From the President
Kevin Bartley
President
This month I write my final
article as the 72nd President
of Odessa Country Club.
Thanks to all the members
who have been so gracious
and encouraging over the
years.
I have had an unusual tenure
in that I took over an unexpired
term and then had
three years of my own term for a total of four years. During this
time, among our Board Members were four Past Presidents.
The first two years on the Board I had the pleasure of sitting
next to the first woman to ever serve on the Odessa Country
Club Board of Directors - Jan Roden. I am thankful for that experience.
Odessa Country Club has always had people willing to serve
and bring in their time and expertise which makes this Club
what it is.
We have “wonderful” problems at Odessa Country Club.
We do not worry because our financial outlook is strong and
stable and therefore we can work on things such as capital improvements
to make the Club better.
Our Long Range Planning Committee is looking into many
improvements from the half-way house and restrooms on the
course, to the possibility of golf teaching centers, better turf
on the old course and many others. Odessa Country Club is
also looking into a survey so that the members will have some
input as to what priorities we should keep in mind.
Tim Peden will be a wonderful 73rd President to continue
our progress.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as President
of Odessa Country Club.
- Kevin Bartley
From the Manager
Spring winds have been abundant
this year. Calm days have been
few and far between. I know your
golf and tennis matches have been
challenged by both your opponent
and these winds. As the summer approaches,
we look forward to these
winds fading away.
May begins with a special celebration
for all the Mothers. Sunday,
Ryan George
General Manager
May 8th we will feature a day of no
cooking or cleaning for these special ladies. Plan to bring your
Mother to the Club for our exceptional brunch. Reservations
are a must. The month ends with our Memorial Day celebration
on Monday the 30th. Activities begin at 3:00 PM.
Our new turn room and restrooms are looking great. The
contractor will be working hard to complete these structures
during the next month. We are excited about the new locations
and the additional services we can provide you while on
the links course.
See you around the Club.
in any way.
From the Fairway
May is a busy month for us here at
Odessa Country Club. Golf season is
in full swing. Our tournament schedule
is highlighted this month by the
Junior College NCAA National Championship.
We are extremely proud to
be hosting this event at OCC and we
are looking for volunteers to help out.
If you would like to see some great
young golfers in action, contact the
Clay Kinnaird
Director of Golf
golf shop to get signed up to help out.
This month we will also be hosting the
Wrangler Scramble, which is a wonderful
tournament that raises money for the OC Sports Programs.
There is also plenty of opportunity to play in club events this
month as well. For the men, we have the Stroke Play Championship.
It will be 36 holes of stroke play championship golf flighted
by handicap, and we will also have a separate senior division. We
have the Couples Invitational this month, so grab your significant
other to get signed up and enjoy two great days of golf together.
For the ladies, we have the Flutterbye, so get a team together and
get signed up for what is sure to be a wonderful time. For your
junior golfer, our Golf Professional staff will be running a Junior
Camp to get them ready for their summer golf season. Also, for
the PGA of America’s Free Lesson Month, we will be hosting two
free clinics on the 6th & 27th. We hope to see you there. Finally,
to round out our busy tournament schedule, Odessa Country
Club is proud to host the US Open local qualifier.
As you all know, West Texas is still suffering heavily from the
drought conditions of the past year. Odessa Country Club would
appreciate your cooperation in observing the cart rules. This
means keeping the carts on the paths whenever possible, and
especially using the paths around all greens and not parking or
driving in worn areas.
My staff and I are looking forward to good weather and taking
care of all your golf needs. Come see us!
See you on the Links,
TPI Golf Fitness
Tip of the Month
Jake McCullough - PGA Head Golf Professional
Certified TPI Golf Fitness Instructor
One of the tests we do with our Golf Fitness Evaluations is
called the Single Leg Balance. It measures your ability to balance
or stabilize on each leg.
