The BBC Proms
An Accolade to Brian Close
BBC Proms 2009
Friday 17th July – Saturday 12th September
The 115th season of the BBC Proms continues to bring the world’s best classical
music to increasingly wide audiences, and remains one of the best value-for-money
experiences anywhere. This year, there are more concerts than ever before with 76
in the Royal Albert Hall, 19 Proms Chamber Music recitals at Cadogan Hall, and five
BBC Proms in the Park events around the country on the Last Night; this is 12 more
than last year.
2 ASPIRE
Discover The World through
The Eyes Of The Journey Man
Enjoy a unique and inspiring experience, marvel at tales from
around the world and explore your own imagination with the help
of the Journey Man.
The Journey Man, constructed from the imagination of Johnny Gillett, is a worldtravelled
mime artist, storyteller, drama teacher and youth worker. Having spent
many years exploring different countries and cultures, Johnny
made his home in Cheshire two years ago where he set about
transforming his experiences into drama workshops and storytelling
programmes that children of all ages can enjoy.
The verbal and visual practitioner, who has become a big hit in
schools across the country, tailors workshops and programmes
to coincide with children’s Core Learning, covering a whole host
of cultures and time periods. The Journey Man is able to tell
stories relating to Aboriginal Australia, the Caribbean, Japan
and New Zealand to name but a few, whilst drama workshops can be tailored
around subjects such as Aztecs, Vikings and Romans. The workshops encourage
children to explore different angles of stories, create their own stories and characters
using various techniques, as well as performing their creations.
Johnny says: “Children always react really positively to the experience. I think part
of that is because everyone loves a good story and also because they get to be
part of that story, exploring ideas and the way characters act, as well as putting
forward their own ideas. The workshops are interactive, allowing children the
opportunity to draw on their own imagination. It also encourages them to become
good listeners.”
With 20 years teaching experience, Johnny has the skills training to adapt to
teaching different children. Working as a solo artist also allows him the flexibility to
adapt to different time scales and school routines, and a range of workshops can
easily be created and adapted for children aged three to 18.
CHAMPIONS (UK) PLC
Presents an
Accolade to
Brian Close
CBE by Laura Merry
As you are well aware, Aspire like to bring
you a comprehensive guide to what’s
happening across Leicestershire and
Northamptonshire; last week, Aspire’s
home city was graced by the presence
of numerous stars, who all gathered at
The Walker’s Stadium, to honour the
career of Brian Close CBE, the youngest
man ever to play Test cricket for England,
aged just 18-years-old.
As the Twenty20 cricket World Cup finals
are this weekend, and with the Ashes
just around the corner, it seemed only
fitting that Aspire cover this amazing
event…
As I said before, Brian Close was the
youngest man to ever play Test cricket
for England at just 18-years old; he went
on to play in 22 Test matches after that
first against New Zealand in 1949. He
actually captained the Test side seven
times, winning six and drawing once.
Born in Rawdon, near Leeds, Brian
played for Yorkshire, captaining them to
four county championship titles; he later
went on to captain Somerset where he
is widely credited with turning Somerset
into a hard-playing team that helped
mould Viv Richards and Ian Botham into
the cricketing greats we know and love.
So, with my glad rags on and my cricketloving
fiancée in tow, I arrived at the
Walker’s Stadium on Wednesday June
10th excited and looking forward to not
only a great night, but also to great food
and great conversation; and I wasn’t
disappointed.
Although I didn’t actually get to talk to
the man himself, I did stand next to
Darren Gough, England’s ‘Man of the
Series’ against West Indies and Sri
Lanka in 2000/01 and winner of ‘Strictly
Come Dancing’ in 2005, and I also
heard the beautiful tones of emerging
tenor Henry Olonga, the first black man
to play cricket at International level for
Zimbabwe, as he sang for an awe-struck
audience.
Whilst everyone was tucking into their
delicious three-course dinner, numerous
fundraising activities took place to raise
money for Rainbows, activities such
as stand-up bingo, football frenzy and
a raffle (which I wasn’t lucky enough
to win)! Also, throughout the night,
guests could bid on a range of signed
memorabilia in a silent auction (one of
which my fiancée did win)!
The main attractions of the night were,
firstly, Brian Close picking his World 11
from the numerous talented cricketers
he had the pleasure of playing with,
or against, throughout his amazing
career. Secondly, a traditional auction
of some of the most amazing sporting
memorabilia myself, and auctionmaster
Willie Thorne, had ever seen;
including a 1966 World Cup Legends
image, personally signed by 10 of the
winning 11 England players – which
was purchased by a businessman on my
table (“1966 is my year,” he said).
Next, the audience were treated to
stories and songs from Henry Olonga;
the highlight of which has to be his
rendition of Nessun Dorma! Finally,
Darren Gough took part in a probing
question and answer session with Geoff
Miller, a member of the ECB Test cricket
selection committee. Here, Darren
shared the many high and low points of
his career, including his Ashes hat trick
against Australia in January 1999, which
his family (who were travelling with him)
actually missed, as well as a few ‘risky’
anecdotes (unsuitable for publication
I’m afraid)!
Overall, everyone I spoke to had a great
night and a lot of money was raised for
a great cause – Rainbows. This purposebuilt
children’s hospice opened its doors
in 1994 and is dedicated to meeting
the needs of children and young people
from the East Midlands who come to the
hospice, all of whom are affected by lifelimiting
and life-threatening conditions.
Based in Loughborough, the charity has
to raise £2.8 million each year simply to
keep the eight-bed hospice operating.
they have in store for you! The show’s style gurus will be randomly
solutions they can use at home.
“10YY has always been popular so I'm thrilled our award winning show
will now be accessible to so many more people with the launch of an
exciting live event. We get thousands of letters from fans asking to get
involved in the TV series and now they can be a part of the 10 Years
Younger Live show. They'll be able to meet our Experts face to face and
get all the very latest on fashion, hair and make-up. Plus there will be the
excitement of live transformations and catwalk shows as we makeover
people right before their eyes. It'll undoubtedly be a fantastic experience
and for some maybe even life changing,” Andrew Anderson, Executive
Producer of 10 Years Younger said.
3rd - 5th July
Myleene's top 5 tips
for looking good
on the go
* Make sure your hair is clean and fresh
looking. Other than your face, it's the first
thing people notice! If you don't have time
to wash it, then pull it back or wear a hat.
I've learnt lots of tips to looking after my
hair, including choosing the correct product
tailored to my hair type...that way you get
the best results rather than picking up any
old bottle and not letting it enhance your
fabulous locks!!
* Mascara opens up your eyes and is great
especially for when you're feeling exhausted.
It took me a long time to learn that you don't
have to necessarily plaster your face in war
paint (I used to wear it like a mask!). But it is
true; when it comes to make up, less really is
more...plus who doesn't want that extra time
in bed!
* Again, if you're not feeling too great, tired
or just a little flat, a white shirt acts as an
LOOK GOOD
FEEL GREAT
We provide Non-Invasive Cosmetic
Laser Treatments, Dermal Fillers, Muscle
Relaxant Injections & Chemical Peels.
automatic light reflector. When I'm
on a photo shoot, there is usually
a reflective sheet held under my
chin or face to brighten up the
image. Wearing a white or light
top does exactly the same job and
is a canny trick employed by nearly
every celebrity I know when they're
having an 'off day'!
* Eight hour cream or even
Vaseline/petroleum jelly is a great
beauty product to keep in your
handbag. Not only can you apply
it as a lip gloss, it can be used to
give shine to cheeks, eye lids and
any where else you might fancy adding a
slight light glow (I rub it on my shoulders and
neck line too if I'm going out).
* I always keep a pair of flat shoes in my
handbag or in the back of Ava's pram so if
I'm running out somewhere, I don't have to
struggle in my heels all day. For me, comfort
comes first but not necessarily at the cost of
style!
Celebrating Dad’s Special Day
21st June By Sarah Ross
It’s that time of year again to celebrate dad’s special day and with this year’s
celebration falling on 21st June, it means you’ve only got a few days to get that
gift ready. When it comes to letting someone know how much you care, it’s not how
much you spend, it’s the thought that counts. So, Aspire have come up with a few
Father’s Day ideas to suit every taste and every budget...
