English Learner (EL) courses<br />
are for students whose first<br />
language is not American<br />
English.<br />
Course offerings include:<br />
EL Level One – Beginning<br />
EL Level Two – Intermediate<br />
EL Level Three – Advanced<br />

EL LEVEL ONE<br />
Full Year/1 credit Grades 9-12<br />
Prerequisite: Evaluation placement, EL<br />
teacher recommendation.<br />
Full-year course replaces Language Arts.<br />
Standards met: WIDA and Language<br />
Arts Standards.<br />
In this course you will acquire and<br />
expand listening, speaking, reading<br />
and writing skills in American English.<br />
Our purpose is to improve upon skills<br />
for social and academic success based<br />
upon the principles of Second Language<br />
Acquisition. The course is taught by a<br />
state-licensed EL teacher.<br />
A Level One Student:<br />
• is beginning to develop receptive and<br />
productive uses of English in the school<br />
context.<br />
• demonstrates comprehension<br />
nonverbally or through the native<br />
language, rather than in English.<br />

EL LEVEL TWO<br />
Full Year/1 credit Grades 9-12<br />
Prerequisite: Evaluation placement, EL<br />
teacher recommendation.<br />
Full-year course replaces Language Arts.<br />

Arts Standards.<br />
In this course you will acquire and<br />
expand listening, speaking, reading<br />
and writing skills in American English.<br />
Our purpose is to improve upon skills<br />
for social and academic success based<br />
upon the principles of Second Language<br />
Acquisition. This course prepares<br />
students for the ACCESS (Assessing<br />
Comprehension and Communication<br />
in English State to State) test and the<br />
Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment<br />
(MCA). The course is taught by a statelicensed<br />
EL teacher.<br />
A Level Two Student:<br />
• is developing the ability to<br />
communicate in English within the<br />
school context.<br />
• has errors that impede basic<br />
communication and comprehension.<br />
• has emerging lexical, syntactic,<br />
phonological, and discourse features<br />
of English.<br />

EL LEVEL THREE<br />
Full Year/1 credit Grades 9-12<br />
Prerequisite: Evaluation placement, EL<br />
teacher recommendation.<br />
Full-year course replaces Language Arts.<br />
Standards met: WIDA and Language<br />
Arts Standards.<br />
In this course you will continue to<br />
improve speaking and listening skills,<br />
with greater emphasis placed on obtaining<br />
proficiency in reading and writing. Upon<br />
successful completion of EL Level 3<br />
and teacher recommendation, students<br />
are prepared to enter the mainstream<br />
Language Arts program. Successful<br />
completion means a Measures of<br />
Academic Progress (MAP) overall score<br />
of 221, an ACCESS score of 4, and EL<br />
teacher recommendation.<br />
A Level Three Student:<br />
• is developing the ability to<br />
communicate effectively in English<br />
across a range of grade-level<br />
appropriate language demands in the<br />
school context.<br />
• has errors that interfere with<br />
communication and comprehension.<br />
• needs repetition and negotiation.<br />
• exhibits a limited range of lexical,<br />
syntactic, phonological, and discourse<br />
features when addressing new and<br />
familiar topics.<br />
