A <strong>PhD</strong> position is available <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Institute<br />

of <strong>Biom<strong>at</strong>erials</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department M<strong>at</strong>erials Science and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, with<strong>in</strong><br />

BIOBONE Initial Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Network (ITN), funded by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Marie</strong> <strong>Curie</strong> actions<br />

under <strong>the</strong> FP7 People Programme from <strong>the</strong> European Commission. The<br />

deadl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>for</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ions is July 20, 2012. The appo<strong>in</strong>tment will be <strong>for</strong> 3 years,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> successful applicant is expected to register <strong>for</strong> a <strong>PhD</strong> programme <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> School of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The aim of <strong>the</strong> BIOBONE (Bioceramics <strong>for</strong> Bone Repair) project is to offer<br />

multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of bioceramics, bioactive glasses and<br />

composites <strong>for</strong> bone repair, which <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> development of ZrO2-based<br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials <strong>for</strong> orthopedic applic<strong>at</strong>ions, CaP and bioactive glass scaffolds <strong>for</strong><br />

bone regener<strong>at</strong>ion as well as composites and nanohybrids, <strong>in</strong> collabor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

with <strong>in</strong>dustry and universities. The scientific goals are to develop advanced<br />

knowledge on a range of bioceramics, bioactive glasses, hybrids and<br />

composites focus<strong>in</strong>g on i) new process<strong>in</strong>g str<strong>at</strong>egies, ii) biodegrad<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g and optimiz<strong>at</strong>ion, and iii) cell-m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>in</strong>teractions.<br />

The present position (ESR: Early stage researcher) is with<strong>in</strong> Work Package 1<br />

of BIOBONE, which is dedic<strong>at</strong>ed to “Process<strong>in</strong>g and New M<strong>at</strong>erials” and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subproject: “Bioactive m<strong>at</strong>erials <strong>for</strong> Bone Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g/Multifunctional<br />

Scaffolds”.<br />

We are seek<strong>in</strong>g an enthusiastic, motiv<strong>at</strong>ed young researcher with an ability<br />

to work to a high standard. The candid<strong>at</strong>e must possess excellent<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion, plann<strong>in</strong>g, organiz<strong>at</strong>ion, team work<strong>in</strong>g, practical, problemsolv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and record-keep<strong>in</strong>g skills. The applicant must demonstr<strong>at</strong>e fluency <strong>in</strong><br />

spoken and written English (German is very welcome, but not mand<strong>at</strong>ory).<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> applicant should demonstr<strong>at</strong>e previous knowledge or<br />

experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>at</strong> least one relevant field such as m<strong>at</strong>erials science, chemistry,<br />

bioeng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g or a rel<strong>at</strong>ed subject area. Candid<strong>at</strong>es with experience and<br />

expertise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g areas will be particularly welcome:<br />

- Bioceramics and composites<br />

- Electrosp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

- Tissue Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Job</strong> description: The goal of <strong>the</strong> project is to develop advanced str<strong>at</strong>egies <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> surface<br />

functionalis<strong>at</strong>ion of bioactive glass scaffolds <strong>for</strong> bone tissue eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. 3D scaffolds<br />

will be fabric<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> foam replica method, polymer co<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g

and electrosp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g or electrophoretic deposition. Surface functionalised scaffolds<br />

with nanotopography will be fabric<strong>at</strong>ed and characterised. Nanotopographies will be<br />

<strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion of electrophoretic deposition of functional<br />

nanoparticles and/or co<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g with nanofibres obta<strong>in</strong>ed by electrosp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

polymer <strong>in</strong>filtr<strong>at</strong>ion. Particular <strong>at</strong>tention will be placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

nanofibrous topography and 3D macroporous structures with added functionalities.<br />

Cell biology experiments to <strong>in</strong>vestig<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance of <strong>the</strong> new scaffolds <strong>for</strong><br />

bone regener<strong>at</strong>ion will be per<strong>for</strong>med.<br />
