As we drive our Proper Motor
Cars (PMCs) into the Fall
and Winter of 2009, there
are plenty of events in which
Texas Region members can
participate.
1) The Southern Delta Region
has invited the Texas Region
to participate in their annual
Show-Off, Oct. 15-18, in New Iberia, La.
Tony Simmons of the McILHENNY Company
(Tabasco Hot Sauce) is the host and has planned a
fun weekend of events for us, including a private
tour of the Tabasco plant and Avery Island, which
is not open to the general public.
2) The annual Fall Tech Seminar in Austin,
from Friday, November 6 to Sunday,
November 8. This is a great opportunity for
you to have your PMC evaluated by three expert
Rolls-Royce and Bentley mechanics. You will get
to see under your PMC, make a list of what needs
attention on your PMC in order of importance,
and you will also be able to ask questions of the
mechanics on concerns you may have about
your PMC. There are opportunities to visit with
members throughout the weekend. And ladies,
Elaine Krazer has a special lunch and shopping
trip planned at the upscale Domain for you, too,
while the rest of us are at the garage!
3) The 2nd annual After Holiday Party comes
next. We will be in centrally located San Marcos
Tx from Friday, Jan. 22 to Sunday, Jan. 24,
2010. The party itself will take place on Saturday
evening, Jan. 23. You have seen the photos in the
Lone Star Lady of the first After Holiday Party, so
you know you do not want to miss this one! The
theme is Hawaiian Luau. So, get those Hawaiian
shirts and grass skirts ready to go. Be ready for
fun!
4) Spring Meet 2010 will be earlier than usual
and is planned for Thursday, March 25 to Sunday,
March 28 in College Station Tx. This is another
event you won’t want to miss! Members Xavier
and Alicia Bethune are opening their ranch to
the Texas Region for a day of Judging and fun on
the ranch. And this is no ordinary ranch. They
have their own private lake for boating, jet skiing,
swimming and fishing. There will be a variety of
activities to please all members at the ranch. And
the ranch is just one part of a wonderful Spring
Meet that Eddy and Cheri Bridges and Sneed
Adams are putting together for us to enjoy.
5) The National Spring Tour is being planned
by Texas Region/Southern Delta Region members
Kelly Kyle and Hal Caudell for April 11 to
April 16, 2010. The tour will start in Franklin,
Tennessee (just south of Nashville) and go along
the Natchez Trace ending in Natchez, Mississippi.
This makes it easy for Texas Region members
to drive their PMCs and participate in this fun
event.
Also, don’t forget to attend the monthly
breakfasts. The breakfasts in Dallas/Fort Worth
and Houston are on the 2nd Saturday of each
month and the breakfast in the Central Texas
Area (New Braunfels TX, between Austin and San
Antonio) on the 3rd Saturday of the month. If
you happen to be away from home and near one
of the other breakfast cities, please feel free to drop
in and join the group. You are always welcome!
And, there are always opporturnities to participate
in either a local Texas Region event or other local
events where we can share our PMCs with others.
Who knows who you might encourage to seek
out a PMC of their very own and get involved in
the future of our club?
Now on to other matters. Please find
enclosed the Texas Region Ballot for officers
who will take office as of Jan. 1, 2010. Please
vote and follow the instructions to return the
ballot by the deadline indicated.
You will also find enclosed the registration
form for the Fall Tech Seminar. Please complete
the form and send it in with a check as soon
as possible. Don’t forget to make your hotel
reservation.
A Texas-sized Thank You goes out to the following
Texas Region members associated with the
Texas Region’s full page ad in the forthcoming
2009 Member Directory. The purpose of the ad is
to help defray the cost of printing.
• John Sweney for initiating the idea of having an
ad and collecting the donations.
• Steve Krazer for making a spectacular design
for the ad.
• Doug Handel for allowing the Region to use
his photograph of his 1936 25/30 Thrupp &
Maberly Rolls-Royce as the backdrop for the ad.
