UPDATE ON RELOCATION OF<br />

<strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> GENERAL OFFICE<br />

General Secretary-Treasurer Wood<br />

updated the Board on the status of<br />

the relocation of the General Office<br />

to 25th Street and Seventh Avenue in<br />

New York City. The Board was reminded<br />

that the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> has purchased<br />

two floors of which the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> will initially<br />

occupy approximately one and<br />

a half floors. The remaining one half<br />

is occupied by three tenants and this<br />

will bring revenue to the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> until<br />

their leases expire in 2014 at which<br />

time, the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> will make a determination<br />

if some or all of the office<br />

space being rented will be needed<br />

and one or more leases will be terminated<br />

or renewed.<br />

He advised that the closing on the<br />

purchase of the property was held<br />

on June 28, 2012. Demolition of the<br />

space is scheduled to begin in late<br />

July. Construction of the new office<br />

design will begin a few weeks after<br />

that and is expected to be completed<br />

by the end of the year with the move<br />

targeted for February 2013.<br />

The Board congratulated President<br />

Loeb and General Secretary-Treasurer<br />

Wood for their efforts to find appropriate<br />

space for the International’s<br />

General Office that will result in a<br />

worthy investment. It was noted that<br />

after 119 years, the International is finally<br />

the proud owner of a property<br />

in New York City.<br />

KRAVIS CENTER<br />

President Loeb updated the Board<br />

of the situation with the Kravis Center<br />

and its Board of Directors refusal<br />

to adhere to the agreement that was<br />

reached on January 20, 2012 and reported<br />

on at length at the 2012 Mid-<br />

Winter General Executive Board in<br />

Atlanta, Georgia. Soon after the bargaining<br />

concluded, the CEO of the<br />

building began reaching out to President<br />

Loeb in an attempt to modify<br />

the agreement. At the same time, the<br />

attorney for the Kravis Center and<br />

the General Counsel and In-House<br />

Counsel were working to finalize the<br />

language in the contract. Eventually<br />

the parties spoke and the Kravis CEO<br />

advised President Loeb that the Kravis<br />

Board had not approved portions of<br />

the agreement and she attempted to<br />

modify what was agreed to between<br />

the parties. That effort proved to be<br />

fruitless and President Loeb pledged<br />

his full support to <strong>Local</strong> 500’s long<br />

standing fight with the Kravis Center.<br />

Additional Board charges were filed<br />

for failure to execute and the NLRB<br />

has taken affidavits from President<br />

Loeb, General Counsel Short, and anticipates<br />

taking affidavits and requesting<br />

notes from In–House Counsel Dulaney<br />

and Vice President Lawlor.<br />

Subsequent to the NLRB charges, a<br />

member of the Kravis Board reached<br />

out to Vice President Lawlor. A question<br />

was posed as to whether the parties<br />

might reconvene and under what<br />

circumstances. A letter was forwarded<br />

to the Chairman of the Board of the<br />

Kravis Center reaffirming our belief<br />

that a deal had been consummated<br />

but leaving open the door to future<br />

dialogue between the Chairman and<br />

President Loeb. At least one conversation<br />

had occurred prior to the Board<br />

meeting and a follow-up conversation<br />

was scheduled for the following week.<br />

If the Kravis Chair is unwilling or unable<br />

to meet, the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> will ramp up<br />

