2007-08 head coach/year by year Men’s Basketball
head coach Mike Daley
GOLDEN FLYERS’ YEAR BY YEAR RECORD
Now in his 22nd season as head
coach, Mike Daley has provided
stability to Nazareth men’s basketball
for more than two decades.
With a solid nucleus of returning
players, Daley hopes to make the
Golden Flyers contenders in the
Empire 8 Conference in 2007-08.
With 285 career victories to his credit, Daley has guided the
Golden Flyers to several milestones during his tenure, including
10 post-season tournament berths and two JPMorgan Chase
Tournament titles.
Daley also has directed the Golden Flyers to three NCAA
Tournament appearances and the 1997 ECAC Upstate title.
The 2002-03 season was among the most noteworthy in
Daley’s career as Nazareth finished 22-6 for its best overall
record since 1986-87. Nazareth also captured the championship
of the JPMorgan Chase Tournament for the first time since
1987, scoring a mild-upset win over previously unbeaten and
nationally ranked Rochester in a memorable title game.
Daley came to Nazareth for the start of the 1986-87 season and
helped the team to a record of 22-6 and a berth in the NCAA
Tournament. They reached the NCAAs again in 1990 and 1998.
Daley twice has been honored as Empire 8 Conference Coach
of the Year and in 2002-03 was the national recipient of the
Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award by the College Basketball
Officials Association. The award is presented annually to the
team that best exemplifies sportsmanship, character and
ethics, traits that Nazareth teams have consistently exuded
under Daley’s direction.
Associate Head Coach Toby Brown
Men’s Basketball
2007-08 coaching staff
Assistant Coach Kevin Downey
Well recognized in the area college
basketball scene for nearly two decades,
Toby Brown is in his 11th season with
the Golden Flyers and his seventh as
the team’s associate head coach. He
came to Nazareth in 1997 after seven
auspicious seasons as an assistant under
Bob McVean at Rochester Institute of
Technology.
A native of Waterloo, Brown helped R.I.T.
to four 20-win seasons and three NCAA
tournament appearances. In 1996-97,
the Tigers finished 24-4 and reached the
Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
During Brown’s time at Nazareth, the Golden Flyers have made
four post-season appearances and won one conference title. He
helped the Golden Flyers to a 22-6 record in 2002-03, which
included the championship of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship
Tournament and an appearance in the championship game of the
ECAC Upstate Tournament.
Brown was a standout player at Waterloo High, then played for two
seasons at Alfred State before graduating with a degree in physical
education from Cortland. He currently teaches health and physical
education at the Norman Howard School in Rochester.
Kevin Downey, former basketball standout
at Canisius College, joined the men’s
basketball staff as a part-time assistant
coach in December of 2006.
Downey completed his college career
2005-06 as Canisius’ sixth all-time
scorer with 1,583 points. He started
every game of his four-year career (116
overall) and ranks second all-time in
three-point field goals made with 185.
He earned an undergraduate degree in
Biology and a Master’s degree in Business
Adminstration.
A native of Livonia, N.Y., Downey was a scholastic standout at
Livonia High, where he played for his father, the late Tom Downey.
As a senior at Livonia in 2000-01, Downey was the all-Greater
Rochester Co-Player of the Year in leading the Bulldogs to the
Section Five Class B title and a 23-1 overall record.
Downey’s mother, Linda Downey, was Nazareth’s women’s
volleyball coach for four seasons (1999-2002) and has been the
coach at the University of Rochester for the past five seasons. His
sister, Christa, was a three-time first-team All-American in volleyball
for Nazareth from 2000 through 2002.
Assistant Coach Dick O’Toole
After 33 years of teaching and coaching
in the Rochester City School District, Dick
O’Toole joined the Nazareth staff as a
part-time assistant coach in 2003.
O’Toole retired from high school coaching
at the end of the 2002-03 season after
compiling a career basketball record of
315-268 as varsity coach at Edison Tech.
Included in that run were three City-
Catholic League titles, two Section Five
titles, and a trip to the New York state
Class A Final Four in 1999. He was named
Section Five Class A Coach of the Year in
1997 and 1998.
In addition to coaching basketball, O’Toole was the varsity baseball
coach at Edison for 18 seasons. He also has coached football in
the City School District at various levels.
A graduate of SUNY Brockport, O’Toole resides in Rochester with
his wife, Maribeth. They are the parents of a son, Brendan, a 1997
Nazareth grad, and a daughter, Megan.
Sophomore | Corey McAdam was the Empire 8 Rookie of the
Experience and talent: Golden Flyers look to challenge in the tough Empire 8
“We need to do a better job holding leads at the end of
games,” said Nazareth Coach Mike Daley, back for his 22nd
season. “I think we’re more experienced now and we’re a
deeper team than before.”
