance on how to implement the theory and<br />

practices into their <strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Recovery</strong> sites.<br />

20<strong>06</strong> Teacher Leader Institute<br />

The 20<strong>06</strong> Teacher Leader Institute was held June 14–17,<br />

20<strong>06</strong>, in Denver, CO. The Institute was devoted to<br />

delving into what has proven to be a “gold standard”<br />

for early intervention—the individualized literacy<br />

lesson. Using Marie Clay’s work, Literacy Lessons<br />

Designed for Individuals Part One and Part Two,<br />

theoretical concepts and rationales relating to<br />

individualized literacy lessons were explored.<br />

The keynote speakers were Mary Anne Doyle and<br />

Carol Lyons.<br />

New Orleans author and storyteller, Coleen<br />

Salley, was a keynote speaker during the 20<strong>06</strong><br />

National Conference.<br />