• The TX Region members who donated to pay
for the ad. Their names appear on the ad.
• Special recognition and Thanks to Xavier Bet
hune who secured a full page ad for the direc
tory courtesy of Continental Airlines.
Please watch your mail and/or email for the After
Holiday Party registration form. As soon as you
get it, make your hotel reservation, and return the
completed form with your check so that you will
not miss another fun Texas Region event.
Get your PMC out and drive it!
Take care and enjoy,
Hill Country Area Texas Region Members Enjoy Tour
of Dick’s Classic Garage and Lunch at Riley’s Tavern
On Saturday, Aug. 15, Texas Region
members in the Central Texas/Hill Country
area toured the brand new Dick’s Classic
Garage (car museum) in San Marcos Tx.
Dick’s Classic Garage is the 2nd car museum
for Texas Region member Dick Burdick.
Dick’s first car museum is the Central Texas
Museum of Automotive History, located in
Rosanky Tx.
Dick’s Classic Garage focuses on cars made in
the United States between 1929
and 1959. The collection includes cars
4 The Lone Star Lady • September–October 2009
from Duesenburg, Marmon, Auburn,
Cadillac, Packard, Lincoln, Buick,
Oldsmobile, Ford and Tucker, to name but
a few.
When we toured the museum, 40 cars were
on display. The museum can display 60 cars
and also houses a restoration facility and a
meeting room for car clubs to use. During
our visit, the museum’s manager, Richard
Skidmore, who is Dick Burdick’s son-in-law,
welcomed us to the museum.
Before leaving the museum, Dick
Burdick drove up in his light blue Bentley
Continental GTC with two dogs in tow.
Dick came in and greeted us and joined in
the group photo before we said goodbye.
Next, we drove down the road to Texas
Region member Joel Hoffmann’s Riley’s
Tavern. Joel is the person who put this event
together for the group.
Riley’s Tavern has the distinction of being the
oldest bar in Texas. Part of the building that
houses the tavern dates from the mid 1800s.
As the story goes, in September 1933, J C
Riley, at the age of 17, drove to Austin from
south of San Marcos in a Model T with his
uncle. The purpose of the trip was to obtain
a beer license for his soon-to-be saloon. It
was now at the end of Prohibition. J C Riley
camped out on the steps of the Capitol and
waited for it to open. He was the first person
in line and got the first beer license in Texas!
Riley’s Tavern is very much a Texas Honkie
Tonk. It is like stepping back in time to at
least the 1950s. Joel and his staff prepared a
delicious barbecue lunch for us with all the
usual fixings.
After finishing our meal and visiting,
everyone departed for home.
Thank you Joel for putting this event together
for us. We appreciate it.

Why Attend the
Texas Region
Technical Seminar?
by Joe Long
Shortly after joining the
RROC, I was made aware
that the annual Texas Region
Tech Seminar was being held
in Austin. I was encouraged
to bring my newly purchased PMC to
the event. Frankly, I was pretty apprehensive
about attending. I didn’t know
anybody in the club. I was pleasantly surprised
to find that this group of people
is a group of car buffs... who happen to
have a fondness for Rolls- Royces and
Bentleys. I was welcomed by all whom I
came in contact with and found that they
were very happy to have a new member
join them in the seminar.
Ladies, as your Texas Region RROC
Secretary, I would like to encourage you
to attend the November Technical Session
in Austin this November and participate
in the Ladies Event. Our Activities
Director, Elaine Krazer, has planned a
wonderful day of lunch, shopping, and
more while the men and the mechanics
will be in the garage learning more about
their PMC’s. Past Ladies Events have
been more grand than I ever expected,
and this one is no exception.
