“The secret of
Genius is to carry
the spirit of the child
into old age, which
means never losing
your enthusiasm”
-Aldous Huxley
WOW, we are already in the month
of September, I don’t know about you, but
as I grow older and smarter (I hope), the
days seem to fly by. I guess this is a good
thing, not sitting around wondering what
to do next. Fall is upon us and for those
who have no air in your PMC you can look
forward to driving again without melting.
As I have said before, now is the time to get
in your PMC and go for a drive. Pack a
picnic lunch and drive to your favorite spot
and enjoy the day.
We just returned home from the Pebble
Beach Concours d’Elegance. The weather
was wonderful - highs in the mid-60s and
no rain. The Concours was exceptional and
there were 5 Auction Companies selling
cars in Monterey during the week. We attended
the RM and Gooding Auctions. Of
all the cars that were sold, 2 of my favorites
were the following: RM sold a 1953 Bentley
Continental R-Type Fastback Sports
Saloon by H.J. Mulliner, the estimate was
$900,000 – 1,100,000 and sold for a record
$1,622,500 and Gooding sold a 1928
Bentley 4 ½ Litre Le Mans Sports “Bobtail”
for a mere $ 6,050,000. Looks like the
Bentley market is hot and the prices on
Rolls-Royces are steadily increasing.
By now you should have received your
ballot for our slate of Region Officers for
2013. Please vote and mail your ballot back
to our Secretary, Sharon Galvan for arrival
on or before October 17, 2012.
*Changes to the board
Our long term Treasurer, Vernon Frost,
has decided it is time to let someone else
hold the position of treasurer. I want to
THANK Vernon for his dedication and his
responsibility as our treasurer over the past
years. He has left us with a nice bank balance.
Not only did Vernon use a computer
program for banking, he also had a ledger
in which he would meticulously handwrite
all banking transactions. Now it is time for
him to just enjoy the events. Vernon you
will be missed as a board member. MANY
THANKS!!!
And on that note Ken Harris from Kerrville
has agreed to run as your new treasurer.
Ken is very active with the club and he is
also involved with the 2013 meet in San
Antonio. If you haven’t met Ken yet, please
take the time to get to know him. He is a
great guy.
As I have stated before, if you have any
interest in holding a position on the board
or know of someone you would like to see
on the board, let us know. Please vote and
return your ballot. Ballots will be counted
at our Austin Technical Seminar.
Laugh of the Day
Blinddate: “How was your blind date?”
a college student asked her roommate.
“Terrible!” the roommate answered. “He
showed up in his 1932 Rolls-Royce.”
“WOW! That’s a very expensive car.
What’s so bad about that?” “He was the
original owner.”
Please join club members in Austin for the
18th annual Fall Tech Seminar.
NEW Fall Tech Seminar Dates:
Friday, October 19 to Sunday, October 21, 2012 – Register Today!
• Here’s something new this year: Two catered dinners
instead of one-- with both dinners included in your registration fee!
• After making the journey to Austin through Friday traffic, everyone
attending the Fall Tech Seminar weekend will enjoy not leaving the comfort
of the host hotel (Homewood Suites). Dinner that evening will be a catered
meal in the hotel lobby.
• New for this year, we will also enjoy a catered meal in the hotel lobby on
Saturday evening! No more fighting the Saturday evening Austin traffic
to get to a noisy, crowded restaurant, and then waiting to pay your checks
individually.
• Both the Friday and Saturday evening catered meals are included in your
per-person registration price. What a bargain!
Expert Mechanics for 2012
There will be two Rolls-Royce and Bentley mechanics on hand again this year.
• Pete Smirnis of European Auto Works in Houston will share his expertise with
us as he did at the 2010 Fall Tech Seminar. Pete has been working on
Rolls-Royces and Bentleys of the Houston-area and Texas for many years.
• Simon Curzon, owner and chief mechanic of Zenith Motor Co. in
Independence, Mo., will also be here. Simon is the son of National RROC
technical specialist Ralph Curzon.
Given this amount of expertise in one place, we should have all our Rolls-Royces
and Bentleys covered, from pre-war, early post-war, the Cloud/S series, Shadow/T,
Phantom/GT/Flying Spur to the Ghost/Mulsanne.