The History of Father’s Day
The origins of Father’s Day date back to the early 1900s, with the very first event
being held in America on 5th July 1908. The event was the creation of Sonora
Smart Dodd, who was raised by her father after the early death of her mother.
Sonora wanted to show her father how special he was to her and originally wanted
the event to coincide with her father’s birthday on June 5th. Due to delays in the
arrangements, the event could not go ahead until the third Sunday of June and so
the first official celebration was held on 19th June, 1910
(www.fathersdaycelebration.com).
Although Father’s Day is celebrated across the globe, the date of the event varies
from country to country. However, the most popular day seems to be the third
Sunday of June, which is when we celebrate Father’s Day here in Britain.
Freebies...
If you’re strapped for cash this Father’s
Day but still want to treat your dad
to something special, there are many
ways you can show how much you care
without having to spend a penny. Instead
of giving your dad a gift this year, why
not do something to help make his life a
little easier.
• Volunteer to wash the car - by offering
to do his usual Sunday chores for him, dad
can sit back and enjoy himself.
• Cook him breakfast - stock the fridge up
with eggs and bacon so you can give dad
the ultimate treat, breakfast in bed!
• Let him watch sport on the television
- the battle of the remote is probably
the biggest cause of arguments in the
family home, so why not give dad a break
by letting him watch all his favourite
programmes.
• IOU - make your dad some vouchers to
On a
Budget...
use on Father’s Day or for the summer
holidays. You could include things like car
washing, a free babysitting service, offer to
caddy for him when he plays golf or even
polishing his shoes.
• Have a ‘yes dad’ day - it’s probably every
father’s dream to have a day where his
kids don’t answer back, so make his day by
fulfilling his every request and pandering
to every whim.
• Make a homemade card - forget buying
expensive cards and opt for the homemade
variety. You could draw a picture of your
dad or use a family photograph to make a
special keepsake for dad.
• Write a poem - you don’t need an
expensive card to let dad know how special
he is, write your own verse and tell him
how much you appreciate him.
• Make a mix CD - collect all his favourite
songs together and put them onto one
handy disc.
For those who want to treat their dad to
a gift but don’t want to spend a fortune,
you can pick up some great gifts for just
a few pounds.
• Tickets - why not take your dad out for
the day and buy him tickets for a tour of his
favourite sports stadium, such as Wembley
or Old Trafford, or even take him to see his
favourite band.
• Magazine subscription - treat your dad
to a year’s subscription of his favourite
magazine.
• Sweet treats - treat him to a big bar of
his favourite chocolate or even bake him
a cake.
• Create a personalised gift - find your
favourite photo of you and your dad and get
the image put on a mouse mat, key ring,
mug or canvas.
• Vouchers - let your dad treat himself with
vouchers for clothes, music, games or even
a meal out.
Splash the Cash...
If money’s no object this Father’s Day then why not
treat dad to something really unique - an experience
gift.
• Driving experience - let dad enjoy a drive like no other
around one of Britain’s best race tracks in a Ferrari,
Lamborghini, Aston Martin or even a monster truck.
• Extreme sports experience - test your dad’s nerves with
a day spent sphereing, indoor skydiving or experiencing
some extreme watersports.
Business At Weston Hall Hotel
Weston Hall Hotel Conference & Banqueting Centre
is a stunning 16th Century, Grade II listed, three-star
accommodation, ideal for those boring but essential
business meetings, staff training and conferences.
Surrounded by tranquil, rural settings, yet just
minutes from the motorway network, Weston Hall
has been functioning as a hotel for the past 15
years, regularly hosting conferences, corporate
events, banquets and weddings.
Whether your business is a global conglomerate, an
international empire, a nationwide enterprise, a regional
organisation or a single-person operation, the factors
that lead to success remain the same.
The most important factor in having
a successful business is reputation,
which is gained through marketing
campaigns, advertising and, most
importantly, word-of-mouth and customer
recommendations. SO, if you want to be
known as the best in your field, excellent
customer service is a MUST!
Secondly, many customers are now
looking at how businesses approach to
corporate social responsibility (CSR).
If quality and value are equal then a
customer is likely to opt for the company
they feel is most socially responsible,
which basically means the company that
is concerned with their social and moral
obligations, not just their profits. With
climate change and carbon footprints
hot on everybody’s lips at the moment,
customers are obviously keen to support
a company who strives to give something
back. An increasing number of companies
are employing someone to handle their
Corporate Social Responsibility in order
to lead the way for others to follow. But
whether CSR is here to stay or just another
fad, a good reputation, loyal customer
base and an ability to move with the times
will ensure your business has a long and
successful life.
Moving house is said to be one of the
most stressful events you will experience
in your life, so why not make your move
a little more manageable with help from
Heather Philip Licensed Conveyancing.
Promising a friendly and personal service,
Heather Philip is a residential property
lawyer, qualified to cover all legal aspects
of buying and selling homes.
Having worked hard over a number of
years to gain the relevant qualifications,
when Heather found herself being made
redundant six months ago she decided
to establish her own business. She says:
“I am able to cover all aspects of legal
work for anyone looking to buy, sell or
remortgage property, just as a Solicitor
would.”
Covering Syston and the surrounding
areas, Heather’s business offers a real
personal and friendly service, as her
customers deal with her direct. She adds:
“As I work for myself, it means I am much
With all the doom and gloom around
at the moment, why not boost morale
amongst your employees by organising a
corporate activity day. From rafting, clay
pigeon shooting, go-carting and crazy
golf to a spa day, craft classes and even
a casino evening, there is an event out
there sure to give your team a boost! By
boosting the morale of your staff you will
be rewarded with their hard work, extra
effort and even loyalty.
Another way to give you staff a boost, as
well as a day, or week, out of the office, is
with a conference. Conferences can vary
in size, from small meetings with a hand
full of people to much large gatherings
that may include hundreds of people. They
can also take place almost anywhere.
The location of your conference obviously
depends on the number of people who
will be attending. Some companies have
their own small meeting rooms within
their office that can be used for small
conferences, but a large conference with
many attendees will usually take place in a
much larger venue.
Remember, a happy business is a
successful business!
more flexible than other services. I don’t
work a traditional set pattern and so I’m
clients to check the progress of their move
on the internet from the comfort of their
a popular facility as it means customers
do not have to contact Heather directly
convenient device is the automatic text
Painted To Perfection!
There are numerous ways to give your home a bit of a facelift, some of which cost
much more than others. If you’ve recently given your bedroom, living room, or
even your loft conversion a lick of paint, Aspire have found the perfect finishing
touch – a painting or drawing by Paul Castle, previous winner of our Certificate of
Recognition for Quality Products.
Paul Castle is an independent artist, illustrator and picture
framer with over 30 years experience in established business
and specialist in individual one-off requests to a high quality
finish.
After leaving school at 15, Paul Castle attended the Luton
School of Art to indulge his passion, eventually leaving and
beginning his career as a technical illustrator. Paul studied for
five years as part of a City and Guilds course while he was
working. Paul recalls always having a passion for drawing and
being known amongst his teachers and classmates as the boy
who ‘draws houses in the sky’ thanks to his early ability to use
perspective. Paul’s career took a different path when he was
made redundant in the 1970’s. He then decided to combine
his skills as a technical illustrator with his skills in picture
framing and restorations.
Paul told Aspire: “As a child and into my teenage years, I
was lucky enough to receive tutelage from the late Winton
Aldridge, who was a protégé of Edward Wesson; one of
Britain’s most outstanding 20th century watercolourists –
Winton was an artist I greatly admired. He taught me how to
loosen up with my art and diversify from the technical drawing
I was more proficient in. After he passed away, I actually
framed around 500 of his pictures on the request of his
family. Framing some things can be a challenge and I think it
gives one a thrill to turn someone’s masterpiece or certificate
into an added piece of furniture for their home.” The influence
of Winton Aldridge can be seen in some of Paul’s stunning
paintings of buildings and street scenes.