Fortunes took a dramatic upturn when Ryan McAdam
returned to pre-season practice after missing all of 2006-07
with a broken wrist, an injury from which the Golden Flyers
never quite recovered.
A 6-foot-4 forward with two years of eligibility left, McAdam
two years ago averaged 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per
game while making 85 percent of his free throws.
In addition to McAdam, all five of last year’s starters are
back, including do-everything point guard Corey McAdam
(Ryan’s brother) and sharpshooting guard Joe Canori, who
has amassed more than 1,300 points
in three seasons.
Senior | Joe Canori has been the Empire 8’s leading scorer
in each of the past two seasons.
If they were a swim team and not a college basketball
team, the Nazareth College Golden Flyers would have had a
difficult time transitioning from the shallow end to the deep
end of the pool in 2006-07.
As games transitioned from one half to another, the Golden
Flyers had difficulty holding their breath and their season
became more renowned for coughing up second-half leads
than for winning basketball games.
The end result was that Nazareth struggled to keep its
collective head above the break-even mark as it finished
11-14 overall and 6-8 in the tough Empire 8 Conference.
As the calendar turns to 2007-08, the Golden Flyers hope
to able to swim with the E8’s bigger fish as they come
equipped with a roster that is talented, experienced and. . .
yes. . . deep.
Corey McAdam, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, was named E8
Rookie of the Year in 2006-07 after dominating several
games with a 14.6 scoring average, while ranking among
the Division III leaders in assists (7.4 per game) and steals
(3.2 per game).
Canori, a 6-foot-2 senior, led the Empire 8 in scoring for
the second year in a row with a 19.6 scoring average that
included 72 three-point baskets.
Senior Tyler Smith was probably the biggest beneficiary of
Corey McAdam’s precision passes as he doubled his scoring
average to 14.2 points per game, while leading the team
in rebounding (7.4 per game). A 6-foot-7 center, Smith also
displayed a soft touch around the basket in making 155 of
255 shots (60.8 percent).
Other experienced players include senior Leon Hill,
juniors Chris Barrett, Jeff DeHimer and Joe Mihalich and
sophomores Rayvon Higdon and Phil Johann.
Hill, a 6-foot-2 forward, played regularly in 2006-07 and
contributed 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while
making better than 50 percent of his shots (55 for 109).
DeHimer, a 6-foot-7 center, and Higdon, a 6-foot-1 guard,
each started regularly in 2006-07 and contributed 7.9 and
7.7 points per game respectively.
DeHimer also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game while Higdon
was second on the team in both assists (2.8 per game) and
steals (1.7 per game).
Barrett, a 6-foot-2 guard, contributed 2.1 points per game,
while Mihalich and Johann each played sparingly, but will
look to make more significant contributions.
Daley expects all five of his first-year players to help right
away. Included in that mix are Tim Brown, a 6-foot-6 forward;
Brian Gebhardt, a 5-foot-11 point guard; Chris Hoak, a
6-foot-2 guard; Dominique Kendrick, a 6-foot shooting guard;
and J.T. Miranda, a 6-foot-3 forward.
“We’re looking to compete,” said Daley, who will be assisted
by Toby Brown, Kevin Downey and Dick O’Toole. “The league
should be very competitive, but we hope to be in the mix.”
Nazareth College
H i s t o r y & i n f o r m a t i o n
Campus Expansion : Nazareth’s 2004 campus expansion included 2,200-seat Golden Flyer Stadium, an all-weather track and a softball diamond.
Nazareth College is a
private, co-educational
college with a liberal arts
and sciences tradition.
Founded in 1924 by the
Sisters of St. Joseph,
Nazareth has been
independent for more than
30 years.
Nazareth’s athletic mission
and philosophy
The Nazareth College Athletic
Department will strive to empower its
student-athletes to grow as people
and make a positive impact on
society, with life-skills development,
mentoring, and leadership
opportunities through competitive
and cooperative experiences.
The Athletic Department is committed
to assisting in the college’s mission
of educating students with a goal
of fostering lifelong commitment to
intellectual, ethical and aesthetic
values. The Athletic Department
will operate under firm institutional
control of the college and will always
place the health and welfare of
the student-athletes, coaches and
staff first in decisions regarding the
athletics program.
The department will operate under
the NCAA Division III philosophy,
through which academics are
the student’s first priority and
sportsmanship, fair play, diversity and
ethical conduct are constantly taught
and promoted.
Campus expansion
2004 marked the completion of
Nazareth’s largest capital campaign
in history. The college raised $25
million to support the recent campus
expansion through the purchase
of 73 acres of adjoining land and
buildings. Today’s campus features
148 acres and includes the five-story
Golisano Academic Center,
the 2,200-seat Golden Flyer Stadium,
the spacious Elizabeth George and
Portka residence halls and a softball
diamond.
Students now have twice as