Club Technical Chairman Dale Clark will coordinate with those of you registered
to attend so that you will know what tools you should bring to the seminar. Dale
will also see about getting some of the major tools for us to use at the seminar.
The main focus of the Fall Tech Seminar will be for members to have their
PMCs diagnosed/inspected. Repairs will be made only if the fix is simple and
the tools/parts are available. This will be an unique opportunity for all of us to learn
from the mechanics, each other, and from the experience.
Question and Answer
Session:
Our two expert mechanics will
also conduct a question and answer
session if there is time after
all the motorcars are diagnosed/
inspected. Bring your Rolls-
Royce and Bentley questions.
The host garage for the Fall
Tech Seminar will be John
Eagle’s European Bentley
Austin/Rolls-Royce of Austin, the same as last year. We will have access to two
lifts. We will have lunch brought in to the garage on Saturday. That’s another meal
that is included in your per-person registration fee.
Ladies’ Event
Texas Region Chair Cathie Mouton has been busy working on ideas for what the
ladies will be doing.
This year, the ladies will depart the host hotel in a chauffeur-driven limousine for a
scenic drive to Plate by Dzintra Restaurant in Bee Cave, TX. Dzintra was a finalist
for “The Next Food Network Star” on Food Network. A few of the ladies will get
to be hands on in the preparation of the meal. Then they will eat what they learned
to make for lunch. That’s another meal included in your per-person registration fee.
After lunch, Texas Region members’ Georgine and Gordon Peacock are having the
ladies over for a relaxing, refreshing afternoon at their home before heading back to
the host hotel.
Host Hotel
Homewood Suites continues to be our host hotel. Each room is a suite and the rate
includes an expanded breakfast. Homewood Suites also cordons off part of the parking
lot for our cars only. They also put out hoses and towels for those wanting to
clean their car. The club will provide an off-duty Austin police officer to watch our
cars the two nights we are there.
Socializing
Even if you are not mechanically inclined, there are plenty of opportunities to
socialize with club members. Friday evening, we are having dinner together. Then
one can visit at the garage, hotel or during meals. This year, we will also have dinner
together at the host hotel on Saturday evening, and then we finish up with lunch on
Sunday together.
Plan NOW to attend the Fall Tech Seminar this year, whether it is your first
time or your 10th, or if it has been a while since you’ve been. We’ve come a long,
long, way from earlier times at the Stagecoach Inn in Salado, TX, when we had to
get down on the cement to get under the cars!
The Tech Seminar registration form and hotel reservation information are
contained in this issue of the Lone Star Lady.
National Tour in Oregon
Sneed and Anne Adams attended the RROC Oregon
Tour in August which was hosted by Tom Purcell.
They drove their 2006 Bentley CFS from Katy, TX, to
Oregon and back. The Bentley performed flawlessly
over the 5,600 mile round trip drive.
The group stayed in a hotel in Medford, Oregon, and
ventured out each day to the surrounding sites. Daily
tours included Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Caves National Monument where we and the Giant
Redwoods in northern California. A tour was conducted
at the Harry & David facility where preparations
are in full swing for the holiday season gift supply. A
wildlife rescue facility opened its doors to the Tour and
had on display a number of eagles, wolves and bears
that had been rescued from injury and abuse. We’ve all
heard of Dogs for the Blind but we visited the Dogs for
the Deaf facility, a very worthwhile venture.
It was a well- planned hub tour. The one drawback? It
was even hotter than Texas in Oregon.
will be watched over while we enjoy the
day exploring the sites and sounds of
downtown San Antonio with professional
tour guides to lead the way.
By Phillip Reese, Event Co-Chair
Here are just a few of the
highlights of the RROC Fiesta
Downtown
San Antonio
Our first destination will be the world
we will board river barges for a
private tour. After disembarking the
to tour The Alamo, the mission where in
March of 1836 the historic battle took
place in the War of Independence from
Mexico.
After our tour, we will walk across the
street to the Menger Hotel (completed
in 1858) where Teddy Roosevelt formed
his Rough Riders in the Menger bar. The
Menger is where we will eat a delicious
lunch while taking in the historic, Victorian
beauty of the hotel and bar.
motor coaches that will whisk us to
the Institute of Texan Cultures to
interactive exhibits and displays, the stories
of Texas.
