Actions taken at the 2007 Collaborative Summit on Breast Cancer Research are resulting in greater levels of collaboration and cooperation among non-profit groups and advocacy organizations working in the field; not only altering the ways in which non-profits interact with one another, but also sparking new and necessary conversations with government and industry. Collaborative Summit on Breast Cancer Research Surveying the array of funders, researchers, advocates, pharmaceutical industry representatives, regulators, and policymakers engaged in the fight against breast cancer, the Avon Foundation turned to the Foundation for NIH to convene a summit to foster collaboration among these entities. The Foundation for NIH brought together leaders from 27 funding organizations and advocacy groups and a host of other experts at a productive meeting in November with special keynote speaker Paula Zahn. Despite their varying approaches, philosophies, and programs, participants engaged in frank and open dialogue about how best to advance toward their ultimate common goal of eradicating breast cancer. There was consensus on the need to better utilize resources—by identifying funding gaps and opportunities, and eliminating barriers and redundancies. Outcomes included the formation of a “National Breast Cancer Planning Committee” to periodically review the breast cancer landscape and national agenda, a common database on grant awards, and a public report about how donations are used. “This Summit was a critical step toward identifying, analyzing, and eventually overcoming all the barriers that stand between where we are now and the eradication of breast cancer.