By the time you will be reading this, the
weather will be pleasantly cooler, some
foliage in Texas will be changing colors,
and the holidays will be just around the
During last year’s three-day event I
learned more about my car than I may
have in years if I had not attended this
tech seminar. Our fellow members have
such an increadible knowledge base. It
would take you forever to figure out the
workings of these cars by yourself. Everyone
was helpful in things to look for and
helpful hints on how to maintain and
enjoy your car. I was impressed that the
region takes the initiative to have not one
but three fully-qualified technicians to
corner! And holidays mean family, faith,
fun, and food! As many of you do, I
have fond memories of sharing the holidays
with my family, and special recipes
passed to me from my mother. Now, as
she is no longer with us, her dishes have
more of a significance to carry on her
presence at the table while
Barbara Ann’s
Tea Cakes
1 cup butter, softened
3 cups sugar
3 large eggs,
room temperature
2 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup milk
5 1/2 cups flour
(measure, then sift)
4 rounded teaspoons
bkg. Pwd.
• Preheat oven to 325
degrees.
• Cream the first four
ingredients with a mixer.
Mix the flour and bkg
Pwd together in a separate
help you evaluate your proper motorcar,
suggest what needs attention, and point
out things that could be problems for
you in the future. Something that could
cost you an arm and a leg at a dealership
or an auto shop!
The people in the Texas Region are great.
You should get to know as many of them
as you can. There is a lot of knowledge
to be gained and friendships to be made.
The stories told and information shared
are well worth the effort.
I am very happy I decided to attend last
year’s Tech Seminar. I came out of it
enlightened and much more knowledgeable
of the vehicle I’d recently purchased.
I wish I would have joined prior to
buying my car... so I would have been
more knowledgeable prior to making my
purchase. I look forward to future events
and maintaining communication with
fellow club members. Thank you all for
a very good weekend and welcome to the
club.
we feast, laugh, and share those special
memories with each other. One of her
most requested desserts was her Tea
Cakes, very fitting for Proper Motor Car
owners, don’t you think?! It makes 5
dozen cookies, perfect for a large holiday
gathering. Maybe these will become one
of your families favorites.
bowl. Add the milk to the
creamed mixture, and then
add the flour till all
ingredients are incorpo
rated on low speed.
• Drop by rounded table
spoons on a cookie sheet
lined with parchment paper
and bake for 12-14 until
edges are very light gold
en brown. Be careful not
to overbake. Cool 5 min
utes on the cookie sheet,
then remove to cool
or begin eatin’!
in 1924 by Capt. J. F. Duff and Mr. F. C. Clement. The second car is the famous Three Litre Bentley driven by Mr. S.
C. H. Davis and Dr. J. D. Benjafield which won after a historic crash in the 1927 race. The third car is the Veteran 4
touring and re-appeared a LeMans in 1928, being driven to victory by Capt. Barnato and Mr. B. Rubin. The fourth
car is the 6 ½ Liter Speed Model which won in 1929, completing the “hat trick” and setting up record speed for the
course, driven by Capt. Barnato and Capt. Birkin. With the exception of Capt. Duff all the drivers mentioned are
shown in this photograph. Below(Now!):
The New Bentley Mulsanne Makes Its Debut
While paying homage to past Bentley
greats, the brief for the new Mulsanne’s
design and engineering teams was to create
a Bentley that represents the pinnacle
of British luxury motoring.
The new Mulsanne, designed and engineered
at Crewe from the ground-up,

eaffirms the marque’s intent to create a
new flagship Bentley with refined performance,
unparalleled levels of interior
luxury and coach building skills to the
fore. The return of the Mulsanne name
underlines Bentley’s sporting heritage
and passion for power and speed. Nothing
reflects that prowess better than the
legendary Le Mans 24 Hours, a race that
Bentley has won on six occasions, where
its powerful and reliable race cars thundered
down the long Le Mans straight
into the famous Mulsanne corner, from
which the new model takes its name.
A pure expression of Bentley design
The design of the new Mulsanne is a
unique fusion of sportiness, coachbuilt
elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley
S -Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne
features a bold frontal design dominated
by the traditional Bentley matrix grille
and highly prominent, classic round inner
headlamps with chrome surrounds,
flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp
clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting
technology. The iconic ‘Flying B’
retractable radiator mascot is available as
an option. The long bonnet, short front
overhang and long rear overhang help to
convey a sense of power and movement,
reinforced by muscular haunches and
sharply sculptured lines which flow gracefully
from the front wings to the rear.