Our day ends with a police escort back
to the host hotel. Remember, nothing
else is scheduled during the day,
so there is no excuse for you not to
participate.
Driving Tours
With the beautiful, comfortable, spring
weather in Texas in April, we are planning
two driving tours for your pleasure. The
first is Tuesday, April 9, to the Western
White House of Lyndon Baines Johnson
in the Texas Hill Country.
The other driving tour, Thursday, April 11,
will take us to Kerrville, Texas to see
the private Atwell car collection. This
collection features several Pre-War
Silver Shadow ‘T’ University
Another first ever event for a National
Annual Meet will be the Tech Session
University. For 2013, the focus will be
on Silver Shadow/T models. These tech
sessions will be in depth over several
days. There will still be plenty of other
tech sessions but if you want to/need to
know more about these models, this will
Fireball Run
ADVENTURALLY 2011
Or, how to cover 2,500 miles
through 15 cities in 8 days
By Phillip Reese
The Fireball Run is an interactive
road rally which aids in
the recovery of America’s missing
children. Last year (2011)
marked the run’s 5th year.
You have to be invited to participate
in the Fireball Run.
My friend and fellow Texas
Region RROC member, Jeffrey
Sweet, who lives near Orlando,
Florida, received his invitation
in November 2010.
Jeffrey told me about the Adventurally
and asked if I would like to be his team
member. A person is not allowed to run the
rally alone. You are required to have at least
two people per team. Jeffrey’s explanation
of the rally seemed to me that it would be
one of these once-in-a-lifetime experiences
that you do not want to pass up when it is
offered.
The rally is not cheap but all meals and
hotel stays are included in the per-person
fee. As with any event, the entry fee starts
out low and becomes more expensive as
time gets closer to the event. It’s wise to sign
up early.
After much thought, I said “yes”. Then
the paperwork begins. You are required
to sign a model release because the rally
officials are making a movie of the run and
the participants are the cast. Then, your
doctor has to sign off that you are mentally
and physically capable of driving for long
distances. This is followed by having to take
an in-person-only defensive driving course.
Jeffrey was required to have an auto racing
fire suit, something that I did not need
since I was not going to be driving in situations
that called for such measures.
We also had to decide on what car to use
for the rally. Jeffrey was considering using
his Ford Fusion Hybrid and naming the
team something along the lines of “The
Green Team.” The rally is headquartered
at NBC Universal Studios in Orlando,
Florida, so before deciding on which car to
use, Jeffrey was able to attend a couple of
pre-rally events.
The rally founder, JJ Sanchez and the rally
announcer Ron Seggi, are both National
RROC and Florida Region members.
Jeffrey talked to them about what car to
use for the rally. They wanted Jeffrey to use
his Bentley. Jeffrey did not want to use his
2002 Bentley Azure Drophead. A drophead
is not easy to take care of on a trip since
you are not to use an automatic car wash.
Besides, for the rally, the car would have
decals placed everywhere.
September–October 2012 • The Lone Star Lady 13
At one point, we considered renting a car to use.
Then, Jeffrey found a 1990 Bentley Turbo R
that he thought would be a good rally vehicle.
He went to North Carolina to check it out and
decided it was the right vehicle for the rally and
purchased it. The Turbo R is black with a black
interior.
So, with Jeffrey’s purchase of the Turbo R, we
had the name for our team, Team Bentley.
Jeffrey was asked to give his top three choices
for the team number, and 18 became our team
number. We also had to have trading cards
printed. Jeffrey and I each had separate
trading cards made featuring a photo
of ourselves with the Turbo R. The cards also
had our email address, information about us,
and a small poster of the missing child assigned
to our team.
Speaking of the missing child, our missing child
was found just a few weeks before the rally
started. YEA! So we were assigned another missing
child. The overall goal of the rally is to get
the word out about America’s missing children
in general and specifically, to get the word out
about each team’s missing child. Each team
would be issued 1,000 8 1/2x11 posters of their
missing child. It was our main mission to take
the posters into gas stations, grocery stores, and
anywhere and everywhere we stopped to help
spread the word about the missing child. In fact,
before the end of the rally, we were informed
that one child had been found as a result of a
member of the public seeing one of the teams’
posters and recognizing the child. It works!
