Frazer Cook<br />

In 1961, when Frazer Cook, ’65, was a 19-<br />

year-old UW sophomore living in Lander<br />

Hall, he got a call asking him to try out as<br />

pre-game and halftime announcer for the<br />

Husky Marching Band.<br />

For the past 51 years, his dulcet tones<br />

have rung out at Husky Stadium and are<br />

identified in the minds <strong>of</strong> all Huskies<br />

as the well-loved voice announcing the<br />

Husky Marching Band. Cook has never<br />

missed a single home game, bowl game<br />

or road game when the band played. For<br />

his work, Cook will receive the 2012 UWAA<br />

Distinguished Service Award.<br />

The award is the highest honor<br />

bestowed upon UW Alumni Association<br />

members and volunteers and is<br />

presented to an individual who has had<br />

a significant impact on the UWAA.<br />

In addition to Cook, both <strong>of</strong> his<br />

parents—Shirley Mae Cook, ’35, ’36,<br />

and George S. Cook, ’29, ’35—obtained<br />

degrees from the UW.<br />

Cook is looking forward to having a new<br />

public address booth when the Husky<br />

Stadium renovation is complete. “I may<br />

actually be able to see the Huskytron.”<br />

Nancy Amidei<br />

It’s hard to believe Nancy Amidei is retired.<br />

A lecturer in the UW School <strong>of</strong> Social<br />

Work from 1992 to 2008, Amidei’s days as<br />

a UW retiree are packed with the work <strong>of</strong><br />

advocating for social justice for the most<br />

vulnerable among us, and training people<br />

to be advocates for issues like tax reform,<br />

hunger, and homelessness.<br />

Amidei is the first recipient <strong>of</strong> the new<br />

UW / <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Washington</strong> Retirement<br />

Association Distinguished Retiree<br />

Excellence in Community Service Award.<br />

Pat Dougherty, director <strong>of</strong> Retiree<br />

Relations for the UW, says the goal <strong>of</strong> the<br />

new award is “to honor retirees who have<br />

made local, regional or even international<br />

contributions.”<br />

Amidei has presented as many as 100<br />

training sessions in civic engagement every<br />

year. In a 2008 interview, she said, “Different<br />

people are addicted to different<br />

things. I’m just addicted to democracy.”<br />

Amidei plans to continue helping people<br />

in <strong>Washington</strong> and across the U.S.<br />

find their voice as citizen advocates. “As<br />

long as people keep asking me, I’ll keep<br />

doing the work,” she says, before running<br />

<strong>of</strong>f to one more meeting.<br />
