PING’s wonderful boost for ‘Girls N Golf’ concept An excellent initiative designed to popularise and grow girls golf across Ireland is set to go from strength to strength with the support of iconic golf equipment brand PING. Karsten Solheim, founder of The Solheim Cup Following the unequivocal success of the 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle and the 2011 PING Junior Solheim Cup at Knightsbrook last September, PING have committed to supporting the growth of women’s golf in Ireland through the ‘Girls N Golf’ initiative. The manufacturer has been supporting Junior Golf in Ireland for a number of years, and this has been extended to include ‘Girls N Golf’ for the first time. This initiative will introduce Irish girls to the game through an introductory programme leading into the summer months. This is designed to increase the number of Irish girls playing golf, safeguarding the future of the women’s game and providing the 2011 Solheim Cup with the legacy it deserves. PING’s support of the programme clearly displays the manufacturer’s prolonged commitment to stimulating Junior Golf growth across Ireland, particularly among the female population. ‘Girls N Golf’ is an important initiative, and with PING now at the fore, it’s sure to go from strength to strength. The project is run in conjunction with the Irish Ladies’ Golf Union and supported by the Irish Sports Council’s ‘Women in Sport’ programme. ‘Girls N Golf’ is based around fun and activity. Participants will play games on a shortened course and gain an introduction to competition with several gala days over the summer months. Last year, 3500 girls took part in the taster element of the programme, with 400 continuing on to the 10-week project at their local club. This is an impressive take-up rate that clearly displays the potential for growth in Ireland. With PING’s support now in place, this number is expected to rise yet again.