For 2011, there were 35 teams. Chevrolet was
the major sponsor. We had two celebrities who
were a part of teams. The first was NASCAR
legend Geoff Bodine. The second was Space
Shuttle Astronaut Winston Scott.
There were two teams that had more than two
members.
Team Chevrolet had 3 members. However, the
third member of the team, a young man, became
ill in Knoxville, TN, and was hospitalized
for several days and could not finish the rally.
The other was Team Mayberry driving a 1967
Ford Galaxy 500 police cruiser that was actually
used in the Andy Griffith show. The five-member
team dressed every day of the eight-day
rally as Andy, Barney, Miss Crump, and other
characters from the show. Such fun!
Speaking of fun, Team Time Car was an exact
copy of the DeLorean from
the “Back to the
Future” movies and
the driver was always
in character as
Doc from the movies.
The car would
talk, saying phrases
from the movies, and
was well equipped with
many other special effects.
The public loved it!
Team Time Car was not
the only DeLorean. There
was also Team DeLorean.
And, there was Team
Bumblebee that looked like
the car from the Transformers
movies. Bumblebee talked
and had special effects in the
engine bay as well as outside of the car.
Before leaving home on Thursday, Sept. 22, for
Orlando, I received the basic outline of the cities
where we were going to stay overnight and the
guidelines for the rally.
We were to bring a cell phone capable of connecting
to the internet, or a laptop computer
that could connect wirelessly while in the car.
We were also told to bring a navigation system
and a road atlas because cell/internet service was
spotty at best in some of the rural areas.
A GPS tracking device was installed in each vehicle
so that the officials would know where we
were at all times. We were not allowed to remove
or unplug the tracking device. If the device came
loose while driving, the team was contacted to
make sure you were okay and to advise you to
reinstall the device. This device was also used by
the safety officials, all of which were either retired
or current-duty police officers, to monitor
our speed. The rally is not a race. The entire rally
was run at the posted speed limit with no exceptions
allowed. There were a few teams given
speed warnings. If you continued to speed, your
team would be disqualified and sent home.
Jeffrey arrived at my hotel near the Orlando
airport around 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, after
driving from his home located in a southwest
suburb. Jeffrey greeted me with my own key to
the Turbo R, and said for me to drive.
We left the airport area and headed east toward
Cape Canaveral, with the final destination for
this day being the Fireball Run opening celebration
at the Hilton
Hotel on the beach at Melbourne. Along the
way, we stopped for lunch at a British themed
pub where we had Shepherds Pie. Delicious
food and it felt great to be driving a British
vehicle there.
When we arrived at the Hilton, there were
already a few rally cars in the parking lot. One,
in particular, was the Canadian Beavers Team.
They had driven a fairly new, highly modified,
Mustang Shelby Cobra all the way from Calgary,
Alberta, Canada!
The day was hot and humid for the latter part of
September. Jeffrey had informed me on the way
over that this was “love bug” season in Florida.
By the time we arrived at the hotel, love bugs
had created quite a mess on the windshield, mirrors,
side windows — and especially the front of
the Turbo R. So, before checking into the hotel,
we got out the cleaning equipment Jeffrey had
packed and got busy cleaning the love bugs off
the car. What a mess!
By the time we were done with the love bugs,
several other teams had arrived, including the
two teams driving DeLoreans, as well as the
majority of the “Angel” cars. The Angel cars are
a series of about six Chevrolet Camaros that
were specially designed as memorials to “First
Responders” who lost their lives on (and since)
September 11, 2001. Angel 1 is covered with
over 1,000 names of those first responders.
Angel 1 went on the entire rally. The other
Angel cars were to meet the rally at the finish
line in Gulfport, MS. However, the transport
company hired to transport the cars to the finish
line, backed out. So, with the help of key rally
team members, they were able to get enough
volunteers, including Nascar driver Geoff
Bodine’s wife, to drive the cars from Jacksonville
to Gulfport in time for the finish.
The opening celebration was held outside the
Hilton next to the beach that evening. We met
14 The Lone Star Lady • September–October 2012
several other team members that evening and
everyone was friendly. One of the key components
of the Fireball Run is that it is a “no
attitude zone.” There are people from all walks
of life at the rally, and no one is allowed to treat
another person as anything less than equal for
any reason.