Paul was also lucky enough to work with James Allington
(producer of cut-away perspective drawings for the motor
industry) who helped him master pen and ink techniques.
Paul told Aspire: “With the all the new technology involving
computers in drawing and art these kind of techniques are
in danger of becoming lost. It is a stunning way to draw
and really captures the atmosphere of the subject. They are
particularly good for personal calendars, Christmas cards,
brochures or stationary.”
Senior Sales Executive, Barbara Stone, explained why she
nominated Paul for our prestigious Certificate of Recognition
for Quality Products: “Paul has an unrivalled wealth of
experience when it comes to painting, drawing and even
framing. He kindly sent me some samples of his work and I
was so impressed with the quality, not only of the materials,
but also of the standard of his work that I simply had to
nominate him for a Certificate of Recognition – I’m thrilled
he won!”
Paul’s restoration work includes restoring old photographs of
towns and villages, which can be sourced and reproduced.
Paul also uses the latest technology to enhance and repair
prints of family, relatives and friends to their former condition,
in black and white, sepia, or colour. Although each job is
individual, Paul has had past success in restoring water/fire
damaged images.
Finally, Paul said: “I have the knowledge and experience
to cope with any size job and any requirements. I’ve been
established in the Hertfordshire area for a long time now
so I’m quite well known. My business is steadily surviving
the recession, but like any business, I have noticed a fall in
customers; but I’m confident I can survive and continue to
cater for your framing and image restoration needs for many
years to come.”
So, if you’re looking for the perfect focal point for your newly decorated home, why
not give Paul Castle a call and ask him to paint you a beautiful painting – don’t forget
to tell him Aspire sent you!
Love Our Pets
A Pet is
for Life...
Faced with rising living costs, shorter working hours
and unemployment, many families are now feeling
unable to provide for their pets, as they struggle to
raise enough funds for food and veterinary bills.
Many welfare charities, including the RSCPCA, are
now at bursting point and have reported a sharp
increase in the number of pets being abandoned.
Owning a pet can be expensive at the best of times,
but in times of financial hardship, it can be an ongoing
struggle to provide for all their needs. If you really want
to purchase a new pet right now, make sure you do your
homework and understand the huge commitment you are
taking on.
The benefits of owning a pet are enormous, as they can
help to keep you happy and healthy. In fact, research
has shown that pet owners are much healthier than those
who don’t own an animal. According to the Pet Health
Council, studies have shown that those who own a pet
The Retirement Show
Over The Hill
Not Likely!
Many years ago, getting to the age of 50 meant it
was all downhill and the only thing you had to look
forward to was a free bus pass. Not anymore – 50
is the new 21! Thanks to the 1950’s post-war baby
boom, a large proportion of the population, aged 43
to 57, are looking forward to the kind of retirement
previous generations could only dream of.
Aspire have come up with a few ways that you can truly
make the most of your twilight years…
• Downsize - By trading in your four-bed semi for a twobed
bungalow, you can free up extra money to allow you
to truly enjoy your retirement.
• Buy a park home - An excellent alternative to a bricks
and mortar home. Living in a secure environment,
surrounded by like-minded people, is the perfect way to
spend your prime years.
• Take plenty of holidays - As you no longer have
the restraints of holidaying during the school summer
break, you can truly appreciate your crowd-free chosen
destination.
• Learn a craft - From cross-stitch to candle-making,
creative crafts can be enjoyed on a sunny day, in the
garden, or on a rainy day, in the kitchen.
• Write a novel - Let your imagination
run wild and live the life you always
dreamt of, or simply document your real
life story.
• Research your family tree - By
discovering where you came from, you
can pass your findings onto the next
generation. You may even discover long
lost relatives you didn’t know you had.
Taking place three times each year
at different venues, The Retirement
Show - sponsored by Prudential -
returns to London this July. Open from
10am - 5pm, The Retirement Show
includes many activities for visitors to try,
including all-day dancing sessions, T'ai
chi and yoga.
The Retirement Show showcases a host
of exhibitors of interest to retired and
semi-retired people, including activity
holidays, property companies, charities,
the U3A, insurers and many others.
The London Retirement Show will take
place on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th
July at Olympia's Grand Hall. Visitors
are sure to enjoy the many features
and activities on offer - all of them free
- while the informative seminars and
discussion panels will provide answers
to visitors' questions. The show features
over 100 exhibitors, offering a huge
variety of products and services for
retirees. Free pre-registration is now
open. For more information, please visit
Afon Lodge
Enjoy the Beauty of
With stunning views of the surrounding countryside and so many
great places to visit, you’ll never want to leave this rural retreat.
Afon Lodge are offering you the fantastic opportunity to invest in
your future holidays and that’s why Aspire have awarded owner
can holiday all year round or whenever you just fancy a change
of scene. Now really is the best time to invest in a holiday home,
as you can put your well-earned money towards something you
can enjoy time after time. There are currently 70 static caravans
on the caravan park, which has been given a three-star award
by the Welsh Tourist Board. Mainly six-berth, with lounge and
dining area, fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom and electric/television
hook-up, the caravans are set on spacious hard-standing or
grass pitches. There’s also an onsite laundrette, which will come
in handy for those longer holidays. Second-hand prices start from
£6000 and new caravans are also available.
Afon Lodge is an award-winning caravan park, having been
presented with an impressive David Bellamy Gold Conservation
Award. These prestigious awards are presented only to holiday
parks that are committed to preserving and enhancing the natural
environment of the wildlife that inhabit them, actively encouraging
recycling and respect for the countryside.
This caravan park welcomes children and pets, and the surrounding
area provides plenty of places to keep kids entertained. The
nearest sandy beaches are just seven miles away and the Pembrokeshire
Coast National Park, home to puffins, seals and dolphins,
is perfect for wildlife spotting.
Afon Park is ideally situated for exploring the whole of west Wales
On receiving the Certificate of Recognition, Bill says: “I’m both
surprised and pleased to have been awarded this Certificate from
Aspire. Afon Lodge was an overgrown and rundown caravan park
when I arrived here ten years ago. I have worked hard to bring
it back to its former glory and provide a welcoming place for
families to holiday, and this Certificate is recognition of all that
hard work.”
Senior Sales Executive, Emily Davison, says: “Afon Lodge Caravan
young children or a retired couple looking for a peaceful break.
This is a great time to invest in a holiday home and you won’t find
better value or a better place to holiday year after year, than Afon
Lodge. I nominated this caravan park for the Certificate because
the area of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire also offer so
much to see and do, meaning every holiday here will be different. I
think this would be a great investment opportunity for anyone.”
The park is open from March 1st until 9th January, allowing you
Moor Estate to a natural burial site was
instigated by former farmer's wife, Wendy
Pratt, she says: “Tarn Moor is not just a
beautiful location for burial. The impression
of a Woodland burial has often been that
‘you have to be in a cardboard box and
have a tree planted’. At Tarn Moor we
pride ourselves on ‘choice’, whether it be
location, casket, ceremony or involvement.
So many people leave a funeral with us
and say ‘that was lovely’. There certainly is
such a thing as a ‘A Good Funeral’.”
Only those familiar with Tarn Moor would
know of its purpose as a natural burial site.
There are no grave stones dominating the
skyline, just a few strategically planted oak
trees. The burials underground are located
by microchip. Wendy believes an increase
in environmental awareness has made
people more conscious about green burials.
She explains: “We are not just a burial
ground that happens to plant trees, but
have a long term Woodland management
scheme in place, to produce a lovely place
for families to visit for many generations
to come.”
The aim is to produce a long-term,
natural woodland, and as such, it will
be maintained as woodland and not a
cemetery. The site is grazed with sheep so
it is maintained naturally.
Since opening, there have been hundreds
of burials there and many people have
chosen their burial plot. It is not just for
Skipton people; having walked around
the area, one fell walker who didn't live
in the area chose Tarn Moor as his final
resting place. Many people who visit are
captivated by the beauty of the woodland
and want to be buried there, while others
simply enjoy walking there and taking in
the landscape.
