2007-08 head coach/year by year Men’s Basketball head coach Mike Daley GOLDEN FLYERS’ YEAR BY YEAR RECORD Now in his 22nd season as head coach, Mike Daley has provided stability to Nazareth men’s basketball for more than two decades. With a solid nucleus of returning players, Daley hopes to make the Golden Flyers contenders in the Empire 8 Conference in 2007-08. With 285 career victories to his credit, Daley has guided the Golden Flyers to several milestones during his tenure, including 10 post-season tournament berths and two JPMorgan Chase Tournament titles. Daley also has directed the Golden Flyers to three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1997 ECAC Upstate title. The 2002-03 season was among the most noteworthy in Daley’s career as Nazareth finished 22-6 for its best overall record since 1986-87. Nazareth also captured the championship of the JPMorgan Chase Tournament for the first time since 1987, scoring a mild-upset win over previously unbeaten and nationally ranked Rochester in a memorable title game. Daley came to Nazareth for the start of the 1986-87 season and helped the team to a record of 22-6 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. They reached the NCAAs again in 1990 and 1998. Daley twice has been honored as Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year and in 2002-03 was the national recipient of the Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award by the College Basketball Officials Association. The award is presented annually to the team that best exemplifies sportsmanship, character and ethics, traits that Nazareth teams have consistently exuded under Daley’s direction. He coached high school basketball in Ohio for 14 years and has also coached football, swimming, track, cross country and tennis at various levels. In 1979, Daley moved into the college coaching ranks as he became an assistant coach to Pete Lonergan at Division I Niagara University. He stayed with the Purple Eagles for six seasons. Well respected by his peers, Daley has been invited to speak at numerous camps and clinics. He also is director of the popular Nazareth College Basketball Camp during the summer. In addition to coaching basketball at Nazareth, Daley serves as assistant athletic director and is active in game management and scheduling. He resides in Henrietta with his wife, Debbie. Associate Head Coach Toby Brown Men’s Basketball 2007-08 coaching staff Assistant Coach Kevin Downey Well recognized in the area college basketball scene for nearly two decades, Toby Brown is in his 11th season with the Golden Flyers and his seventh as the team’s associate head coach. He came to Nazareth in 1997 after seven auspicious seasons as an assistant under Bob McVean at Rochester Institute of Technology. A native of Waterloo, Brown helped R.I.T. to four 20-win seasons and three NCAA tournament appearances. In 1996-97, the Tigers finished 24-4 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. During Brown’s time at Nazareth, the Golden Flyers have made four post-season appearances and won one conference title. He helped the Golden Flyers to a 22-6 record in 2002-03, which included the championship of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament and an appearance in the championship game of the ECAC Upstate Tournament. Brown was a standout player at Waterloo High, then played for two seasons at Alfred State before graduating with a degree in physical education from Cortland. He currently teaches health and physical education at the Norman Howard School in Rochester. Kevin Downey, former basketball standout at Canisius College, joined the men’s basketball staff as a part-time assistant coach in December of 2006. Downey completed his college career 2005-06 as Canisius’ sixth all-time scorer with 1,583 points. He started every game of his four-year career (116 overall) and ranks second all-time in three-point field goals made with 185. He earned an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Business Adminstration. A native of Livonia, N.Y., Downey was a scholastic standout at Livonia High, where he played for his father, the late Tom Downey. As a senior at Livonia in 2000-01, Downey was the all-Greater Rochester Co-Player of the Year in leading the Bulldogs to the Section Five Class B title and a 23-1 overall record. Downey’s mother, Linda Downey, was Nazareth’s women’s volleyball coach for four seasons (1999-2002) and has been the coach at the University of Rochester for the past five seasons. His sister, Christa, was a three-time first-team All-American in volleyball for Nazareth from 2000 through 2002. Assistant Coach Dick O’Toole After 33 years of teaching and coaching in the Rochester City School District, Dick O’Toole joined the Nazareth staff as a part-time assistant coach in 2003. O’Toole retired from high school coaching at the end of the 2002-03 season after compiling a career basketball record of 315-268 as varsity coach at Edison Tech. Included in that run were three City- Catholic League titles, two Section Five titles, and a trip to the New York state Class A Final Four in 1999. He was named Section Five Class A Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998. In addition to coaching basketball, O’Toole was the varsity baseball coach at Edison for 18 seasons. He also has coached football in the City School District at various levels. A graduate of SUNY Brockport, O’Toole resides in Rochester with his wife, Maribeth.