That evening, during the opening celebration,
I started getting chills. I had a kidney stone that
had caused the chills just two weeks before I
went on the rally, so I began wondering if it was
happening again. I went to bed early after taking
a fever reducer in hopes that I would feel better
in the morning and not end up having to fly
home and cancel the trip. The next morning,
Saturday, Sept. 24, I woke up feeling better with
the fever breaking during the night. I decided to
start the rally.
After breakfast near the beach, all teams headed
toward downtown Melbourne where we were to
check in. On the way to downtown, we stopped
for fuel and to rinse the car as it had sprinkled
during the night. Check-in had to be done by
both team members. After checking in, we were
given our series of decals that were required to
be put on the Turbo R in a predetermined pattern.
Jeffrey had done this before and brought
the proper supplies so we accomplished this task
much easier than most. It is quite a sight to see
any vehicle with so many decals but even more
so when it is a Bentley!
was accomplished with two IPads at a good time
while teams were standing in line.
After the second check-in, we were to get in our
vehicle and get in line to do the vehicle check-in
with video cameras rolling, complete with an announcer,
announcing the details of the vehicle,
team members, etc. Photos were taken against
a backdrop of the Turbo R and us. This is also
when and where the GPS tracking device was
installed. Because of the need for power ports,
Jeffrey had the tracking device plugged into the
left rear door cigarette lighter. It was taped to the
door. For the rest of the trip, opening that door
was off limits.
After completing the vehicle check-in process,
we were to add the car to the local car show
that was taking place on the other side of the
building. A nice selection of local cars added to
the enjoyment of the day. After lunch, all teams
were ushered into a room for an event briefing.
This was where we were informed about how
every day would start. Leave the hotel and drive
to the starting line. Park your vehicle and both
team members sign in. Listen to announcements.
Meet the mayor and other local/national
officials and have a photo made with the officials.
If not done already, line up your vehicle
in two lines in the order you were given the first
day. Pose for group shots. Wave to the cameras
and say the words you are told to say. Run to
your vehicle when informed.
day. In the mission envelope was an audio CD
and a written version of your mission. Most
of the time there were at least three different
versions of mission envelopes, all with different
destinations. As such, you were told not
to follow another team as they probably had a
different mission.
After the opening briefing, we were told to go
to our vehicles and wait for the first mission
envelope. For our first mission all teams were
going to the same destination, which was to
a police cone and wet skid challenge. For this
mission, the driver of the vehicle had to wear a
race fire suit. When we arrived at the challenge,
all contents of the vehicle, including the boot/
trunk had to be emptied onto the ground until
the challenge had been run. Only the driver,
in the race fire suit, was allowed in the vehicle.
Instead of doing the challenge as two separate
courses, the police set it up as one course, with
one section of the cones being wet and the other
section dry. Jeffrey, (a retired NY State Trooper)
had taught this sort of course and was prepared,
but had never done it in the Turbo R. Jeffrey was
third in line and did very well.
After we finished this mission, we had to
complete another mission. This mission was a
“charity mission.” We had several of these charity
missions throughout the rally. This charity
mission involved purchasing at least five books
on the subject of teenagers getting their lives
back on track, with subjects like: self-esteem,
Jeffery Sweet &
Phillip Reese–
“Team Bentley”
After completing the decal task, we went and
stood in line again so that we could get our
goodie bag, prepurchased merchandise, and to
pick up our posters. While in line, the team in
front of us was Team Survey. They had rented a
Prius to run the rally. They were also responsible
for getting a survey to each team member about
the experience at the beginning of the rally. This
When you were dismissed to go to your vehicle,
after however many retakes of the parting shot,
the driver was to have the driver’s side window
down to be ready to receive the first mission
envelope of the day. The driver was to hold the
mission envelope out of the window until the
starting pistol went off. Then, you could hand
the envelope to the passenger so he could start
figuring out the clues about where to go that
Team Bentley with
“Dollar General”
Officials
The next morning, Sunday, Sept. 25, was the
real start of the rally, when we actually left
Melbourne. We lined up in two rows just as
instructed in downtown Melbourne. Had a final
briefing, listened to the mayor of Melbourne,
had our photos taken with the mayor and took
off on this adventure. Jeffrey started out driving
with me using Jeffrey’s IPhone. I do not have
an IPhone and thus, do not know how to use
it to look up things on the internet. Jeffrey gave
me some basic instructions but, with bifocals
and a small on-screen keyboard in a moving car,
things did not go well. I got frustrated, Jeffrey
got frustrated. We stopped and switched mission
drivers.