Those who want a traditional church
funeral can come to Tarn Moor for the
committal and there are many more options
to explore. Traditional wood coffins are
allowed, but without adornments such as
brass handles and plaques which are not
bio-degradable. Bamboo and wicker
coffins and even shrouds have become
popular for those conscious of saving the
planet, even after death.
Tarn Moor also recognise the special
bond between pet and owner, and are
dedicated to offering bereaved owners a
place to grieve quietly for their beloved
companions, with both burials and the
scattering of ashes being welcome. Tarn
Moor also offers a quiet and unique area
for owners who wish to be buried alongside
their much loved animals, which has become
increasingly popular.
The growth in clients pre-booking their
plots is something Wendy is becoming more
conscious of: "More and more people are
making forward plans. They are booking
their plots and planning their arrangements.
I believe it is a very brave thing to discuss
and organise, but pre-planning your own
funeral arrangements is very wise and
people do feel comforted to know that they
have done it."
Recognising the difference Tarn Moor
Memorial and Woodland has made, Aspire
has decided to award the company a
Certificate of Recognition for Coping with
Bereavement. Wendy says: “We are very
proud to being doing what we’re doing
here at Tarn Moor and we’re very pleased
to have all our efforts recognised. Our
aim has always been to offer a different
and personal choice, and we believe the
ambiance of Tarn Moor helps to take away
the harshness of death. We are pleased
to able to encourage people to discuss
their wishes after death and this certificate
acknowledges all the hard work we have
done.”
Star Consulting
A Shining Star…
STAR
Consulting
People use care providers for many
different reasons and to meet many
different needs; some people need parttime
care just to get over a difficult patch
while others may need care for their
entire lives. If you are a care provider
looking to recruit the services of an
innovative, flexible, and friendly training
company, look no further than STAR
Consulting, winners of Aspire’s Certificate
of Recognition for Professional Training
Services...
Established five years ago, STAR Consulting provides
tailor-made training for all health and social care sector
organisations. Founder and Director of STAR Consulting,
Peter Clark, told Aspire: “I established STAR Consulting
after numerous changes in social care legislation, towards
personalisation and supported living and away from
registered care. I knew that lots of people within the care
industry would need training, or even re-training, in these
areas in order to comply with the new legislation, so STAR
Consulting was born.”
Peter and his two colleagues provide unrivalled training and
consultancy in a number of areas, including:
• Person-centred Planning - based around the principles of
inclusion and the social model of disability, it ensures the
focus person is central and in control
• Risk Assessments - the determination of quantitative or
qualitative value of risk in relation to a situation/recognised
threat
• Health & Safety - useful information on day to day health
and safety challenges
• Food Hygiene - affecting all food businesses, Food Hygiene
legislation ensures healthy and safe food is served
• Dealing with various Disabilities - such as autistic spectrum
disorders, epilepsy, and bi-polar
• Communication
• Workforce Training Assessments
• Equality and Diversity
• And More…
Peter added: “We can do anything clients want us to
do, whether that be training in policies and procedures
for supported living of disabled people, or Annual
Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) Consultancy and
Management Consultancy. Although most of our clients
are within Yorkshire, we are happy to travel in order to
cater to clients needs. Between the three of us, we have
worked in every element of learning disability services,
registered care, supported living, employment, day care and
hospital in-patient, so we have the relevant experience, and
qualifications, to get your care staff up to scratch.”
Using training consultants, like STAR Consulting, enables you
and your company to stay on top of your game. Technology
and medical advancements are changing constantly, so
employing the expertise of training consultants will enable
you to train staff as and when the industry changes, without
having the expense of training somebody who will then train
everybody else – you can train everyone you need to in one
go and avoid unnecessary costs i.e. days off, training, man
hours etc.
Using a training consultant allows you to delegate certain
roles to experienced and knowledgeable members of staff in
order to make your care business run as smoothly as possible,
and be the best it can be.
Not only that but the professional assistance and extra
knowledge of training consultants can push your business
forward and enable you to provide the best care and to help
develop your care staff, no matter what your care sector.
It’s also handy to have an independent view of your care
business, in case there are areas in which you can not only
increase the quality of care you provide, but also increase
the financial aspects, as a care business is still a business
that needs to be profitable, especially during the current
economic downturn.
Located in Sheffield, STAR Consulting believe that every
delegate from every care setting has different training needs,
which is why many of their training solutions are specifically
designed for individuals; whether you need management
training or assessor qualifications, STAR Consulting can help
you meet both organisational and individual needs.
Peter and his colleagues are trained to the highest standards,
with Peter trained to NVQ level 5 and MCI level 2, as well
as having a CQSW and being a member of The Institute of
Leadership and Management, so you can rest assured that
your employees will be in safe and knowledgeable hands.
On receiving our Certificate of Recognition for Professional
Training Services, Peter said: “Thank you Aspire; this official
recognition means so much to us as not only do we have
the necessary qualifications, but we also boast on the job
experience. We pass on our knowledge in a practical way,
from actual experience, rather than in a theoretical way, from
books.”
Senior Sales Executive, Elaine Ellis, added: “I nominated STAR
Consulting for our Certificate of Recognition as I feel they
offer something no-one else does. They aren’t just trained
to pass on knowledge, they’ve actually been in some of the
situations used when training so they can pass on first-hand
experience, and that’s priceless. I’m so pleased that they’ve
won this Certificate and I hope they go on to be increasingly
successful in years to come.”
The CLA Game Fair
As we look forward to the summer, we start
to plan how we are going to spend it and,
indeed, how we will entertain the children
throughout the holidays. So, what better
than a day celebrating the very best of British
heritage This July, the greatest countryside
show displaying all aspects of rural Britain -
traditional and new - returns to our region after
four years.
The CLA Game Fair will be held at Belvoir
Castle on Friday 24th - Sunday 26th July
attracting the world’s largest gathering of
country sports personalities, professionals
and enthusiasts from throughout the UK and
abroad. It is here that visitors will find the most
comprehensive representation of their favourite
country pursuits, as well as the most fabulous
displays of every aspect of the countryside.
Shooting, fishing, gundogs and falconry are at
the core of The Game Fair with displays, worldclass
championships, competitions, tuition, and
have-a-go activities to be found throughout the
500 acre site.
However, not only is The CLA Game Fair the
annual gathering and eagerly enjoyed social
occasion for enthusiasts of country sports, it
is also a three-day showcase for the whole
of the countryside enjoyed by families from
all walks of life looking for a fabulous day’s
entertainment away from the commercial
entertainment of Fun Fairs and Theme Parks.
At The Game Fair, visitors will find a host of
features which will appeal to all members of
the family. The show offers the opportunity to
have a go, under expert guidance, at many of
the shooting and fishing disciplines, handson
experience with falcons, dogs, horses and
ferrets, and even the chance to walk away with
awards and prizes in archery, target shooting
and many other activities. However, if that does
not send you racing to Belvoir Castle at the end
Competition
of July to try all the traditional country sports on
offer, then take the family and pound the areas
of the show that displays the newer activities
to be enjoyed in the countryside. Aerial
Trekking, bungee trampolining, quad bikes,
laser combat, maize maze, off-road driving,
wall climbing, simulated parachute jumping,
woodland walk, woodland crafts and family
dog events are a few of the hours of fun to be
had whether you are five or 75.
With the start of the school summer holidays,
this show will give youngsters the opportunity
to find so many activities they can enjoy in the
countryside. For the under 10’s, there will be
free Kids Activity Bags which will enable parents
to find all the main activities that this age
group will particularly enjoy. The Countryside
Foundation for Education will be there with
heaps of things for the younger visitor to enjoy,
including bug hunting, tree identification,
butterfly and moth mobile making and wildlife
spotting competitions and for the older child,
there are endless activities and tuition areas.
There are also fabulous gardening, equestrian
and food shows. The equestrian show,
aptly called ‘Hooked on Horses’ introduces
newcomers to the many different breeds of
horses and their fortes, as well as offering
advice on how to start riding. The Gardening
Show will feature many Chelsea Flower Show
Gold Medalists, as well as other wonderful
displays of gardens and garden accessories.
