The initial phases of this project relied on an understanding
of controlled environments in order to create
a self-contained system specific to the plant. The
“Nerve plant” eco-unit is made up of three planting
spaces, linked by channels that filter the heat given
off by the two lower plants into the upper chamber.
This creates an environment humid enough that the
third plant requires no maintenance.
The most challenging aspect of the site is its narrow
dimension as the lot of a former townhome. In order to
maximize the lot’s potential for an urban greenhouse,
a series of sectional metal louvers reflect light down
into the narrow space. Additionally, the roofline is
designed to channel rainwater via the louvers toward
the back of the structure and into a reservoir accessible
from the lowest level - facilitating the growth and
study of aquatic and shade-dwelling species as well.
