The true value, however, is realized by sharing solutions that have worked for them,” says Baker. Tackling small business challenges head-on will strengthen the value proposition delivered to TCA members, which in turn will help grow the association’s membership base. It will boost the TCA’s capacity to help members cope with the many hurdles they face by allowing them to apply the very tangible skills and knowledge provided by the broad range of construction professionals that will sit on the committee. Also, and perhaps most importantly, this tangible business benefit will be delivered at no cost. For smaller companies trying to shepherd their organizations through a rocky market, this represents a much-appreciated complimentary resource. Topics for the meetings will vary in scope and subject matter, based first and foremost on relevance. Ideas already being floated include business improvement and growth concepts, strategic business planning, performance indicators, business transition planning, accounting and cost-control systems, to name a few. For those concerned about confidentiality and competition, Baker stresses this shouldn’t pose a concern. In many cases businesses are not direct competitors, and if they are, their owners can be guarded in the knowledge they share. “One business may be in the not-for-profit sector, and the other in the housing industry, so there is not a conflict of interest or a competitive issue,” points out Baker. “And if there is, they may choose not to share certain things. But what’s wrong with sharing best practices in human resources or employee benefits Or insurance tips, accounting systems, or remuneration to the CEO Everyone can benefit from that type of exchange.” Clearly, challenges specific and unique to the construction industry are best suited for discussion in a forum of like-minded professionals. By bringing together builders, contractors and suppliers actively working in construction, industry-specific challenges can be fully assessed, dissected and resolved — whether it’s looking at how to attract young people to the profession, or dealing with the bonding industry, or putting together the best construction contract. Only a group of skilled construction professionals can explore these and other industry-specific topics to their full extent. On a final note, aside from the educational benefit of joining the committee, its volunteers will also be doing something for the good of the TCA and its members. This represents an added incentive to get on board and help out. “As a member of an association, you want to take part in it,” says Baker. “That is why members join an association . . . to help make it strong, and to help it benefit the industry.
