sotv.org/visionGrowing Into Our VisionLet’s Get Caught Up!An Update on SOTV’s Vision and MinistryChris SmithSenior PastorThis summer wasa busy time atSOTV as wemoved forwardwith many of theplans related toOur Vision. Asthe church revsup for another year, let’s take a momentto get caught up.All Worship is Now in the SanctuaryAll weekend worship services now takeplace in our Sanctuary. We began thisback in June. Our worship hours remainunchanged (see sidebar), although thelocation of band-led worship has movedfrom the Great Hall at 9:45 and 11:00 tothe single time of 11:00 in the Sanctuary. Our worship hours of 5:00 pm on Saturdayand 8:30 and 9:45 on Sunday continueto be organ and piano-led.Thank You for Your TrustWe asked many of you who worship at9:45 and 11:00 to adjust your weekly routinesby worshipping in a new locationor at a new hour. This was a big thing toask, and we are grateful that so many ofyou responded positively. We believehaving a single, main worship space ishelpful and accommodating to visitors, and leads to greater unity in our faithcommunity. Thank you for your faith, trust, and patience as we work towardfulfilling Our Vision.Band-led Worship at 11:00As noted above, band-led worship isnow taking place in the Sanctuary at11:00. Staff and volunteer leaders whohad been leading worship in the GreatHall put together a great plan and thetransition to the sanctuary went verywell. The response has been great. If youhaven’t tried band-led worship yet, youare welcome to join us!Fellowship in the Great HallWe have moved Sunday fellowship tothe Great Hall where there is more roomto sit and visit with each other. Newvideo screens are now in place as well asprojectors, cameras, and a new productionstation in the rear of the sanctuary, complete with a new soundboard.Providing excellent audio and videoquality is essential for worship – fromclearly hearing the words of the Gospelto seeing a newborn baptized all the wayin the back row. We have already heardmany words of appreciation for some ofthis early work and we will continue tomake improvements and tweaks eachweek to bring you an excellent worshipexperience.Staffing UpdatesIn April, we welcomed Omar Reyes asour new production manager. Around the ChurchHoly Land ShepherdsProviding HopeBy Kristi KuhnauMost people know that Christianity got its start inBethlehem seven centuries before Europe wasChristianized. A lesser known fact is that Bethlehem, located in West Bank, Palestine, still contains one of the oldestChristian communities (made up of Palestinian-Arab Christians)in the world, which is currently endangered from thestrain of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.A group of Shepherd of the Valley members (see picture atright) traveled to Israel in 2011, where they learned first-handthe plight of Bethlehem’s Palestinians. Their freedom ofmovement outside the city is greatly inhibited by the Israeligovernment and the 25-foot wall that surrounds the city onthree sides. The SOTV travelers visited the International Centerof Bethlehem, a social welfare organization that overseesinitiatives such as a senior care program and a group for youngpeople and families. They met Dr. Mitri Raheb, a nativePalestinan/Arab Lutheran pastor who has worked tirelesslyto increase hope and provide opportunities for the Palestiniansin Bethlehem.Dr. Raheb does this work through a US based non-profit group,Bright Stars of Bethlehem. Their mission is to “grow hope” inPalestine by connecting people in the United States to theseministry efforts in the Holy Land:Diyar Academy for Children and YouthDar al-Kalima CollegeAzwaj Young Families ProgramAjyal Senior Care ProgramThe SOTV travelers have since formed a group called HolyLand Shepherds with the mission to support the Christiansin the Holy Land by expanding understanding of PalestinianChristian issues within our congregation; to broaden thecongregational understanding of our roots in the Holy Land;to identify and implement specific projects and seek funding tosupport these projects. Here is a short summary of what theHoly Land Shepherds have been up to since 2011:‣ Collected about 3,000 books for schools in Bethlehem(some of which are pictured above)‣ Hosted a performance of young dancers fromDiyar Academy‣ Hosted lectures on Israeli and Palestinian issues.‣ Stocked the SOTV library with books on the history andissues of the Palestinian conflict. (see page 15)‣ Raised money for art programs at Dar al-Kalima College‣ Currently raising funds for a Parish Nurses in theAjyal Senior Care ProgramLook in this newsletter over the coming year for moreinformation about the various programs Bright Stars ofBethlehem offers. We hope you will be inspired by the HolyLand Shepherds to learn about these issues and supportprograms which provide hope in Bethlehem.SCENES FROM SUMMERFrom left:Middle schoolers make“Summer Stretch” byworking at Feed MyStarving Children;Making crafts at CampWapo; Washing cars atthe “I'm a Helper” CampOur Vision: Invite all people to experience the welcome, transformation, and sending of Jesus Christ | 5

