Realizing <strong>the</strong> aims <strong>of</strong> foundation<br />
initiatives is <strong>of</strong>ten beyond <strong>the</strong><br />
capacity <strong>of</strong> any single sector <strong>of</strong><br />
America’s health-research enterprise.<br />
Often <strong>the</strong>y are large-scale and<br />
complex. They must leverage <strong>the</strong> resources and insights<br />
special to all stakeholders—government, industry, patient<br />
groups, academia, and o<strong>the</strong>r private groups. <strong>Foundation</strong> publicprivate<br />
partnerships epitomize <strong>the</strong> aim Congress had in mind<br />
when it established <strong>the</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> NIH to support <strong>the</strong><br />
mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Institutes</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />
