SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH (SOTV)
“We are passionate about fostering faithfulness to Jesus along our individual and shared journeys of faith.”
It’s Growing Season!
I received some good humored ribbing for my last bi-monthly newsletter article.
To quote myself: “By the time you read this in early April, the snow will be gone, the
birds will have returned, and the earth will have thawed to bring forth new life.”
Pastor Chris Smith
Summer Schedule
The summer worship schedule
begins Memorial Day weekend
and ends Labor Day weekend.
“Celebration Worship”
in the Sanctuary:
Saturdays at 5 PM
Sundays at 8:30
& 10:30 AM
“The Table”
in the Great Hall:
Sundays at 10:30 AM
“Cabin Worship”
in the Chapel:
Mondays at 7 PM*
*Except on the following Mondays:
Memorial Day, May 30, July 4
and Labor Day, September 5.
What was I thinking I just read the forecast for May 1: 32 degrees and light snow.
But let me repeat my confident words: By the time you read this, the earth will be
green, the trees verdant with leaves, and the critters in our backyards will be busy at
work (maybe you are one of those critters!).
For Minnesotans, this is the season of growth. It’s the same for us in church. With
June comes the church season of Pentecost. Pentecost is distinguished by the color
green (look for that color in worship). Pentecost is the green season, a season of
growth.
How will you grow this summer Is it time to get back to worship after a time
away No matter the reason, you’ll receive a smile and a welcome when you come
back. There are many ways to renew your faith. Worship is a good beginning.
Between worship services this summer Pastor Mary Lund and member Mark Gilligan
will offer a study on the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Come grow your
faith by immersing yourself in the Word, too.
I’m convinced that God encourages growth all through our lives as well.
Remember: The Lord of the resurrection is about abundant life for you. Abundant life
is a comprehensive idea: Because God saved you from sin and death, He has made you
to absolutely relish life. Is it time to get back to exercising – to grow your strength and
“un-grow” some weight Are there relationships to renew Contacts you have let go
fallow Schedule time to have a cup of coffee with an old friend. Is there a skill or
talent you could cultivate An old friend of mine learned the piano for the first time at
age 50. He says it brings him joy. Another learned a foreign language. She says it’s
renewing her mind.
It’s growing season. God wants your whole life to be abundant. Grow your faith in
the Lord. Make your life blossom in new ways.
Pastor Duane
on Sabbatical
May, June, & July
Shepherd of the Valley pastors are able
to take a 12 week sabbatical if they have
served the church for seven years.
A sabbatical is a time when a pastor takes
leave of his/her regular duties in order to
have some time for refreshment, relaxation,
and renewal. Pastor Duane last took a
sabbatical in 2004.
Pastor Duane’s sabbatical is from
May 2 to July 25. During this time
he plans to relax, read, play golf,
travel a bit, work on a special
project connected to Shepherd of
the Valley, volunteer some of his
time for Crossways International
Bible Study, and be involved in his
son’s wedding.
During his time away from the
office, Pastor Duane’s regular
pastoral duties and tasks will be
taken up by other pastors and staff
members.
Pipe Organ Update
A HUGE thank you to everyone
who attended, donated, bid,
and volunteered at our May 14th
Dinner & Auction benefit
―Get ORGAN-ized!‖
We are so grateful for the financial
received for the pipe organ. Our
goal is to raise $1.1 million; we
are over halfway there but still
have a long way to go to meet
this challenge.
Work continues on schedule for
the organ, to be installed in the
Sanctuary in September.
Dear SOTV-
Wow! We are so grateful for the
New Psalms by SOTV
Participants in Pastor Mary Lund‘s 2011 Friday morning Bible
study (photo at left) studied the Pslams this spring and got the
opportunity to create two new Psalms, the first of which can be
read below. The second will be in our next bi-monthly issue in
August. The group will study the Book of Revelation in the fall,
and anyone is welcome to attend.
Bible Studies for All
We have set a goal of 16,500 adult Bible study hours for the
2010-2011 year. Through the end of April 2011, we have
clocked 15,126 hours of community Bible study at SOTV.
Last year at this time we had 14,152 hours.
We want to be a Biblically fluent congregation—and we’re
almost at our goal. You can help by attending our summer
by Pastor Duane Paetznick upon his return from sabbatical:
“I & II Samuel”
Thursdays 7-8:30 PM (Sept 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, Nov 3, 10, 17)
“The Bible: The Biography”
Tuesdays 7-8:30 PM (Nov 1, 8, 15, 22, 29)
“The Gospel of Mark”
Thursdays 7-8:30 PM (Jan 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, 23, Mar 1, 8, 15)
“The Book of Jonah”
Thursdays 7-8:30 PM (April 12, 19, 26, May 3)
Psalm 151
Thank you God, for freedom.
Thank you God, for your steadfast love.
Thank you for your many blessings.
God, you are awesome.
Oh, that we had more energy,
So that we could sing your praises.
