MATH 11 OVERVIEW<br />

Full Year/1 credit Grade 11<br />

Campus: South<br />

Prerequisite: IEP/Case Mngr. Approval<br />

Math 11 is a combination of Algebra and<br />

Geometry math skills that are designed<br />

to prepare students for the Minnesota<br />

Comprehensive Assessment. Students<br />

will use their 11th grade MAP Scores (RIT)<br />

to practice online at their own individual<br />

level. Material taught in this class is at<br />

an introductory level. Topics covered<br />

include: Solving Equations, Inequalities,<br />

MCA Practice Testing, Pythagorean<br />

Theorem, Simple and Compound Interest,<br />

Graphing, Geometry, Complementary and<br />

Supplementary Angles, Perimeter, <strong>Area</strong><br />

and Volume, Circumference, Statistics,<br />

Slope, Distance and Midpoint Formula.<br />

These skills will be applied through group<br />

work, projects, independent assignments,<br />

trial and error, problem solving and<br />

experiment. Students will have a chance<br />

to participate in many hands on activities<br />

throughout the year-long course.<br />

MATH 12 OVERVIEW<br />

Full Year/1 credit Grade 12<br />

Campus: South<br />

Prerequisite: IEP/Case Mngr. Approval<br />

Math 12 is a combination of functional<br />

math skills, pre-algebra skills and algebra<br />

skills. This class is an extension of the<br />

math class taken in 11th grade. Topics<br />

covered include: Traveling, Budgeting,<br />

Home Improvements, Managing a<br />

Household, Bank Accounts, Data &<br />

Statistics and Probability, Solving<br />

Equations, Quadratic Equation,<br />

Simultaneous Equations, Problem Solving<br />

and Mathematical Modeling. These<br />

skills will be applied through group work,<br />

projects, independent assignments,<br />

trial and error, problem solving and<br />

experiment. Students will have a chance<br />

to participate in many hands on activities<br />

through out the year long course. Students<br />

will not only learn new skills, but will be<br />

able to apply them to their independent<br />

living skills.<br />

BASIC SOCIAL STUDIES<br />

This social studies class is a functional<br />

skills class that looks into the areas of<br />

current events, daily geography, map<br />

skills, voting, election process, global<br />

warming, continents, natural disasters,<br />

habitats, and topics in everyday life.<br />

Students will have a chance to participate<br />

in many hands-on activities throughout<br />

the year-long course and apply new skills<br />

in independent living situations.<br />

In this elective course, students will work<br />

toward meeting individual IEP goals and<br />

objectives with direct instruction.<br />

Development in specific areas of<br />

academics, organization, study skills,<br />

social skills, and behavior will be<br />

addressed based on individual student<br />

needs.<br />

SOCIAL SKILLS<br />

Semester/.5 credit Grades 9-10<br />

Campus: North<br />

Prerequisite: IEP/Case Mngr. Approval<br />

This social language class teaches social<br />

skills found in everyday life. This class will<br />

help teens respond to and interact with<br />

people in a socially appropriate manner.<br />

Role playing and open discussions provide<br />

students with opportunities to learn<br />

more about self-advocacy, anxiety, peer<br />

relationships, perspective taking, selfesteem,<br />

manners and social rules.<br />

TRANSITION LIFE SKILLS<br />

Semester/.5 credit Grades 9-12<br />

Campus: North/South<br />

Prerequisite: IEP/Case Mngr. Approval<br />

This course will introduce or build upon<br />

prior student knowledge in the areas of<br />

transition. This course closely examines<br />

transition areas and teaches more basic<br />

concepts as they relate to home, school,<br />

and the community. Skill development in<br />

personal and community safety, shopping,<br />

menu planning, cooking, self-care, and<br />

self-advocacy are the focus.<br />

DEVELOPMENTAL/ADAPTED<br />

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (D/APE)<br />

Semester/.5 credit Grades 9-12<br />

Campus: North/South<br />

Prerequisite: IEP/Case Mngr. Approval<br />

Developmental Adapted Physical<br />

Education (D/APE) is offered to 9th–12th<br />

grade students with disabilities who<br />

are unable to participate in a regular<br />

physical education program. Through<br />

D/APE, students will seek to improve<br />

their overall levels of fitness and<br />

wellness by participating in a regular<br />

fitness program in which they learn<br />

how to operate and use a wide range of<br />

strength and cardiovascular equipment.<br />

Students participate in individual and<br />

group activities that promote an active<br />

participation lifestyle. Instruction<br />

also focuses on the social components<br />

associated with the various D/APE<br />

activities.<br />