That first morning, we were given no fewer than
four missions. All missions have a point value.
You do not have to complete ALL missions. In
fact, it is impossible to complete all missions.
Though, you do have to get to Passage Control
(lunch) and take the mandatory hour break
before you can get the next set of missions. You
always have an “out” if you cannot figure out
how to get to the destination. We were given
an 800 number to call. You lost half of your
mission points if the person gave you one clue.
If you call again, or, if you call and ask for the
answer, you lose ALL of your mission points
for that mission. There are also bonuses every
day that are worth different points. One of
the bonuses that was a constant for every day
was finding and taking a photo of a Chevrolet
dealership. This made sense since it was the
Chevrolet Fireball Run!
The information you are given to try and figure
out the mission is not clear, or at least it was not
clear to us.
Here is an example of what the mission
schedule was like for the first half of
one day...
Mission No. 2
You are en route to Jacksonville FL, but not
before accomplishing several missions, passage
control and well, several more missions. The
arrival window to the Jacksonville finish line is
between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. When you
arrive depends on how quickly you get a clue.
You should arrive to passage control between
12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., a two-hour allowance
has been added to accomplish missions, passage
control, and for brief fuel stops along the way.
There are several missions for you to accomplish.
Remember, arriving to driver check-in
prior to 5:30 p.m. will result in a point loss penalty.
Arriving outside the window will result in a
0 score for this leg of the event, and you’re going
to go hungry. The goal, as always, is to roll into
driver check- in within the allowable timeframe.
The Jacksonville dinner reception is at the finish
line between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and is
the only finish line reception which does not
include alcohol. The vehicle should remain on
property for the public until 8 p.m. At 8 p.m.
you are welcome to route to the Aloft hotel, at
4812 Deer Lake Road, West Jacksonville. The
hotel is about 8 miles from the finish line.
Therefore, for safety reasons, no alcohol is being
served at the dinner reception. However, when
you arrive at the Aloft hotel, our good friends at
Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka and Fireball Whiskey
have you taken care of with great elixirs as well
as the Aloft hotel is providing each of you with
two complimentary drink tickets good for beer
or wine.
Mission No. 3
This mission should get the motors running.
Formed in 1962, all operations of its kind have
started right here beginning in 1968. For us, this
is the center of space. Go tend to the garden,
where you will find a real rocket man. Capture
the moment of any one from your team with
him. Ensure the garden is visible in the background.
Don’t forget to get your patch from the
rocket man. You must arrive to the finish line
with the patch stitched to your shirt in order for
the points to count. Right about now lessons
from grandma would come in handy. Mission
control value, 20 points.
Mission No. 4
Founded in 1960, it is the nation’s first museum
dedicated to memorialize America’s finest who
gave all in the line of duty. Inside, near the 911
memorial, an honor guard stands posed. Go
there and get a photo of your entire team saluting
our fallen heroes. Ensure the honor guard is
in the photo. Please be mindful and respectful of
your surroundings. Then move on to your next
mission. Mission value, 20 points.
Team Bentley at the
American Police Hall of Fame
Mission No. 5
Advance to the resting place of the Mud Hen’s
most famous player, who coincidentally is the
inspiration for the Fireball Run. It’s Sunday, so
proceed respectfully through the park. Capture
a close-up of someone from your team leaving a
baseball autographed by your entire team. One
picture needs to capture clearly, and up close, a
member of your team, the autographed baseball,
and the legendary marker. Your baseballs will be
collected at passage control. Don’t strike out on
this. It’s worth 20 points.
Mission No. 6
It began as a dealership, and eventually evolved
into American Airlines. It’s cerebral founders
then spun off an institution of quite literally
higher learning. Take flight to this organization.
Once there, get a photo of someone from
your team tossing a paper airplane near the first
sustained and controlled heavier than air contraption
forever frozen atop a grassy knoll. Make
sure the paper airplane is in flight for the points
to count. Mission value, an uplifting 20 points.