Giving & ServingThank You for an AMAZING Shepherd’s Sale!By Deb SchraderThe Shepherd’s Sale is an annual eventfull of fellowship, giving, and support forour community. Every year it gets biggerand better, and 2013 was no exception. Our 20 th year was an amazing successin so many ways: we had excellentvolunteers; we were blessed with themost donations of any other year;and best of all we raised over $29,000(including a supplement from ThriventFinancial) – all of which will go towardchildren in need in our community. There are many people to thank formaking the 2013 Shepherd’s Sale sucha success, and a casual observer maybe surprised how much work goes onbehind the scenes.Thank you so much to each and every oneof our awesome volunteers! The numberof hours needed to support this Sale isoverwhelming, and our volunteers arevery generous with their time. We areblessed to have many experiencedleaders, able to jump right in and helpwherever they are needed. Our volunteersreally embodied the spirit of Our Visionof welcoming all people to ExperienceJesus. It was truly a wonder to behold! Many new volunteers discovered the funof working the sale for the first time. Weespecially enjoyed the help from theyouth and leaders from Summer Stretch. They were incredible in helping us getthe equipment from Prince of Peaceloaded and moved into SOTV. They alsocame back to help during the sale set up!Volunteering is powerful – and the workis more fun and goes much faster withmore hands to help.Did you know we have Tent Guardians? These volunteers stay overnight in ourparking lot to make sure the contents ofthe tents are kept safe, scare off potentialvandals, and keep us from having to setup the tents each day!Thank you to those who generouslydonated goods to sell. Your donatedclothing, housewares, books, toys, furniture, and more, is what makes our salepossible. Our volunteers are sustained byall of the great food that is donated! Thetimes that we break to eat are times offellowship and sharing. We are thankful for our amazingcommunity partners. Prince of Peacegenerously lent us coat racks, shoe racks, table toppers, shelving and wagons. This offsets our expenses, and helps usdisplay our sale items better than everbefore. Apple Valley Rental not only setup the two tents, but gave of their time tofill them with tables. Schwan’s donated750 handled bags for our bag sale. Cubdonated 600 grocery bags. DaveKocemba from Junk Happens generouslydonated his time and truck to pick upand deliver donations to SOTV and takeextra clothing donations to Goodwill. The Salvation Army made multiple tripsto pick up all of the goods left over fromthe sale.Raising over $29,000 for children in needis a great feat, but it’s only the tip of thegiving iceberg. The sale provides qualityitems for the community to purchase atvery reasonable prices. We heard frommany people how grateful they were forour sale. Local nonprofits and familieswere able to receive gifts of donatedhousehold items and clothing. Tungamalengasotv.org/tanzania | tungamalenga.blogspot.comUpdate on Fall Guests from TanzaniaBy Kirsten Levorson, Partnership CoordinatorUPDATED: August 29, 2013 – In the fallnewsletter mailed to homes we stated thatour guests this fall would be Pastor JohnMhekwa, Pastor Paulo Masinga, andMfaume Kisakanike. Just last week, wewere dismayed to learn that both Pauloand Mfaume were denied visas to travelto the U.S. Due to the complicated andcostly process involved, they will not bereapplying for entry. John will be our onlyguest this fall, and we will invite Mfaumeand Paulo another year when US embassyconditions are more favorable. Many people made very generousdonations at our Tanzania auction backin January to pay for travel and hostingcosts for our guests. So how do we usethese funds in a way that honors boththe donors and the originally intendedrecipients? We are currently pursuingthree options:1. Retain the funds for the next time wehost guests from Tanzania2. Give a gift toward the Mpalapandeprimary school in Paulo's village anda gift toward a roof for the chapel inKisilwa, Mfaume's home village.3. Invite two other guests for this fallwho are more likely to be approvedfor a travel visa. The Tanzania Steering Committee willmake a decision at an upcoming meeting.Donors are invited to give us a feedbackon these three options. Please watch theweekly News for the Flock for moreupdates. In the meantime, we are veryexcited that Rev.
