THE YEAR IN REVIEW COMMUNICATIONS ACHIEVEMENTS Spreading the good news about Reading Recovery RRCNA Web Site The RRCNA Web site is the information hub for the Reading Recovery community. In 2006, several new sections attracted visitors: • More than a dozen profiles of outstanding principals were featured in the implementation section. • A news section summarized 58 articles with information about Reading Recovery from daily and weekly newspapers. • Videos featuring Reading Recovery lessons, professional development, and cost-effectiveness were viewed more than 800 times. • A news section on the Reading First investigation generated more than 12,800 downloads of the Reading Recovery request and links to news articles about the investigation. Center for Early Literacy Information The Center for Early Literacy Information (CELI), originally funded by a grant from Verizon Reads, is a digital library of early literacy resources. In the past year, the CELI digital library grew to include more than 600 articles, books, and other resources. More than 2,500 unique visitors are using the site each month. CELI’s growth has been extraordinary—from 415 visitor sessions per month in July 2004 to almost 8,500 visitor sessions a month by the end of the 2006 school year. Since CELI’s inception in July 2004, nearly 14,000 copies of articles from Literacy Teaching and Learning have been downloaded from CELI. Professional Journals RRCNA publishes two professional journals, each with two issues per year. The Journal of Reading Recovery is written for Reading Recovery practitioners and includes topics on teaching, implementation, and research, as well as RRCNA news. The second journal, Literacy Teaching and Learning, focuses on wider literacy issues and is an interdisciplinary forum on issues such as language acquisition, literacy development, and instructional theory and practice. 6 READING RECOVERY COUNCIL OF NORTH AMERICA 2005–2006 ANNUAL REPORT
THE YEAR IN REVIEW ADVOCACY ACHIEVEMENTS Building support among decision makers In these times of educational change and uncertain funding, advocacy with federal, state, and local officials is more important than ever. Recognizing the critical and ongoing need for outreach to decision makers, both the RRCNA Board and its donors invested additional resources in recent years. We monitor emerging federal education policy and keep members up to date about its impact on Reading Recovery. We also inform members of Congress, the administration, and leaders in other literacy organizations about Reading Recovery. RRCNA continues to find new ways to “get the word out” about Reading Recovery in Washington, DC. A few firsts during the 2005–2006 year included • issuing a statement on the President’s FY 2007 budget request for education; • participating in a broad array of national coalitions and sign-on letters to support federal funding for education and preserve a voice for educators in policymaking; • submitting public witness testimony to the House Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee of Appropriations, the House Education and TOSA Foundation Supports Reading Recovery Advocacy Through the assistance of the TOSA Foundation, RRCNA has broadened its outreach to the largest and most-influential educational associations in the U.S. TOSA’s funding allows RRCNA to target key members of Congress for in-district advocacy. This has resulted in visits to schools with Reading Recovery by members or by their staffs on education or appropriations-related committees. Funding from TOSA also helped establish an office-in-residence in Washington, DC, allowing Reading Recovery to have a full-time presence on Capitol Hill. Workforce Committee, and the Commission on No Child Left Behind; and • filing a request for investigation with the USDE Office of Inspector General about its implementation of Reading First.