Uniquely designed 20-inch wheels (and
optional 21-inch) reinforce the Mulsanne’s
powerful, sporting stance.
Design Director Dirk van Braeckel
explains the inspiration behind the
Mulsanne’s distinctive appearance: “The
opportunity to design a new flagship
Bentley is something afforded to very few
designers. The team set out to create a
sculpted form that blended classic Bentley
heritage cues with modern lines that
allow the marque to stride confidently
into the 21st century.” The body is
produced in a new manufacturing facility
at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe where
traditional metalworking skills, developed
over six decades, are still used extensively
during the nine-week build process. It is
the very opposite of volume-production
car-building… but the very epitome of
Bentley.
Sumptuous interior meets
advanced technology
The Bentley interior design team has
continued to develop and evolve the
luxurious interiors for which their cars are
renowned, based on a large-scale, research
programme to identify the classic signature
features that have defined Bentleys from
the 1920s to the present day. Armed with
this invaluable resource, the Mulsanne’s
design team set itself highly challenging
targets for key interior characteristics such
as material design, smell, colour harmony
and handcrafting. Similar targets were set
for the operational refinement and robustness
of all control mechanisms. The result
is a hand crafted interior that fully reflects
traditional Bentley values, executed to the
highest possible standards, where customers
may tailor their cars to their individual
specification.
As Head of Interior Design, Robin Page
says: “Over 170 hours – almost half the
entire build process – goes into crafting the

interior of the new Mulsanne. Each steering
wheel, for example, can take 15 hours to
hand-stitch (and three times longer if the
customer opts for cross-stitching). Stainless
steel brightware gleams so perfectly thanks
to an intensive 10-hour finishing process. A
wood veneer takes two weeks to turn from
a rough root ball into a full set of mirrormatched,
fine-polished leaves.
Re-engineered V8 engine and
new chassis: power, refinement
and efficiency
The Bentley powertrain engineers were set
three objectives for the Mulsanne: 1) To
produce the effortless torque from extremely
low revs that customers expect of a grand
Bentley 2) To maintain the highest levels of
refinement 3) To satisfy strict current and
future environmental standards through
improved engine efficiency
These new technologies are complemented
by the new eight-speed automatic transmission
which, for the first time on a flagship
Bentley, comes with steering-wheel
mounted gearshift. Overall, CO2 emissions
and fuel consumption are reduced by more
than 15 percent, in line with Bentley’s
environmental commitment.
Summary
While the all-new Bentley Mulsanne
pays respect to the past, it is a thoroughly
modern luxury car that offers the world’s
most exclusive driving experience – a
unique fusion of power, refinement and
September–October 2009 • The Lone Star Lady 9

By Stephan Elser
We have moved from The Hague
in the Netherlands beginning of
2008 and had the choice between
selling our old car or trying to drag it
along. Finally, it became clear that
we neither would find such a nice
daily driver again, nor would we
be able to sell at a reasonable price
on short notice. So, on we moved to
try to bring it along. And it worked
quite well, if we take all aspects into
account, although it added to the
considerable stress moving a family in
any case is. The following ramblings
try to share some of the learnings as
a lot of expats may be faced with
similar decisions.
10 The Lone Star Lady • September–October 2009
The main recommendation is to find a
classic car club in the new place (in our case:
Rolls Royce Owners Club Texas, http://
www.rroctexas.com/). They can provide
great information, will usually charge
nothing and give you additionally a perfect
welcome to the new location. In our case,
they even managed to find a person who had
done a similar car import a few years ago
and who helped us along and we had our
first party planned in Houston even before
we took off!
