extensions to integrate suburban areas,
especially the city’s northwest. The end
result, Smitherman says, will be that GTA
residents will be able to travel anywhere
across the GTA conveniently by transit —
a far cry from the situation today.
Other planks in Smitherman’s
campaign platform of interest to builders
include investments in the revitalization
of city parks, improved and new sports
and recreation facilities (part and parcel
of the work being done for the Pan Am
Games), and increasing the number of
indoor playgrounds.
Leslie Woo reminded attendees of the transit investment
deficit Toronto still suffers from. That and the fact that
the GTA continues to grow at a rapid pace means that
projects like the Metrolinx “Big Move” transit plan – $50
billion to be invested over 25 years – will be delivering
construction opportunities long into the future
