A Letter from the Superintendent
August , 2009
Dear Lindbergh Alumni,
It is common that I meet
people in the south
county area who tell me
that they are Lindbergh
graduates. Many of our
graduates decide to live
in this area, raise their
families, and enjoy the
wonderful quality of life
available here. This wonderful quality of life in part
originates from the wellspring that is Lindbergh
Schools; it nourishes us in many ways.
Homes in the Lindbergh district retain their value and
sell at a premium, based in part on the reputation of
the school system. Friendships that are formed
while attending school in the Lindbergh district con-
tinue to be a blessing for a lifetime. Our graduates
are well rounded with great academic skills and thus
have successful careers. Crime and negative social
issues are few in the Lindbergh Schools area because
the population is a caring, law-abiding group
with high quality values.
Being a Lindbergh graduate makes each of you a
vital part of our social foundation. We hope that you
will continue to be proud of your Flyer heritage, keep
in touch, and follow the activities in Lindbergh
Schools. It is still the same wonderful place you remember
and we are constantly striving to educate
another generation so that they will be just as successful
as you have been.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Simpson - Superintendent
A Letter from the Principal
Lindbergh Alumni,
You are always welcome at Lindbergh High
School! Call, then come visit our campus to view
the familiar places and see the new additions. Our
2009-2010 school year has started with over 2000
students in attendance. They, along with the staff,
are celebrating a number of school-wide accomplishments.
Lindbergh was again recognized for
being a "Top 1000" school in the nation by Newsweek.
World and News Report awarded our students
and staff the title of a Silver Medal School,
one of only five in Missouri. MSHSAA, Missouri
State High School Athletic Association, designated
Lindbergh as a state "Leadership School."
More great news arrived on the first days of school
as the staff and students were made aware that
our state testing scores ranked Lindbergh High
School as a "Top Ten School" in Math, Communication
Arts and Science. Additionally ACT scores
rose for the fifth year in a row.
2
All of the above academic
scores and awards are
possible because of the traditions
put into place by our
alumni. During your years
at Lindbergh, each of you
established a path that our
current students follow today.
As alumni, you should
be very proud of your
school as the students and staff continue to grow
and achieve because of your past efforts and present
support.
Congratulations and welcome back!
Dr. Ronald C. Helms
2009 Distinguished Educators
Lou Lunte
ou Lunte was born and raised in
L north St. Louis, graduating from
Beaumont High School in 1943. Lou
graduated from Washington University
in 1950 with a degree in liberal arts/
social science and was immediately
hired by the newly formed R8
(Lindbergh) School District to teach
science, math and civics.
Lou left Lindbergh in 1954 to teach in
Colorado, where he earned his
master’s degree, but returned to St.
Louis in 1957 after receiving a
fellowship to study physics at Wash U. for one year. In
the fall of 1958, he was rehired at Lindbergh where he
worked until he retired in 1983.
During his time at LHS, Lou mentored many new
teachers in addition to touching the lives of thousands
of students. The Spirit yearbook was dedicated to Lou
in 1965 and again in 1975, along with Herman Haeger
and Al Jaworski. Lou is one of only three individuals to
be honored in this way more than once.
The 1965 dedication read as follows, “For his
Robert Tobler
obert Tobler began teaching at
R LHS in 1956 and taught Instrumental
Music in the district before becoming
Director of Instrumental Music
in 1965. Mr. Tobler retired in 1998.
According to past students, Mr. Tobler
had the ability to instill a striving for excellence
in his students while making
every bit of it enjoyable. One recalls,
“His wonderful sense of humor made
me look forward to band class; there
was always something special about
the days when Mr. Tobler led the band.
On those days, the students would sit
up a little straighter and a certain excitement
would fill the air. Under his
guidance, we became the best band in the area. Mr.
