Glen Street Theatre
Cultural Assets and Activities Audit
Regional Planning
Glen Street Theatre is a 400 seat proscenium
arch auditorium that presents a subscription
season of professional theatre productions,
quality children’s shows and community
events throughout the year including school
productions and dance concerts.
Glen Street Theatre regularly presents
productions from many of Australia’s
major performing arts companies including
Sydney Theatre Company, Company B,
Bell Shakespeare, Griffin Theatre Company,
Queensland Theatre Company, Melbourne’s
Playbox Theatre, Perth Theatre Company, The
State Theatre Company of South Australia
and other significant independent production
companies including Circus Oz, Pork Chop
Productions, Performing Lines and Hit
Productions.
The theatre has enjoyed a long association with
community organisations including local dance
and theatre schools, which continue to use the
venue for their concerts and productions.
The number of Glen Street Theatre subscribers
has increased dramatically over the last decade,
with over 4,500 subscribers in 2006.
During the preparation of the Cultural Plan, a cultural
assets and activities audit was undertaken to help develop
a clear picture of the assets, resources and activities
already available in the Warringah area. This list was
developed by utilising Council’s community directory, The
Yellow Pages, Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, and
Council statistics and reports. These assets and resources
have included: reserves and sportsfields, employment
in the cultural and recreational industries, commercial
resources, and restaurants and café’s.
A summary of the audit results are contained in Appendix
B, with a full list available from Council’s website.
In addition to planning for culture throughout the
local government area, this plan also considers
culture in a regional context. Communities and
culture are not bounded by local government areas
and it is not always possible or desirable to replicate
resources already being provided on a regional basis.
Major cultural facilities located in the northern
Sydney region in addition to those provided by
Warringah Council include:
• Manly Art Gallery and Museum
• Star of the Sea Theatre – Manly
• Zenith Theatre – Chatswood
• Ku-ring-gai Art Centre and Gallery
• Proposed Civic Place Development – Chatswood