Your balance on each leg is very important
to your golf game. If you are a right handed
golfer and are unable to balance on your
right leg, then you may have issues creating
a good weight shift and balancing on
your right leg at the top of your backswing.
Without good stability in your right leg, you
may be prone to a reverse pivot or swaying.
The same is true for your balance on your
left leg. If you cannot balance on your left leg
into impact and the through swing, then you
could be prone to sliding or hanging back on
your right side. All of these swing errors
can significantly rob you of distance and
accuracy.
To test your single leg balance, stand on
one leg and raise your other leg until your
thigh is completely horizontal. Keep your
hands by your side and close your eyes
(this takes away your vision and forces
you to use proprioception). Count how
many seconds you’re able to maintain your
balance without putting your other leg
down, hopping, or moving your arms. If you
are unable to hold your balance for at least
11-15 seconds, then you need to do some
strength training in your legs. Remember,
test both legs. If you find a deficiency in
your balance, it may be the thing that has held you back from
what you are working on in your golf swing.
For more on how your fitness can affect your golf game or to
go through a Golf Fitness Evaluation, come by and talk with one
of our Golf Professionals.
Food & Drink
Culinary
Corner
By Tim Alfrey
One of the best things about living in West Texas is that our
BBQ season starts much earlier than the most of the country
and some of you would argue that it never really ends. Being
originally from Kansas City (my personal choice for BBQ
capitol of the world, sorry Texas!), I’ve been steeped in the
rich culinary culture and history that exists in the area from
an early age. Today, I’m going to show you my recipe for KC
Style BBQ Chicken. Not all of us are blessed with a smoker of
our own, so we’ll be using a regular covered charcoal grill (gas
will also be fine).
To get the best flavor, we will brine the chicken. It’s best to
let it sit overnight in the brine, but a good hours soak will be
fine if you’re in a hurry! If you’re using a charcoal grill, you’ll
need to keep your coals all the way on one side. For most of
the time, we’ll be cooking the chicken with indirect heat, we’ll
only give the chicken a good marking above the fire at first.
Gas grill users simply turn on only half your burners. For our
smoke, we need a couple handfuls of presoaked wood chips
in a small packet made of aluminum foil, with a few holes
poked in the top. The choice of wood is up to you, traditionally
they used hickory or pecan in Kansas City, but some local mesquite
would be great as well. Let’s get started :
Ingredients
For your brine you will need:
2 qts water
3 tbl salt
3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
4 sprigs of thyme or rosemary
6 pieces of leg&thigh pieces, bone in and still connected
Combine everything in a bowl, making sure the salt dissolves
completely. Pour mixture into 2 gallon zip-lock bag and add the
chicken. Let sit in the fridge for at least an hour, up to overnight.
Now for the sauce:
1 piece of bacon, chopped
1 sprig of either the thyme or rosemary,
whichever you used on the chicken
2 tbl olive oil
½ onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, chopped
2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons red or white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon paprika or smoked paprika
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Heat the oil in a sauce pan on medium heat. Add the bacon
and thyme and cook slowly, until the bacon fat is rendered out.
Add the onion and garlic and cook till the onion starts to turn
light brown, about five minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients
and reduce the heat to low, cooking for about 20 minutes and
stilling frequently. Once the sauce is done, reserve about 1 cup of
it to serve with the chicken, the rest is for basting.
Start your coals, or preheat your gas grill to about 357 deg. Oil
your grill surface with an oiled paper towel. Remove the chicken
from the brine, drain it and pat it dry with a towel. Put the chicken
directly above the fire, cook for 5 mins, flip, and cook for 5 mins
more. Move your chicken to the side opposite the heat. Toss
your foil packet of wood chips directly on the coals and lower
the lid, cooking for about 15-20 mins. Open the lid, slowly, and
liberally baste the chicken with the BBQ sauce, making sure to
coat every surface. Replace the lid, cook for another 25-30 mins
(basting once more halfway through), until the internal temp of
the chicken reaches 165 degrees. Serve with some coleslaw, BBQ
beans and more sauce!