The basics to consider for a car import are:
• Cars younger than 25 years (CAUTION
– this may not apply in all cases.) You must
check with the US Dept of Transportation
for clarification) fall under the emission and
safety requirements of the US. Importing
them is generally considered unsuitable
for import as bonding cost (25 to 100%
of value of vehicle) and conversion costs
can often cost more than value of the auto.
Time frame in which to comply to standards
are about 90 days and failure to comply is
severe: car has to be re-exported, could be
confiscated, destroyed, and/or a fine up to
US $10,000 could be imposed.
This cannot be stressed enough: In case of
doubt, always contact the U.S. Department
of Transportation, National Highway Safety
Administration Office of Vehicle Safety
Compliance, NES-32, 407th Street S.W.,
Washington, DC20590. Web site: http://
www.nhtsa.dot.gov
• Cars older than 25 years (CAUTION –
this may not apply in all cases. You must
check with the US Dept of Transportation
for clarification) are exempt from almost
everything. Basically, there should be no big
problems. Most modifications will not pose
an issue (e.g. an LNG installation like our
S3 has).
But a tip: Be careful what you find on the
internet. Some institutions will try to sell
you things or not bother to answer your specific
situation, e.g. “Wallace Environmental
Testing Laboratories, Inc” who will happily
advise on a conversion to US safety and
emission specs…. for a few thousand dollars.
The paperwork involved:
• Collect ownership papers, insurance,
taxation report, bill / proof of buying the
car, copy of old registration, de-registration
form in the last country it was registered,
copy of your VISA, passport to prove you
are moving.
• Then fill in a Declaration for free entry
of unaccompanied articles (Customs Form
3299) + Supplemental declaration for unaccompanied
personal and household effects.
Your shipper will help here.
• Don’t forget the effort to de-register where
you come from (RDW, in case of Netherlands).
This also basically needs to be done
on the last moment, as afterwards you cannot
drive the car anymore.
• Don’t believe that shippers will do the
work for you. You will have to sort out
things mainly yourself. But fortunately, it’s
not a big deal.
Considerations for the main transport
should include:
• You obviously will need to find a reliable
shipper. Internet will serve you here, but
also it may not be too bad to use a reliable
known organization where you are coming
from. They usually need to work with
another agent on the other side anyway.
Let me remark that this can pose rather a
large problem, as even the best organization
may have to rely on a not as professional

counterpart.
• Need to choose whether to send the car in
a closed container or open (roll-on, roll-off).
Even in container is a risk as you cannot
really check the storage, so I’d recommend a
container quite strongly.
• Don’t forget to insure the car during
transport – in all phases! Risk between you
leaving it at the shipper and it going to the
ship plus the reverse in the US may be greatest
unknown you face.
Costs are consisting of shipping costs, US
Terminals and other port fees, Customs
clearance & taxes, Container transport &
unloading, insurance. There is no duty, if
you can show that you own the car personally.
The costs are not insignificant and seem
to have gone up over the last years, so be
clear on getting quotes.
After arrival, the work is not quite over...
What needs to be done quickly is:
• You will need to get insurance to drive the
car. Grundy or Hagerty are classic car insurers
in the US and recommended by the club.
Unfortunately they refuse to insure a car
which is used to drive to work daily as ours
is. To our great surprise, our normal insurer
(Farmers) insured the car quickly (within
24 hours!) and efficiently at a bargain
price. Thus, it does not always have to be a
dedicated classic car insurer; combining with
your normal service may be a valid option.
• Be sure though to get the taxation report
in English. US value is way below European
value, so your options are limited: either accept
lower insurance value, or have the thing
officially translated at significant cost.
• You’ll need to get the car registered in person
(at our dear Harris County Tax Office,
plan a few days for this). Also, the car will
need a police inspection to make sure it is
properly registered against theft. These guys
in contrast to the Tax Office are very friendly
and just love classic cars – so don’t worry, it’s
painless.
In case you now wonder: Yes, after all, the
move was well worth it. We tremendously
enjoy the car and the company in the club.
If anyone plans a similar exercise, feel free
to contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss
details.