An area of the show not to be missed is the
Totally Food Show, which features regional and
local producers from many areas of the country
but will particularly promote East Midland
producers. In the heart of this area, there is
a picnic area with live music where visitors
can sit and enjoy all the samples they have
gathered up as they visited the stands. With all
this on offer what better way to get the summer
holidays off to a great start…
More and more people are quitting the rat race
and choosing to live a simpler existence in the
country, away from the frustrating traffic jams
and bustling crowds often experienced in the city.
Living The
Good Life…
Despite the recession, many seeking their
slice of the good life aren’t abandoning their
dreams of a simpler life in the country. If
you’re looking for a reliable income that fits
in with your new life, Aspire have the perfect
idea – alpacas.
It’s been over two years since we first
introduced our readers to these amazing
creatures and they continue to increase
in popularity. Ross Alpacas is a family
run business based in Ross-on-Wye,
Herefordshire.
John Nichols and his wife, Gill, first came
across alpacas over a decade ago at the
Royal Show when they lived in Warwickshire;
however both John and his wife decided they
wanted to move away from the hustle and
bustle of the city. John picks up their tale:
“It all started when, as a silly present for my
wife’s 60th, we spent the day on a farm with
alpacas - after that, we were hooked. A few
months after the ‘alpaca experience’ we
sold up in Warwickshire and moved to the
Herefordshire countryside and bought three
alpacas – the herd has grown over the last
two years and now consists of 10 alpacas:
Country Life
Country
COOL
Life in the beautiful English countryside provides us with a
more relaxing and tranquil way of life, without the usual city
worries of crime and noise. It also gives our lungs a break
from the constant smog of pollution. Life in the country
offers a more relaxed pace of life within a community.
This back-to-basis way of life has become popular due to
the increased congestion, pollution and noise within our
cities, as well as an increased awareness of the health
benefits of life surrounded by fields - it’s easy to see why so
many people are making the move.
The wide open spaces, combined with the lack of traffic in
the country all allow your children to reap the benefits of
country life. They can play outside whilst you relax inside,
free from the worry of them bothering the neighbours,
crossing busy roads or even becoming the victim of a crime.
There are numerous rural towns and villages within the
Aspire region that offer this relaxed way of life, surrounded
by open fields and an abundance of fresh, clean air.
Places such as Newtown Linford, Oaks in Charnwood, and
Heather are all situated within the National Forest Boundary,
ensuring your new way of life remains protected and isn’t
gobbled up in years to come by developers.
three Suri’s and seven Huacaya’s. We’re
not in this to make our fortune; just simply
to enjoy a better quality of life and produce
some high quality alpacas at the same time.”
Ross Alpacas currently have two Suri alpacas
for sale. They have also recently sent two
female Huacaya alpacas to stud, so will be
expecting cria sometime next year.
John told Aspire: “We’ve cut back on our
breeding programme recently, mainly due to
the credit crunch, but also because we don’t
want the herd to grow too big; between 10
and 12 animals is a good size for us, as we
want to be able to offer good quality animals
at reasonable prices.”
The Good Life...
f you’ve ever dreamt of living the good life but
Ihaven’t the skills to make your dream a reality,
help is now on hand thanks to Cliff Dewing.
After fulfilling his own ambition of owning a
smallholding two years ago, Cliff now offers
practical, hands-on courses for anyone looking
to make the leap themselves.
Over the last couple of years, Cliff has attended
many different courses himself and has learnt
how to become as self-sufficient as possible,
whilst keeping costs to a minimum, which makes
him the ideal person for the job. Although he
admits the experience has been harder than he
first envisaged, it has also been well worth it.
These smallholding courses provide a valuable
insight for anyone interested in setting up
their own and include vital information on the
suitability and size of land, equipment they may
need, as well as general costs. The courses
are held at Cliff’s 13 acre smallholding in west
Wales, where he can teach you all you need to
know about keeping pigs, poultry, sheep and
cows.
Whether you buy a delightful stone cottage in the heart of a
small village or a secluded farmhouse away from everything,
life in the country offers an unrivalled peaceful, relaxed and
laid-back lifestyle.
Most villages have a committee that organise events
throughout the year, so locals can meet, socialise and get to
know each other. It’s quite comforting, especially if you have
children, to know that you live in a place where people look
out for each other. However if you are not the social sort,
then perhaps a small village where everyone knows your
business might not be the best place.
They say the best things in life are free and in the country
they certainly are. There are few better ways to spend a
sunny Sunday morning than a brisk stroll to the local village
post office to fetch the paper, or even a bike ride to the local
shop for fresh croissants.
As part of this new lifestyle, why not invest in a small flock
of chickens to provide your family with fresh eggs each
morning. A vegetable patch is another way to cut costs and
control what your family eats, as well as fully immersing
yourself into your new life.
Learn all about housing chickens, ducks and
geese, keeping them safe from predators and
preventing pests, such as mites and lice, on
a poultry course. Whilst the pig course can
teach you all about health care, breeding,
building adequate fencing and many other
skills. Learning how to handle animals correctly
and knowing the legal requirements of keeping
them are essential. Grass management is also
important and as your biggest crop, it’s vital you
know how to care for your land correctly.
The courses are held on the last weekend of
every month and are priced at £55 per day or
£100 for the weekend, which includes lunch. The
next small holding and pig and poultry courses
will be held on 27th and 28th June.
Diver’s Guide
Saddle Up
Their beautiful, grand appearance and friendly nature
make them a much loved animal with both adults and
children alike. However, owning a horse can be a costly
business, as well as a huge commitment, and therefore
it’s vital you do your research before taking such a huge
step. The average life expectancy of a horse in 27 years,
according to Horse and Hound, making them a
long-term commitment.
If you’re unsure where to start with
buying a horse, there are many aspects
to consider. It’s important to spend
time doing your research and finding
a breed that suits your personality,
as well as the level of care you can
give. Horses need a lot of exercise so
it’s vital, when looking to purchase a
horse, that you consider how much
time you want to spend riding and fit
the horse’s needs around your own.
If you can only afford to spend three
days riding per week, then this is an
important factor to think about. It may
be tempting to decide you want to buy
a horse based on how it looks, but
this could easily turn out to be a big
mistake, as the horse’s temperament
may not be what you expected.
For those new to riding, it’s a good
idea to spend time learning how to
ride, as well as understanding the
responsibilities that come with owning
one of these beautiful creatures.
Taking time out to visit a stables and
learning the jobs involved in looking
after a horse on a regular basis, such
as mucking out and grooming, will
be worthwhile in the long-run, as
will learning what vaccinations may
be needed and potential medical
problems. Work out the monthly cost of
renting stables, as well as the amount
you will need for feed, bedding and
insurance, before you consider buying
a horse.
Prior to purchasing a horse it is
always recommended that a prepurchase
examination is carried out
by a professional. This will identify
any existing health problems, which
could prove to be costly later on in the
horse’s life. Many charities and animal
sanctuaries now run schemes which
will allow you to re-home a rescued
horse, providing the level of care you
can give is right for the animal in
question. Whilst the horse remains the
property of the charity, it will live with
an adoptive family for the rest of its life.
This may be one option to think about
if you would prefer to help a rescued
horse.
Remember that this is a long-term
commitment, so be sure of your
decision before you take on such an
enormous responsibility.
Old CroftFalabellas
home of the purebred
After purchasing her
first Falabella horse in
May 2006, breeder
Lynn Wright fell in love
with this adorable breed. Lynn’s
home, Horsley Hale Farm,
situated in the heart of the Fens,
has since become home to
several horses and it’s easy to
see why. She explains: “I liked
their personalities, as they are a
naturally inquisitive and friendly
breed. They are also curious and
playful, yet they are still small
enough to handle easily. I love
the fact they are all so different in
colour and pattern, and of course,
they also have a huge ‘ahh’ factor.”
