REQUIRED ELEMENTS FOR TRYOUT: DANCE – As taught by outgoing seniors JUMPS – Side hurdler, Front hurdler and Toe touch CHEER – As taught by outgoing seniors BASIS FOR JUDGING: Accuracy/technique Appearance Attitude Ability to cover mistakes Attendance Enthusiasm/Smile Practice participation Consistent eligibility Knowledge of the routines Voice projection Poise REQUIRED PAPERWORK: Before any candidate may begin mandatory practices or tryout, the following must be turned into Tiger Cage by APRIL 2 nd . · CHEER CONTRACT (signed by the student and parent · (3)TEACHER EVALUATIONS · COPIES OF YOUR PREVIOUS PROGRESS REPORT AND SEMESTER REPORT CARD · NEW OR RETURNING ATHLETE PACKETS (COMPLETELY FILLED OUT). Note: IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS A PHYSICAL, YOU CAN NOT HAVE THE PHYSICAL DONE UNTIL AFTER APRIL 1 ST . Note: THIS PHYSICAL CAN BE TURNED INTO THE TIGER CAGE ON MONDAY APRIL 13 TH , AFTER SCHOOL, BEFORE TRYOUTS BEGIN AT 4:30 p.m. MANDATORY PARENT AND STUDENT: April 1 st , Drug Alcohol and Tobacco clearance, 5:30 p.m. at Douglas High School. (If your child is a returning athlete at Douglas High School he/she has already been cleared for the Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco presentation). TEAM EXPECTATIONS: PRACTICES/MEETINGS: · All scheduled meetings, games, and practices are mandatory, unless preapproved by the coach. · Full participation is required during the entire practice. · Proper clothing must be worn during practice at all times. CAMP: Camp attendance is mandatory. I'm looking into a USA cheer camp at Carson High School in Carson City. I believe this camp will take place the last week of July.
SUMMER CONDITIONING: During summer your child will need to condition and participate in cheer camp. FOOTBALL SEASON: Practice will be held 34 weeks before school starts in August. Actual days and times are to be announced. DO NOT schedule family vacations during the first weeks of practice as practices are mandatory for participation. Cheer is treated as a sport at DHS and is now a regulated activity, though not an official sport. Therefore, WORK WILL NOT be considered an excused absence for practice or games. Preseason and postseason games are part of the schedule for cheer just as they are for football! Game schedules will be handed out as soon as they are received by the coach from the Athletic Department. Practices will be held 14 times a week during the season or as needed. BASKETBALL SEASON: Again, just as preseason and postseason, games are considered part of the schedule for basketball players, it is also part of OUR schedule and we will have the privilege of cheering at ALL of these events. This will include part of Winter Break. Extra practices may also be held at this time to incorporate new cheers. Our cheer squad will participate in games played by both Boys and Girls Varsity basketball teams when at the same location during the season or for any pre and postseason games by either team. Practices will be held 13 times a week during the season or as needed. GAME DAYS: Members of the squads will NOT participate in a practice or a game if more than ½ a day of school is missed. Students will NOT participate if any class absences are unexcused for that day. The Athletic Department will do regular periodic grade checks, and members who are deficient will be ineligible to cheer. Members are to ride the bus to and from all away games and events in order to participate. Members may return home with a parent/guardian after signing a release form that is given back to the coach or adult in charge. Members are expected to be on time to all games in proper dress at least 45 minutes before the game starts. DUAL PARTICIPATION IN THE SAME SEASON: Outside participation on a competitive squad sponsored by allstars, gyms, schools, private organizations, etc., will not be permitted during the spirit season for any NIAA school member. However, practicing or taking classes are permitted. Due to liability issues, a DHS cheerleader can not be rostered as a Junior Coach in Pop Warner.
