THE YEAR IN REVIEW
PHILANTHROPIC ACHIEVEMENTS
How donations helped meet the challenge
Across North America, Reading Recovery is facing a
challenge unlike any it has seen in more than 20 years.
Large numbers of Reading Recovery personnel reaching
retirement and tight school finances combine to make
philanthropic support of training and professional
development more critical than ever.
Scholarships
Through RRCNA, generous donors can offer the
Reading Recovery teachers and teacher leaders of
tomorrow the gift of professional development. There
are two types of scholarships: Teacher leader training
scholarships and National Reading Recovery & K–6
Classroom Literacy Conference scholarships
Teacher Leader Training Scholarships
Teacher leader training scholarships provide year-long
training to teacher leaders at one of more than 20
university training centers in North America. In turn,
the scholars train teachers in Reading Recovery. Those
teachers then help thousands of the lowest-performing
first graders learn to read and write, thus the impact
of the grants continues long after the scholarships
are awarded.
Since funding for the teacher leader scholarships began,
77 teacher leaders have been trained through scholarships
awarded to their school districts. In 2005–2006,
the Deluxe Corporation Foundation joined the TOSA
Foundation in funding these scholarships, building upon
the tradition of support provided by Ronald McDonald
House Charities and The Goizueta Foundation.
Deluxe Corporation Foundation Scholarships
Since 1954, the Deluxe Corporation Foundation has
contributed nearly $80 million to human service,
education, and cultural organizations that serve the
communities where Deluxe Corporation facilities are
located. Its “Reading is For Life” initiative supports
literacy programs in elementary schools with demonstrated
high concentrations of first graders at risk of not
learning to read and write at grade level.
history Deluxe Corporation Foundation had in funding
Reading Recovery in four local schools, their Contributions
Committee decided to expand its support to a
national level by funding six $15,000 scholarships for
training Reading Recovery teacher leaders.
TOSA Foundation Scholarships
and Reading Recovery. Through the TOSA Foundation,