Mission No. 7
Your first passage control and lunch destination
is Americana at its finest. What started out as
booze running evolved into a little beachside
adrenalin competition, which in 1987, eclipsed
baseball for the title of the great American past
time. What took Geoff years to accomplish,
you’ll do in just minutes. Go to the tour center
for lunch and a rare opportunity. Check in, sit
back, relax and enjoy your mandatory hour
break. When your time is up, roll to an unprecedented
photo-op on Victory Lane where you’ll
also receive the next mission envelope. Passage
control is valued at a speedy 40 points.
Beside the daily start/finish lines,
missions, passage control, bonuses
and traveling between destinations,
what did you get to do and
see along the way?
Well, we got the chance to meet people
that we probably never would have had
the opportunity to meet, such as:
• Space Shuttle Astronaut - Winston Scott and
NASCAR Driver - Geoff Bodine
• Mayors and other state/federal officials of the
majority of cities where we stayed overnight.
• The actress who was the voice and inspiration
for Disney’s 1959 movie, Sleeping Beauty,
Mary Costa.
• The CEO of Chick-fil-A - Dan Cathy.
• General Dwight D Eisenhower’s Secretary and
Gold Medal of Merit winner, Helen Kogel
Denton who, during World War II, typed the
plans for the invasion of Normandy (D-Day).
And, now, some of the things we
got to do:
• Police Department Cone and Wet Skid
Obstacle Course.
• Victory Lane at Daytona Motor Speedway
with team and car.
• Drive laps on the Atlanta Motor Speedway
with both team members in the car followed
by a Cone Obstacle
Course (NASCAR
Driver, Geoff
Bodine still
holds the track
record at this
speedway).
• Compete with
the team and car
at a Drag Strip.
• Complete a scavenger hunt on a golf cart.
• Feed raw chicken to an adult alligator.
• Compete in a disc golf course challenge with
world champions of the sport.
• Learn how to rope a steer and then rope a
sculpture of a steer.
• Wear Sitting Bull’s headdress.
Sitting Bull?
• Use Adolf Hitler’s signature stamp.
• Visit crowds of well-wishers in various
locations throughout the rally who treated us
like Rock Stars, wanting autographed Fireball
Run team trading cards. Some locations even
closed school for our arrival so that students
could cheer us on!
• Tour a yacht manufacturer.
• Have a police escort lead the way most
mornings.
• The finish in Gulfport MS consisted of a
police escorted parade that started by lining all
team vehicles up in the parking lot of the
yacht manufacturer.
We went down Highway 90 which at that point
is right along the beach. The annual “CruisIn
the Coast” car event was starting, so there were
many interesting vehicles all along the parade
route cheering us on. We made our way to
downtown Gulfport where there were more cars
and cheering crowds. We parked our cars and
distributed the last of our missing children posters
and handed out even more autographed rally
trading cards. As the sun started setting over
the Gulf of Mexico, we headed a short distance
down the beach to the Beau Rivage Casino
The awards ceremony took some time to get
started as there were points to be tallied.
We used the time to visit with friends we made
and to get contact information.
Team Bentley was put in the Exotic Class. The
other two cars in our class were the two teams
with DeLoreans. We were surprised to be in that
class because there was a newer Mercedes Benz
S class AMG and that team was in Luxury Class.
Team Bentley won 2nd place in Exotic Class.
Team Bentley also won Best Dressed Team/
Cleanest Car!
All of the awards are plastic road signs. Since
Team Bentley won two prizes, Jeffrey took the
Best Dressed/Cleanest Car award and I took the
other.
All in all, it was quite an interesting rally. It
had all the elements of life itself. It was at times
confusing, exciting, frustrating, demanding,
requiring patience, etc.
Would I do the rally again? I don’t think so.
However, I would be better prepared if there
were a “next time.”
Plans for the RROC 2013 National
Meet - ‘Fiesta’ - to be held in our own
San Antonio,Texas on Monday, April
8 through Saturday, April 13 are now
being finalized. It’s going to be a terrific
meet, with some exciting new
features for attendees.
RR/Bentley owners from across the nation
are eagerly anticipating a great
visit to our wonderful state and the
beautiful city of San Antonio, and the
program that Meet CO-Chairmen Al
Briseno and Phillip Reese have planned
will definitely deliver. This will be the
first ever national meet to be
held in Texas, so the Texas Region is
eager to ‘put our best foot forward’.