But we have been disobedient and naughty;
We have not followed your Word.
We once met at a school,
With a small community of believers led by Pastor Paul.
We grew out of room faster and faster and with more pastors,
By your work, O God.
1996 was a good year.
We had a bell parade to celebrate
and a stained glass quilt to commemorate.
A new sanctuary for you, O God.
Thousands to hear your Word each week.
For the 170,000 who had not heard your Word,
We pray for guidance and direction to reach out and serve.
We are blessed, O God, by your faithfulness to us.
You have been our constant shepherd,
In this our great big valley.
God, you are awesome. This is most certainly true.
Walk
for
Water
Bring a bucket and
your walking shoes to
worship. We‘re walking
to raise funds and
awareness for Mahove,
a remote village of our
Tanzanian parish.
3 walking opportunities, following worship:
Saturday, July 16 at 5 PM
Sunday, July 17 at 8:30 & 10:30 AM
W
ater borne disease is a leading
cause of death for children
under five in developing countries,
killing more children than AIDS,
malaria and measles combined.
Women and girls spend hours
fetching water, walking an average
of 3 miles a day, often at the
expense of their education.
We hope to raise $15,000 to pipe
water 15 kilometers from its source
to Mahove, where there will be five
access points (faucets) spread
throughout the village.
The Walks: At the end of each worship service, walkers will be blessed and sent on
their way to fetch water and carry it back to church using one of the following routes:
The Tungamalenga Walk— A short walk to Falcon Ridge Middle School, about the
same distance walked each day for water in Tungamalenga Village.
The Mahove Walk— A longer walk (1.5 miles) to Camp Sacagawea in Lebanon Hills
Park. The same distance our friends from Mahove walk now each day for water.
After-walk celebrations will include fun family activities and refreshments. The
collected water will be used for church landscaping and community gardens.
Fundraising Goals: Walkers are challenged to each raise $100 or more by asking
family and friends to sponsor them. Every $1000 raised brings water one kilometer
closer to Mahove! There is no registration fee for the walk and donation envelopes
will be available before and after the event. Donations are tax deductible.
Information packets with sponsorship materials are available at the Welcome Center.
LSS Spotlight: Disaster Services
Lutheran Social Service (LSS) provides disaster recovery services
throughout Minnesota. In the past, recovery services have been provided
in places affected by floods and tornadoes. These services include long-term
disaster case management, volunteer coordination, rebuild assistance,
mental health supports, financial counseling and other related disaster
recovery services. Volunteers are utilized to provide valuable physical help,
and to offer families great comfort by simply showing up and letting them
know that they are not alone.
In addition to the services listed above, LSS also provides a camp for children
who live in areas affected by disaster called Camp Noah. It’s a safe, caring
and fun environment with curriculum specifically designed to help children
heal by processing their disaster experience.
You can visit www.lssmn.org/disaster to learn more about disaster services.
If you would like to find out more about SOTV's relationship with LSS and
how you can be involved please contact the LSS Ambassadors at
Our Daily Bread Food Shelf
The number of people that receive food stamps in the Unites States hit a record
44.2 million in January. That's up 4.7 million from a year ago. In Minnesota, almost
a half a million people benefit from this program. Today, one in seven Americans
receive food stamps, the highest share of the population ever to do so, according to
the Food Research and Action Center. (CNN Money)
Food shelf demand has remained fairly stable with around 20 families visiting
most weeks. To meet demand and increase our capacity, the food shelf is creating
partnerships with neighboring congregations, Second Harvest Food Bank and
even Costco to ensure a steady stream of donations and to make our dollars
stretch further.
SOTV members in need of help from our food shelf can work with one of our
pastors or contact 360Communities at (952) 985-5300.
Caring for Creation
WATER - THE GIFT OF LIFE.
We can live about three days without it, but without water, no food, or anything
else, can be grown. Minnesota has more lakes and rivers than any of the other
states except Alaska and Hawaii, making us among the most fortunate people of the
world for our access to clean water. More than one of every six people in the world
do not have access to it.
On average, women and girls in those areas walk four miles each day to carry 5
gallons, 42 pounds, of water that is often not clean back to where they live. More
than two million people in developing countries, most of them children, die each
year from diseases associated with unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation
and poor hygiene.
In the decade preceding 2006, bottled water sales tripled, to $11 billion per year.
Since then, they have nearly doubled to $21 billion per year, equaling the total
spent on all U.S. water systems. That annual amount, in eight years, would pay for
water wells for approximately one billion people, nearly all of those who currently
lack it.
SOTV is having a “Walk for Water” this year to provide a new well for the
Tungamalenga Parish. We need to support it and make it a success! See more
details on page 17.
Fair Trade Coffee
A variety of delicious coffees, teas, cocoa, and chocolate is available for
purchase every third weekend of the month (after Saturday worship and
between Sunday worship).
Purchasing fair trade items helps people in other communities feed and
shelter their children as well as improving schools and healthcare.