Lynn has only recently begun
breeding the Falabellas at the farm,
with the first foal born in November
2007. The Old Croft prefix was
chosen after Lynn discovered a river
of the same name once ran along
the edge of Horsley Hale Farm.
As one of the smallest breeds in the
world, Falabellas are a perfectly
proportioned horse, standing on
average at 32” - 34”, but they can
grow taller. These delightful animals
are perfect for anyone who would
like to show horses, breed them, or
are looking for a companion for a
larger horse.
All of the horses are registered with
the British Falabella Studbook, the
only UK pure-bred register directly
linked to Argentina – the original
home of these beautiful horses.
Lynn believes there is only one
method that can prove a horse
is 100% Falabella. She says: “I
personally believe that the only way
to be sure that you’re buying a true
Falabella is through DNA testing.
They are such a rare breed, so if
I’m planning to sell a horse I want
to be able to prove that it is a true
Falabella.”
DNA tests are carried out on
a sample of the horse’s hair,
collected by a vet before being sent
to Holland, along with details of
the horse’s parentage, where the
bloodlines of Falabellas are held in
a database. In order to be a purebred,
it is essential the horses have
traceable Argentinean ancestry.
The Falabellas are not the only
horses on the farm; Old Croft
Shires, established by Lynn’s son
Ben, is home at present to 13
Shires. Ben breeds and shows in
hand, as seen in the photo below.
His website can be found at www.
oldcroftshires.com where there are
occasionally horses for sale. Ben
has exported several horses, as well
as having UK sales and has built a
foundation of good breeding stock.
Old Croft Shires and Falabellas
offer the best in both heavy weight
and miniature horses.
Scuba Diving is an amazing experience
that transports you to another world; an
underground world full of new colours,
sights, sounds and textures that’ll have
you hooked. And, you can do it almost
anywhere there is water - there are
plenty of opportunities right here in
the UK…
Thanks to clear seas and warm waters
surrounding Cornwall, the area is
teaming with marine wildlife just waiting
to be discovered. Add to this, numerous
historic shipwrecks, rugged underwater
geology, HMS Scylla and you will see
why Cornwall is an international diving
hotspot.
However, if you’re a seasoned expert,
Scotland is the place to go. Scotland is
considered as one of the top ten diving
destinations in the world due to the
wreckages of the German fleet littered
within Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands.
Despite the cooler waters and lack of
tropical fish, Scotland’s dive sites don’t
disappoint, thanks to two million year
old reefs, shipwrecks, inquisitive wildlife,
and great dive schools that can cope with
total beginners right through to semiprofessional
divers.
Compared with getting started in other
popular adventure sports and outdoor
activities learning to dive isn’t expensive.
Learning to dive is a great value when
you consider that your PADI Instructor
is a highly trained and experienced
professional. Invest in scuba diving
Diving is a hobby that has been steadily growing
in popularity over the last decade. If you’d like
to build up your diving experience, Aspire have
found the perfect place, and the perfect company
to do it with…
Scapa Flow Charters operate in and around the
Orkney Isles, focusing on the wreck-ridden Scapa
Flow. The Scapa Flow is littered with World War I
wrecks from the German high seas fleet, making
it the ideal place to explore the wonderful world
under the water.
Established since 1994, Scapa Flow Charters
is the brainchild of experienced boatman and
diver Andy Cuthbertson, who has over 20
years experience exploring and sailing the
waters around Orkney, Scotland, Shetland and
Cape Wrath. All dives organised by Andy and
Scapa Flow Charters take place on one of the
company’s two specially designed ex-fishing
boats: MV Jean Elaine and MV Sharon Rose.
Both boats have been converted to offer both
day boat charters and live-aboard. MV Jean
Elaine is skippered by Andy, whilst MV Sharon
Rose is skipped by Kevin, both of whom have
lessons and learn something you’ll enjoy
the rest of your life. From the first day,
diving starts transforming your life with
new experiences you share with friends.
With a PADI qualified instructor, you’ll be
diving in no time. Typically, you complete
the PADI Open Water Diver course over
anywhere from three or four days to six
weeks, depending upon how frequently
you meet with your instructor. PADI
courses are performance-based, which
means your instructor’s interested in you
learning to dive, not in how long you sit
in a class. This means that you progress
at your own pace - faster or slower
depending upon the time you need to
become a confident diver who dives
regularly. To find our more, or to locate
your nearest PADI approved centre,
please visit www.padi.com
If diving is something you’re interested
in, or would like to know more about
how to get involved, Dive 2009 returns
to Birmingham’s NEC in October. Here,
hundreds of leading suppliers of the
latest diving gear, holidays, training
courses, leisurewear and boats meet with
thousands of experienced and wannabe
divers from the UK, Europe and beyond.
With hundreds of new ideas on the
exhibition floor - plus the opportunity
to try out and purchase the latest kit -
there's no better place to go for diving
information, advice and inspiration. Log
Birdwatching
Luxury Holidays
Free As A Bird
Birds have one thing that we humans don’t that fascinates us - the
power of flight! There are many different reasons why people enjoy bird
watching, from the peace and quiet of sitting outdoors observing birds
in their natural habitat, to exploring different countries in the hope of
spotting something rare.
According to the RSPB (Royal Society
for the Protection of Birds), three million
adults go birdwatching every year. To
make birdwatching safe and fun for
everyone, the RSPB, along with other
leading bird organisations, magazines
and websites, have developed the
‘Birdwatchers Code’, which applies not
just when you are at a nature reserve,
but whenever you are watching birds in
the UK or abroad.
Birds respond to people in many ways,
depending on the species, location and
time of year. For example, disturbance
can keep birds from their nests, leaving
chicks hungry or enabling predators to
take eggs or young. Avoid getting too
close to birds or disturbing their habitats
- if a bird flies away or makes repeated
alarm calls, you’re too close. Whether
your particular interest is photography,
sound recording, or birdwatching,
remember that the interests of the bird
must always come first.
The best way to perfect your
birdwatching skills, without breaking
the code, is to enjoy a birdwatching
break this summer. There are countless
destinations across the country that
provide the ideal opportunity to see
birds in their natural habitat, and each
place has numerous accommodation
solutions in which to rest after a long day
Holiday in Style this Summer...
feature by
Stacey Wragg
Week after week the
newspapers are filled with
doom and gloom. Stories
about the credit crunch, job
losses and the rising cost of
living have all dominated
headlines over the last few
months - it’s no wonder we’re
all desperately counting
down the days to our summer
holiday. So, why not treat
yourself to a luxury break this
year and enjoy an escape
from it all.
If you’re looking to holiday
on a certain budget but
you’re not a fan of the great
outdoors, you might want to
consider taking a short luxury
break instead of a full blown
summer holiday this year. If
the thought of having to pitch
your own tent or stumble your
way to the toilet blocks at night
brings you out in a cold sweat,
you could spend your money
wisely on a long weekend at a
luxury hotel, a blissful break at
a spa or health farm, or hide
away from it all at a country
cottage.
You don’t need to go abroad
in order to treat yourself to a
luxury break, the UK has just
as many holiday havens as
more exotic countries, without
the hassle of cancelled flights
and lost luggage. Why not
splash some cash and indulge
yourself with a break at a fivestar
hotel, where you’ll have
everything you need on hand
and where you won’t have to
lift a finger.
Health farms and spa breaks
are an increasingly popular
choice of holiday for those
who need a little pampering.
Enjoy a whole range of beauty
treatments and massages,
and treat yourself to a little
‘me’ time, whilst you relax and
unwind from the stresses of
day to day life. Most spas offer
all in beauty treatments, so
make the most of it and spoil
yourself.
If you’re in need of a real
escape from the hustle and
bustle of city life then the
luxury country cottage should
be at the top of your holiday
wish list. Enjoy the privacy,
quiet and beauty of a rural
retreat, with all the comforts
of home.
