now came a change. The impetuosity <strong>of</strong> youth<br />

lacked <strong>the</strong> patience <strong>to</strong><br />

Science, and <strong>to</strong> abstain from drawing conclusions till all <strong>the</strong><br />

evidence had been ga<strong>the</strong>red out <strong>of</strong> all<br />

quarters, thoroughly<br />

examined, sorted, and duly valued. A short and easy<br />

method <strong>of</strong> decision was sought and taken.<br />

It was <strong>to</strong>o hard<br />

a lot <strong>to</strong> leave <strong>the</strong> inheritance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> promised land <strong>to</strong> a<br />

coming generation. If <strong>the</strong> evidence were <strong>to</strong>o unwieldy<br />

<strong>to</strong> be managed in <strong>the</strong> mass, some was valuable, and some<br />

not at all. Why not select <strong>the</strong> valuable, and be <strong>guide</strong>d<br />

by <strong>the</strong> verdicts it gave ?<br />

So arose <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Extreme Textualism.<br />

I. Lachmann, <strong>the</strong> celebrated philologist and critic, published<br />

with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> Philip Buttmann, an edition <strong>of</strong> tlie<br />

<strong>New</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> in two volumes, one <strong>of</strong> which came out in<br />

1842, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in 1850, and both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m at Berlin,<br />

where he was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />
