STATEMENT BY THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Cargo and
Passenger Volumes
Port of Tyne owned berths operated either
directly or by third parties continue to
account for most of the cargo handled by
businesses located on the banks of the
River Tyne. In 2011, 95% of all cargo was
either loaded or discharged at Port of Tyne
owned berths, compared to 91% in 2010.
The total tonnage of all cargoes handled
at River Tyne berths increased by 66% to
5,332k tonnes in 2011. This was due to
an increase in cargo handling directly by
the Port of Tyne which increased by 78%
to 4,895k tonnes, mainly due to growth
in biomass and coal volumes.
The increase in cargo volumes is reflected
in the overall level of river traffic activity.
Total movements have increased by 10%
to 4,732 whilst vessel arrivals have
increased by 11% to 2,081 and gross
tonnage of all vessels arriving at the Tyne
increased by 14% to 29,351k tonnes.
The table right outlines the level of activity
relating to the Port’s five business areas
in metrics that are relevant to the
performance of each.
The increase in Conventional and Bulk
Cargoes is due to a rise in coal handled
which increased by 1,324k tonnes following
favourable movements in the price of coal
relative to other fuel, such as gas, used by
the Port’s power generation customers, and
an increase in biomass tonnage of 600k
tonnes which reflected the first full year of
operation of the biomass handling facility.
The Port’s Car Terminals business also
showed significant growth in 2011,
recording its best ever trading levels of
667k, due to the growth of Nissan exports
and the first full year of operation of the
Höegh Northern transhipment terminal.
Dredging activity
A total of 695k cubic metres of material
was removed from the river in 2011, an
increase of 379k cubic metres, compared
to the prior year. Dredging volumes have
been significantly impacted by the capital
dredge that was undertaken during 2011
when the river channel was deepened by
0.9 metres to 10 metres.
*The figures exclude vessels under 30m in length
and dredging vessels
Record container volumes of 71k teu were
also achieved; a rise of 25% reflecting
increased demand for imported parts for
Nissan at its Sunderland car production
plant and also higher demand for
consumer goods.