UK Holiday Breaks
Beautiful
Bonny Scotland
www.visitscotland.com
Book Yourself A
British Break
East Sussex
Whether you’re looking for a city break, beach getaway or countryside adventure,
Scotland is the place. A holiday in Scotland promises to be a unique and memorable
event. From the excitement of Scottish cities Glasgow and Edinburgh, to the mystery and
wonder of Loch Ness, Scotland is an exciting and dynamic country, steeped in history,
tradition and culture.
Despite its compact size, Scotland is home to an array of attractions that are sure to
occupy every member of the family, no matter what their age or taste. And there’s never
been a better time than now to visit, as 2009 is Scotland’s Homecoming Year. Back in
June 2008, the Rt Hon Alex Salmond, MSP, First Minister of Scotland, officially launched
the first ever Homecoming Year, at Edinburgh Castle.
Inspired by the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns,
Homecoming Scotland 2009 will encourage people of Scottish descent, Scots, and
those who love Scotland, to come home in 2009. Those who attend can take part in
an inspirational celebration of Scotland’s culture, heritage and some of the many great
contributions Scotland has given the world.
Until St Andrew’s Day on November 30th 2009, a countrywide programme of
Homecoming events and activities has been designed to celebrate some of Scotland’s
great contributions to the world. These include Burns himself, whisky, golf, great Scottish
minds and innovations, and Scotland’s culture and heritage, which lives on at home and
through Scotland’s global family.
Organisations all over the country,
ranging from community groups, to public
and private bodies are planning new
and enhanced Homecoming activities,
and invite both Scots, and those with
a passion for Scotland, to join the
celebrations throughout 2009!
The six major cities of Scotland (Glasgow,
Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee,
Inverness and Stirling) offer a myriad of
entertainments, restaraunts, bars and
clubs as well as museums, theaters and
art galleries, making them the perfect
destination for a romantic weekend away
for two!
As Scotland is home to a beautiful
yet diverse landscape, it’s the perfect
destination for those wanting to enjoy the
great outdoors. Many pursuits such as
climbing, cycling and kayaking can be
enjoyed in abundance.
Alternatively, you may just fancy a day on
a nice beach or nature walk to admire the
rural beauty and varied wildlife. Scotland
is THE place for wildlife; The Scottish
Wildlife and Nature Tourism Operators
Association believes Scotland is the
number one destination for watching
wildlife in Europe, thanks to the diversity
of the landscape. Recent years have seen
the re-introduction of many native Scottish
species, most notably the Sea Eagle and
Red Kites, which now grace the Scottish
skies once again.
Wonderful Wester Bonnyton
stablished since 1972, Wester Bonnyton Caravan & Camping Park is the perfect
Ebase from which to explore and have the kind of family holiday you enjoyed as
a child. With 20 six to eight-berth static caravans and eight to ten touring pitches
(all with electric hook-up) available form March until October, Wester Bonnyton, in
Aberdeenshire, is the perfect base from which to explore northern Scotland.
Based on Wester Bonnyton Farm, the Park boasts the most spectacular views of the
Moray Firth, and a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere - perfect for relaxing whilst the
kids play amongst themselves on the outdoor play area, in the play barn (with pool table,
table tennis etc) or even just amongst the green spaces. The site also has a modern toilet
and shower block with FREE hot water, as well as washing up facilities and a laundry
room.
It’s for this, and their perfect central location, that Aspire
recently awarded Wester Bonnyton Caravan & Camping
Park with a Certificate of Recognition for Traditional Family
Holidays.
For a traditional family holiday, you’ll need sandy, safe and clean
beaches for the kids to play on; well, look no further as just a
short distance away, the Aberdeenshire beaches are perfect for
building sandcastles, paddling in the sea, and rock pooling. You
could even treat the family to ice creams on the sea front or a
portion of traditional fish ‘n’ chips!
The coast is not only great for families and young children, it’s
also great for walkers, thanks to the numerous trails and routes
in the region that cater for all levels, from those who just fancy
a relaxing stroll, to those experienced ramblers who’d like a hill
hike or coastal trek.
The traditional British seaside break is booming, as holiday-makers opt for a holiday
at home this year. The credit crunch has left us all watching the pennies and that
means we want good value for money from our annual summer holiday. A survey by
Travelodge, conducted earlier this year, found that 54% plan to spend their break in
the UK this year, with the majority heading straight for the coast. Advanced bookings
with the Caravan Club are also reported to be up by 40%, compared to last year.
With so many of us choosing a British break, we all have our fingers tightly crossed
that this summer might finally be a dry, warm one - rather than the washout of
recent years. Well, there’s good news all round, as Britain is set to bask in sunshine
all summer, according to Met Office forecasts. Describing the coming months as a
‘barbecue summer’, they’ve predicted warmer temperatures than average, topping
30˚C in most places. Ewen McCallum, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, has
also said that a repeat of the wet summers of the past two years is very unlikely. So, it
looks like Britain is certainly the place to stay this summer.
Choosing to holiday in the UK also provides the perfect chance for you to visit
somewhere new. A survey conducted by Vauxhall, released last month, found that
British holiday makers, on average, have only visited 2% of this country’s 1,200
towns and cities. Out of all these wonderful places, most of us will only ever visit 28
of Britain’s towns and cities in our lifetime.
We’re all guilty of choosing the safe option and deciding to revisit places that we
know and love, but you don’t have to go abroad for a brand new experience,
country houses, coves and beaches, watersports, rock climbing and museums, the
UK is bursting with something for everyone to enjoy. With so much variety and so
many new places to discover, why not give your family a new experience this summer
and venture into the unknown.
You won’t find a friendlier place
to stay than this small, family-run
caravan park, owned by Patricia
Lunnon. Living up to its name,
Little Haven provides adults with
an unrivalled rural haven, situated
away from the busy seaside resorts.
Patricia and family pride themselves
on the cleanliness of the facilities
here, as well as the warm welcome
that awaits their guests. Patricia
explains: “We’re a well secluded,
pretty, quiet park and we’re
situated in one of the most beautiful
areas of Norfolk. Our guests are
so taken with the place that they
return every year and we have built
up many regular customers over the
years.”
Situated within easy reach of the
coast and its magnificent beaches,
the park is just six miles from the
popular seaside resort of Cromer
and only three miles away from
Aylsham, a picturesque market
town.
The 24 spacious pitches - all with
electric hook-up - are situated
around the edge of the Park, which
is surrounded by hedges and trees,
giving guests a more secluded
place to relax. The central area
of the park is home to a beautiful
pergola and seating area, providing
the ideal place to unwind and enjoy
the sunshine. The onsite facilities
have everything you will need
during your stay. The heated toilet
blocks offer showers, sinks, washing
up and laundry facilities - complete
with free hot water. Pets are also
welcome onsite and park is open
from 1st March to 31st October.
Norfolk really does offer something
for everyone and Little Haven is the
best location for experiencing it all.
The nearby Weavers Way, which
goes from Cromer all the way down
to Great Yarmouth, is a fantastic
walking route for seeing more of this
beautiful area. Fishing is also hugely
popular locally and ideal sites for
sea and coarse angling can be
found near to Little Haven.
The countryside here is teaming
with wildlife; in fact it’s one of the
country’s top destinations for bird
watchers, with Pensthorpe Nature
Reserve having recently featured
on the BBC’s Springwatch. Have a
fun day spotting seals at Blakeney
Point or why not enjoy a hawk walk
at the East Anglian Falconry. Bure
Valley Railway, Wroxham Barns and
Blickling Hall are also well worth
a visit. If you want a break from
cooking after a busy day exploring
then there are two pubs within
walking distance, both offering
hearty food and traditional ales.
Wales
Many holiday destinations claim to cater for
every taste, but Wales is one place that can
truly make this claim. One small yet beautiful
area of Wales that Aspire would like to draw
your attention to is the Lleyn Peninsula, which
stretches from Caernarfon to Porthmadog in
northwest Wales.
For most of its length, the Lleyn Peninsula is
only eight miles wide, but that doesn’t mean
there’s nothing to see or do. To truly appreciate
the beauty, tranquillity and serenity of the
area, Aspire would like to recommend a stay at
Abererch Sands Holiday Centre.