its activities at the Center as the season<br />

starts up again in the fall.<br />

PRODUCER/<strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> BASIC<br />

AGREEMENT and AREA<br />

STANDARDS AGREEMENT<br />

Basic Agreement<br />

It was reported to the Board that<br />

the Memorandum of Agreement from<br />

the recently concluded Basic Agreement<br />

negotiations was unanimously<br />

ratified by the West Coast Studio <strong>Local</strong>s<br />

as required by the International<br />

Constitution.<br />

Area Standards Agreement<br />

It was reported that negotiations<br />

began in late March for the renewal<br />

of the Area Standards Agreement<br />

between the International and the<br />

AMPTP, however, after a few sessions,<br />

negotiations broke off and there are<br />

no dates scheduled to resume negotiations.<br />

It is estimated that the Area Standards<br />

Agreement now covers approximately<br />

8,000 members of the International<br />

across the United States.<br />

DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL<br />

CONVENTION<br />

Representative Dave Garretson<br />

reported on his assignment to work<br />

with long-time producer John Bradley,<br />

whose company is producing<br />

the Democratic National Convention<br />

which will be held the week of September<br />

3rd thru 6th, 2012 in Charlotte,<br />

North Carolina. Similar to the convention<br />

held in Denver in 2008, President<br />

Obama will give his acceptance<br />

speech outdoors in the Bank of America<br />

Stadium, which has significantly increased<br />

the amount of work available<br />

to Charlotte <strong>Local</strong> No. 322 and the<br />

surrounding <strong>IA</strong> local unions. Representative<br />

Garretson has been working<br />

with Business Agent Bo Howard of<br />

<strong>Local</strong> No. 322 to ensure that adequate<br />

manpower is available and equipped<br />

to crew the various events to be held<br />

during the Convention. Arrangements<br />

are being made for additional <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong><br />

qualified members from the region<br />

to supplement the <strong>Local</strong> 322 workers.<br />

The take-in for the Convention<br />

is scheduled to commence on August<br />

17th.<br />

It was also reported that Representative<br />

Garretson is coordinating his efforts<br />

with Vice Presidents Cahill and<br />

Lawlor, who have traveled to Charlotte<br />

several times in the past year meeting<br />

with representatives of <strong>Local</strong> 322 and<br />

Theatrical Resources. In addition, both<br />

Vice Presidents have attended meetings<br />

with representatives of the DNC<br />

to guarantee that all production work<br />

connected with the Convention is serviced<br />

under a contract with the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong><br />

and its affiliated <strong>Local</strong>s.<br />

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL<br />

CONVENTION<br />

Vice President Brian Lawlor reported<br />

that he and Division Director<br />

Gearns have been working with Tampa<br />

<strong>Local</strong> No. 321 regarding the Republican<br />

National Convention to be held<br />

in Tampa from August 27th thru August<br />

31st, 2012. Freeman Decorating is<br />

functioning as the General Contractor<br />

for this event and has a contract with<br />

<strong>Local</strong> 321 for that work in the Tampa<br />

Times Forum. Work is slated to begin<br />

in mid-July and will last approximately<br />

six weeks. Subsequently the production<br />

team will take over the building.<br />

Vice President Lawlor coordinated<br />

meetings between David Nash, a longtime<br />

<strong>IA</strong> member and consultant to the<br />

RNC, and the President and Business<br />

Agent of <strong>Local</strong> 321, Howard Stein<br />

and Paul Paleveda. Those discussions<br />

went very well and an agreement is in<br />

place for the production work as well.<br />

As with the DNC, all the work the <strong>IA</strong>-<br />

<strong>TSE</strong> traditionally services will be done<br />

under contract, supplemented by pink<br />

contract employees in the appropriate<br />

categories. This convention will<br />

be a great source of income for <strong>Local</strong><br />

321 members in what is traditionally a<br />

slower season in Florida, as well as for<br />

members from the surrounding local<br />

unions.<br />

GOLF CHANNEL<br />

Broadcast Division Director Sandra<br />

England reported on current organizing<br />

efforts of the Division including<br />

an election petition with the National<br />

Labor Relations Board that is being<br />

filed to represent employees working<br />

for the Golf Channel. The <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> has<br />

overwhelming support from the workers<br />

on this drive.<br />

The Division has seen a dramatic<br />

increase in requests from unrepresented<br />

sports broadcast workers seeking<br />

help from the <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> for representation<br />

and we will continue to aggressively<br />

organize in this area.<br />