In order to make this event truly exceptional,
we need your help to roll
out the red carpet. Greeters at the host
hotel are a key ingredient to
ensuring that our guests feel welcome.
Greeters will be available at key
locations in the hotel [such as the registration
area, main lobby, etc] to
answer questions, direct Meet attendees
to registration and convey a
Texas-sized
‘welcome’.
There are a number of other key
areas that volunteers are needed
as well to ensure that all happens
smoothly, such as the Help Desk, Meet
Registration, The Fiesta Parade to
HemisFair Park, Judging Day on Saturday
morning and the various driving
tours and social events.
We hope we can ‘count you in’ as a
volunteer. If you can spare a couple
of hours or more at any time during
the meet, please contact Marcy at
mlcl@charter.net to indicate where you
prefer to serve [i.e. greeter, registration,
breakfast runs, etc] and the time
periods that you have available.
You will receive periodic updates by
e-mail as the date of the Meet draws
closer. In the meantime, please feel
free to contact me at your convenience
with any questions you may have
about volunteer roles.
Looking forward to seeing you in San
Antonio for the 2013 RROC Fiesta
National Meet!
saludos cordiales,
All Board members were were in attendance
except for John Lovick, Director,
and Dale Clark, Technical Chairman.
Vernon Frost was on speaker phone from
his home in Fredricksburg. In addition,
several region members were present.
Secretary’s Report:
Sharon Galvan reported that the minutes from
the last BOD meeting had been unanimously
approved and printed in the LSL for all
members to read.
Treasurer’s Report:
Vernon Frost gave an oral report over the phone,
and will be printed in the LSL. The Texas
Region has over $35,000 in the treasury to date,
and it was noted that Bentley Dallas contributed
$3,500 to the Spring Meet.
Membership/National Report:
Sneed Adams reported that the Texas Region has
326 members at present. He also gave a report
on National stating the computer system is being
worked on and
improved. National membership for 2011 was
approximately 8,000 members. The National
finances are stable and doing well, especially
attendance at the National Meets. There are 14
board members, of which 7 are up for re-election
in the summer.
A discussion was held regarding interaction with
area dealerships to promote our Region when
they make a sale of a Rolls Royce/Bentley.
A discussion was held regarding a message from
National that they were in the process of preserving
and scanning Silver Shadow records and
are asking each region to donate toward this effort.
Tim Myrick made a motion that the Texas
Region would match up to $1,000, any monies
donated for this by the members of our Region.
second was given by Al Briseno, and this motion
was passed unanimously.
or special interest stories, to be sent to him.
Activities Report:
Possible events discussed by Activities Director,
Jim Stryker, were “Cars and Coffee” in Dallas,
and possibly starting this in the Houston area.
Also, including an outing/excursions after
breakfast one a quarter. More ideas were given
in regards to getting our cars involved in other
events with other clubs.
• Next year the 2013 Spring Meet will coincide
with the National Meet to be held in San
Antonio. Suggestion was given that the 2014
Spring Meet be held in Conroe.
• It was decided the Tech Session should stay
in Austin, as it is centrally located for all
members.
• Holiday parties in 2012 will be hosted in
Dallas, Hill Country, and Houston areas. No
regional party will be held this year, as all effort
will be focused on the National Meet.
Old Business:
Tim Myrick discussed the awards, ribbons, and
plaques to be purchased for 2014. Plaques cost
$23 each, and a discussion was held regarding
the design of the plaques.
2013 National Meet in San Antonio:
Al Briseno reported that many tours (driving
and bused) have been planned. Hotel is set, and
there is a need for all Texas Region members to
volunteer in some capacity. The judging will
be held on Friday, and the awards banquet on
Saturday night. A planning session was held in
May in San Antonio to see the venue and the
judging field. Many ideas were discussed for
various events for the National Meet.
New Business:
Cathie Mouton discussed the results of the Texas
Region Member Survey. Approximately 70%
members are satisfied with the Region, with
many suggestions given which will help the
board plan future events.
Adjournment:
With no other business to discuss, a motion was
made by Tim Myrick, and a second by Sharon
Galvan to adjourn the meeting at 10:52 AM
CST. Motion passed unanimously.