Boasting truly breathtaking views of
Snowdonia in one direction and Cardigan Bay
in the other, Abererch Sands has an
Scotland
accommodation solution to suit most
requirements and budgets. The level grass
camping site allows carefree camping, whilst
the touring pitches are separately marked
and provided with water supply and electrical
hook-ups. There is also a rally field available.
Dogs are allowed on site but must be kept on a
lead at all times.
The unique selling point of Abererch Sands is
the four-mile long, private, safe sandy beach
that runs along the whole length of the site,
meaning all 200+ touring and tent pitches are
a short walk away from the golden sand-dunes
and the sparkling sea, warmed by the gulf
stream.
If rock-pooling, building sandcastles or sunbathing
isn’t your thing, then Abererch Sands
Travel Back
In Time With...
Elma
Johnson
Holiday Centre also has an indoor heated
swimming pool, complete with adjacent patio
area, onsite which is exclusively for holiday
visitors and residents. The site also boasts a
fitness room, a snooker room, and a children’s
play area. For guests’ convenience, the site
also has a launderette and a small, self-service
shop.
The unofficial capital of the Lleyn Peninsula,
Pwllheli and its shops, restaurants and pubs,
is only two miles down the road. This bustling
market town has all the charm you’d expect
from a seaside town and the impressive new
marina berths over 400 boats, making it a
great place to relax and watch the world go by
at a much slower pace.
Further afield, Abererch Sands is perfectly
placed to discover everything north Wales has
to offer, especially Snowdonia National Park.
Boasting the highest mountain in England and
Wales, Snowdonia National Park attracts
Have you ever been away on holiday and
wanted to know more about the history,
folklore, and traditions of the area Well,
if you’re thinking of visiting Shetland, you can
learn all this and more thanks to Elma Johnson
and her Island Trails, which Aspire think are so
informative and authentic we recently awarded
her with a Certificate of Recognition for Unique
Scottish Experience.
Elma has been running Island Trails across
Shetland and the Isles for the last 30 years.
Her passion and enthusiasm for the area and
its history shines through on every tour. Elma
told Aspire: “I’ve always been interested in
tourism, and started running Island Trails about
30 years ago. I learned everything I know from
the late Thomas Henderson MBE (who was an
historian and founder of the Shetland Museum),
who I worked with in his small hotel. He was an
internationally respected expert on Shetland and
her history, so the information given comes from
the best.”
Elma’s Island Trails have gone from strength to
strength. With such a wealth of knowledge on
mainland Shetland and the one hundred isles
that surround her, Elma can tailor-make tours
to suit you and what you’d like to know. In fact,
Elma’s Island Trails have been going so well that
she’s joined forces with other Shetland experts
to offer an even wider range of guided tours that
give you a unique insight and experience of life
in Shetland through the ages.
thousands of visitors each year to witness the
breathtaking scenery of this Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. Fringed with the
Wales Heritage Coast, Snowdonia is a haven
for walkers, bird watchers, history buffs -
thanks to the huge collection of castles in the
area - and families looking for a stress-free
family holiday.
The best way to see the best scenery is by
rail; the Welsh Highland Railway starts in
Caernarfon and ends in Portmadog whilst the
Ffestiniog Railway starts in Portmadog and
ends at Blaenau Ffestiniog – that’s almost 40
miles of narrow-gauge steam!
With prices ranging from £19 per night during
the low season (tent pitches) to £22 per night
(touring caravan pitches), a stay at Abererch
A Welsh
Wonder…
“All my tours are all day events; I could never do
them in half a day, there’s just too much to see
and do and too many stories to tell. My Island
Trails are great for anyone visiting this magical
area – the history, traditions and folklore date
back to the beginning of time,” Elma explained.
Being such an expert on Shetland, Elma can
show you the best routes, the most spectacular
scenery, introduce you to the most delicious
local food, and bring Shetland and its landscape,
history, and people to life.
On receiving our Certificate of Recognition for
Unique Scottish Experience, Elma said: “Thank
you Aspire for this prestigious recognition. It
means so much to me because I enjoy every
aspect of my job. This isn’t the first time I’ve
been recognised; in 2001, I was a finalist in the
Scottish Thistle Awards for Cultural Tourism,
and later I was awarded a four-star rating by
VisitScotland in recognition of an Excellent
Standard of Facilities and Services. I also hold
‘Hospitality Assured’, the standard for Service
I became a Platinum Member of Cambridge
Dermapetwear
Protective Jackets Scoop Certificate of Recognition
Owning a pet can bring endless joy;
however if your pet becomes ill or
needs an operation, seeing them
in pain or discomfort for any length
of time is upsetting. Aspire has
discovered an innovative product
- Dermapetwear Protective Jackets -
which can aid recovery.
Officially launched in February this
year, Dermapetwear Protective Jackets
are the brain-child of Sylvia Beeby,
who developed the product after her
own brown Burmese, Suky, developed
a skin condition that she continually
licked and bit at, thus perpetuating fur
loss and infections.
“Suky spent much of her life in a
dreaded Elizabethan collar, which
never really seemed to help her
problem, so I searched for an
alternative. Her illness seemed to be a
never-ending cycle; we would clear up
the rash with antibiotics and steroids
only for it to return a week later – it was
very upsetting watching my beloved
pet leading a very poor quality of life.
After three desperate years, I trawled
the internet for some kind of protection
in the form of a jacket, but to no avail.
So, I decided to design a jacket myself.
I actually started off with some altered
baby grows but after working closely
with a friend who works for the RSPCA
and my vet, I developed and designed
Dermapetwear Protective Jackets,”
Sylvia explained.
Dermapetwear Protective Jackets
are available in three sizes: small,
medium and large (up to 12”, up to
14”, and over 15” from neck to tail).
The jackets are made from soft antibacterial
stretch fabric that, along
with medication from your vet, can aid
recovery. They can also be machine
washed over and over.
“The jacket was developed using Suky
as the model,” Sylvia explained. “As
you would expect she did not like the
jacket at first, however, she quickly
adjusted to it and was able to climb
and run around like a ‘normal’ cat in no
time; unlike the years she had to wear
the Elizabethan collar.”
The jackets have also been designed
so cats can use the litter tray without
removal being necessary, and they
remain secure thanks to a built-in
collar.
Since their launch in February, there
has been remarkable interest in
Dermapetwear Protective Jackets and
not just from individual pet owners;
Sylvia’s local RSPCA centre in Sheffield
not only helped her design the product,
they also use them on their postoperative
cats, as well as protecting
mother cats from overzealous kittens.
Another Yorkshire based animal
charity, Keighley Cat Care, are also avid
supports of Dermapetwear Protective
Jackets, labelling them the ‘best thing
since sliced bread’.
It’s not hard to see why there is such
interest in these jackets, which is
why Aspire has awarded Sylvia and
Dermapetwear Ltd with a Certificate of
Recognition for Design and Innovation.
On hearing the news of this accolade,
Sylvia said: “Thank you for this
Certificate Aspire. I’m so proud of these
protective jackets, which I feel are
much kinder to cats; they also allow
cats to move around freely, feeling with
their whiskers, which the Elizabethan
collar doesn’t allow them to do. My
Suky has been much happier since
wearing the jacket, and I’m confident
other cats will be too.”
Senior Sales Executive, Barbara Stone,
added: “Unfortunately, when a beloved
pet has stitches from an operation
or a skin condition, we’re unable to
tell them not to itch or scratch at it.
But thanks to these jackets, that’s no
longer a problem; cats no longer have
to fear the Elizabethan collar as these
jackets allow them to be ‘normal’ whilst
they recover. The jackets also seem
to stop them even attempting to bite,
scratch or lick the affected area, curing
self-mutilation habits, which can only
be a good thing.”
Not only are these jackets great for
stopping cats biting and scratching
at infections, rashes or stitches,
they’re also reasonably priced. Each
jacket, regardless of size, costs just
£31.95, with UK delivery costing £3.95
and worldwide delivery just £8.95.
Dermapetwear Protective Jackets are
available for vets, animal charities and
other professionals to buy at wholesale
prices.
