At Godewaersvelde, Pete Wise produced <strong>the</strong> first numbers of<br />

his Weekly Eye-Opener,&quot; a sixteen-page news-sheet written<br />

entirely by hand and dedic<strong>at</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> proposition th<strong>at</strong> all men<br />

were born<br />

- equal excepting non<strong>com</strong>s. and officers, who were<br />

works of <strong>the</strong> devil. A footnote to <strong>the</strong> first number informed us<br />

th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> paper was be &quot;to<br />

published every S<strong>at</strong>urday, <strong>at</strong> twelve<br />

o clock.&quot; Pete asked for suggestions of suitable names for his<br />

public<strong>at</strong>ion and <strong>the</strong> &quot;L<strong>at</strong>rine Gazette&quot; and &quot;La<br />

Clytte Bladder&quot;<br />

were suggested. Pete <strong>com</strong>promised by calling <strong>the</strong> paper Echo<br />

&quot;L<br />

de Godewaersvelde.&quot; To every issue <strong>the</strong> men looked forward<br />

with delightful anticip<strong>at</strong>ion; <strong>the</strong> officers and non<strong>com</strong>s. with mis<br />

trust and dread, for <strong>the</strong> editor s pen was often dipped in acid.<br />
