Discipleship
Pastor’s Page
A disciple is a learner, an apprentice. A disciple is someone who places him
or herself in a submissive relationship to a teacher or mentor. Jesus called
people to follow him—people who became his lifelong disciples. Jesus’ disciples
are people who are serious about becoming like their Savior and Lord.
Their lives are centered around and focused upon Jesus. You and I are richly
blessed to have been the recipients of the call of Jesus upon our lives—a
call to become his lifelong disciples.
I write about this because right now, behind the scenes, prayers and plans
and work and dreams are occurring, the focus of which is to make serious
discipleship a central feature of the Loma Linda University Church. This is
not to say that we haven’t been serious about it before now. It is to say that
we are in the process of becoming much more intentional and focused about
it. In fact, what has become clear to the pastoral staff and the lay leaders
who are involved in this process is that it will require a cultural shift. You will
hear much more about it in future months and years, but maybe I can summarize
that shift right now by saying that the focus will move from membership
to discipleship; from going to church to being the church; from being a
spectator to being a participant. I can’t tell you how joyful I feel as I ponder
the possibilities—in Christ—for our church as we continue to move in this
direction. Much more to follow…

From Hear to Do: The
Righteous Foundation

Derek Yee-Hsiang Char, a junior, along
with his sister, Lindsey Yee-Ching Char, a
freshman, attend Woodcrest Christian High
School in Riverside, CA. They both play
the violin and are members of the Claremont
Young Musicians Orchestra. Their
family has been attending LLUC since
2000. We are happy to welcome these two
young people into membership.
Sophal Keo and Theany Sieng are
pleased tody to bring their first
child, Andy Keo, for dedication
today. Sophal is a teacher in San
Bernardino and theany is a phot
assistant in Redlands.
Galyna Chambi comes for baptism after
attending LLUC for five years. She is
an office assistant in a medical office in
Oceanside, CA. It is a joy to have Galyna
join our church family.
We welcome Natalia Ashley into church membership as she is baptized
privately after the second service on March 29. Natalia has been attending
LLUC since 1996. She currently works as a physical therapist at Loma
Linda University Medical Center.

Throughout history, singleness has been regarded as a season through
which one will pass in accordance with the Church’s and the larger
community’s timetable. How do Christian singles find wholeness in the
family of God when various cultures do not count one as a whole
number
All humans, whether single or coupled, desire healthy connections in
personal, family, social, professional, and spiritual relationships. What
can we learn from research on the subject of relational health and
singleness that could improve our ability to connect in all contexts
This seminar is for anybody interested in understanding relationships,
whether single or married. It offers perspectives on the individual in
the community that will be of benefit to all.

Hazel Lashier died on March 28.
She is survived by her daughter, Pat
Horsman, and sons, Harvey, Robert,
and Donald. Private memorial service
will be held at a later date.
Lois Nelson-Kellar died on April
1. She is survived by her daughters,
Dee Hart, Lynnette Parker, Francene
Duerksen, and Corene Gildersleeve;
and sons, Elvert Nelson and Rendon
Nelson. Her service will be held today,
April 12, at 3:00 p.m. in the Campus
Chapel.
Marjorie Ziprick died on April 1.
She is survived by two brothers,
Johnny and Nancy Affeldt, and Robert
and JoAnn Affeldt; one sister, Betty
Farley; and one sister-in-law, Lottie
Ziprick; her four children, Douglas and
KerrAnne Ziprick, Robert and Shari
Ziprick, Jean and Guy Guilfoy, and
William and Sally Ziprick; 13 grandchildren,
and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations
to LLUC Organ Fund or the LLU
Children’s Hospital. Her service will
be tomorrow, April 13, at 7:00 p.m. in
the Sanctuary.
Stephanie Pesh died on March 29.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle,
and son, Shawn. Her service will be
