The Kemppi welding transformer
operating instructions contained four main
sections: connecting to the power mains;
connecting welding pieces or thawing
leads; reading grading scales; and open
circuit voltages.
Treasure under the
table
Kemppikoneet Oy regional manager Kalevi
Väisänen was training new employees
at Kiinteistöpalvelu Savotek Oy in the use
of a MIG welding machine, when a treasure
stored under the welding table caught his
eye. In his 30-year career Väisänen had never
seen anything like it, but the ‘Kemppi’ name
on the side was indeed familiar.
The discovered welding transformer was
purchased in 1955 for use by Itä-Savon Osuusliike
Savonlinna maintenance personnel.
One of the rare features on the machine
was the ‘thawing function’ for water pipes.
”Previously, only gas welding was available
for repair work. We decided to get an electric
welding machine, which turned out
to be an excellent decision. The machine
had two welding ranges and a 1,000 ampere
‘thawing function’ for thawing out
frozen water pipes,” recalls Heikki Karvinen,
who worked as a repairman for Itä-Savon
Osuusliike.
As the decades rolled on, companies merged
and overlapping operations were rationalised.
The welding converter ended up with
Savotek Oy in 1997. It has been kept as a
back-up machine and, after being proven
unnecessary, was almost forgotten.
”The transformer is still completely operational,”
says Väisänen.
Kiinteistöpalvelu Savotek Oy donated the
welding transformer to the Kemppi museum.
The welding converter’s operating
instructions and a cover letter signed by the
company’s late founder, Industrial Counsellor
Martti Kemppi, were kept as valuable documents.