Golf Course News
As another month passes without rainfall and the drought continues, we are reminded daily
how dependent we are on our irrigation systems. The Links Course is holding up fairly well with
the only major issues being along the perimeter of the golf course where we don’t have adequate
head to head irrigation coverage. On the Old Course however, we are experiencing many
irrigation challenges. First up, our Watertronics irrigation pump station control system for the
fairways & roughs (different manufacturer from Links Course system and Old Course greens system)
is giving us fits which has limited our ability to irrigate as much as we need. We continue to
work with the Watertronics manufacturer representatives and technical personnel to resolve the
problem. Second, our irrigation head spacing on fairways and roughs along with high winds at
Greg Hinton
night has restricted/limited our head to head irrigation coverage that results in some areas being
Dir. of Golf Course Maint.
very wet and other areas being very dry. Third, the lack of rainfall also shows us how trees affect
the coverage/distribution of irrigation by blocking head to head coverage (see photos opposite page). Finally, the challenges we
are facing with this unusual weather pattern gives us the opportunity to fine tune our irrigation systems which will give us even
better turf coverage in the future.
Now to grass growing. The Old Course fairways and adjacent rough are receiving additional fertility to help improve growth.
The fairways will also receive an additional gypsum application along with a wetting agent/synthetic acid product to help reduce
salt levels and help water penetration into the soil. The lack of rainfall has resulted in an increase in salt levels which makes soils very
hard and infertile. The consistent use of soluble calcium along with liquid compost will help improve the soils ability to displace
salt, promote microbrial activity and improve overall soil conditions. This program will be done on a monthly basis and will show
great benefits by improving soil structure therefore improved
turf quality.
Upcoming projects (cultural practices) in May: Aerify Old
Course Tees – May 1st. We have suspended Old Course aerification
until fairways re-establish. We will spike/vent thin fairway
areas as needed.
In these difficult drought conditions, your golf course staff
is committed to working hard to meet these challenging times.
Most golf course superintendents and their staff are dedicated
professional committed to meeting the everyday challenges of
maintaining golf courses in sometimes very challenging conditions,
both economically (finding good employees) and environmentally
(no rain). And then there’s Augusta National and The
Business Spotlight
The publisher of the Pipeline would like to spotlight one of our advertisers each month that make this
newsletter possible. We will provide a free profile of their business, personnel, products and or service. We
urge all members to consider them first when purchasing products or services. If you are an advertiser in the
Pipeline, and would like your business featured in the coming months, please call Charles Kenimer, General
Manager, Arrow Printing Inc. 432-335-3407.
This month we are featuring White House Meat Market.
Whitehouse Meat Market has proudly served the Permian
Basin since 1956. Thanks to loyal customers and a great deal
of hard work, Whitehouse remains second to none. Year after
year Whitehouse ranks #1 in the Odessa American’s “Best of
the Basin”.
The famous Whitehouse cheeseburgers have put Whitehouse
on the map, but the meat market offers much more in
quality products. Everything from backyard BBQ’s to oilfield
cookouts are made easy by calling Whitehouse.
“Jason Munos, store manager, carries out day to
day operations. He and the other employees do an outstanding
job. I am so proud of this business. After WWII, my grandfather Eldon Maney moved to
Clint Fletcher, Owner
Odessa and opened up shop a decade later. Some years were leaner than others, but like my Dad,
Olan, always says, ‘Work hard, be honest, and just keep showing up.’ That motto has stuck with
me in every endeavor.”
- Clint Fletcher
Clint is also owner of SanJan Trucking and Giant Oilfield Services. Currently Clint serves as a member on
“Specializing in Quality Meat Since 1956”
the Odessa Chamber Board of Directors, The Joe
Beene Foundation and The Education Foundation.
He became co-owner of Whitehouse in