Tobler taught me a love of music and always challenged
me to do my best. ‘Is this good enough’ is a
question that would never have been asked in his class
– only your best was acceptable. It was Mr. Tobler’s
influence that led to my becoming a teacher myself. He
was a teacher who truly enjoyed what he did and it was
evident every day to his students.”
participation in the affairs of both
Lindbergh High School and the
community, as an exceptional teacher
of social studies, biology and advanced
biology, as the sponsor of the Biology
Club, as an active member of the
Science Teachers’ Group, the past
president of the Lindbergh Community
Teachers’ Association, and an
enthusiastic and hard worker for the
Washington University Science Fair,
we, the yearbook staff are proud to
dedicate this 1965 Spirit to Mr. Louis
Lunte, a man who has unselfishly
dedicated himself, since 1952 to the
education of many Lindbergh students
who have had the privilege of associating with him.”
Students remember Lunte as a wonderful teacher who
turned kids on to science. One student remembers that
he was the only teacher who gave her a passing grade
despite her failure to do well on written tests due to a
reading disability. “He took my class participation into
account and knew that I understood what he was
teaching. I will always be grateful to Mr. Lunte for not
giving up on me.”
Lunte and his wife, Shirley, have five children and now
live in Nevada.
30 years.”
Another student remembers that when
the Jazz Band would play, Tobler would
just sit back and smile as though to say
“I am really enjoying this performance.”
He had a real bond with his band students.
Tobler’s influence on some students
began way before they ever entered
LHS, though. “When Mr. Tobler
came to our class in 5 th grade and
played that wha-wha on the trombone,
and all those comical sounds you hear
at the circus or in the background of a
cartoon, I just knew I had to play it. Not
only was it a great sound, but the way
he smiled and laughed, I knew I wanted
him to be my teacher. Mr. Tobler taught
me a skill that I have used for the last
Tobler also taught life lessons. “I learned a lot about
the music business, entertaining and not sweating the
small stuff from Mr. Tobler. He instilled in me an attitude
for which I will be forever grateful. Thanks, Mr.
Tobler, for your guidance, talent and friendship. I’m
richer because of you.”

Al Jaworski
A Touch of Class • Summer 2009
lois (Al) Jaworski was one of
A the teachers who worked at
LHS from the very beginning, celebrating
his 25 th year when the high
school celebrated its 25 th Anniversary
with the graduating class of
1975. He retired before the district’s
50 th anniversary, although he
continued to be an active member
of the Lindbergh family until his retirement
in 1993.
Jaworski earned both his BS and MS at Washington
University in St. Louis. At LHS, he taught PE,
driver’s ed, health, biology, world history and Missouri
history. To his students, Jaworski was known
as a strict disciplinarian and a teacher who really
wanted his teaching to make a difference in his students’
lives.
Jaworski also lent his coaching talents to the Varsity
track and sophomore basketball teams. During his
years as coach, both teams experienced much success.
Jaworski also sponsored the “Co-Pilots;” a
group of girls who kept time and measurements for
the track team.
Jaworski’s sophomore basketball
teams always had winning records
and he prepared this players well
before turning them over to Lou
Lorch or Don Bee, the Varsity Basketball
coaches. He coached the
class of ‘66 basketball team from 7 th
grade all the way through senior
year. Players say they never ever
would have gone to state without
him and describe him as “the best.”
His students and players recall Jaworski
as the kind of coach that
wouldn't let you quit. “He kept on you until you did
what needed to be done. He made you believe in
yourself.” Others recall him as a very dry, witty ,
wickedly funny guy who taught students and players
as much about life as anything else. As one former
student put it, “I learned a lot from Coach Jaworski
about dealing with the challenges in life. He called
things the way he saw them and you always knew
where you stood with him. You might not have liked
what he said, but if you thought about it, you understood
why he said it and learned from it.”
Alois Jaworski passed away after a valiant battle
with cancer in 2004 at the age of 76.
Frank Slachman '72
fter graduating from LHS in 1972, Frank
A Slachman attended Washington University
where he studied Chemical Engineering and graduated
in 1976. He then attended St. Louis University
for medical school, did his surgical residency at
Stanford, and did his cardiothoracic and transplant
training at the University of Washington. Dr.
Slachman has been in his current practice as a Cardiac
Surgeon for the last 17 years working a risky,
demanding and emergency-ridden job. High-risk
patients from southern and northern California are
referred to Slachman’s team. It’s not uncommon for
him to leave the hospital after 10 p.m., and after particularly
grueling surgeries, he doesn’t make it home
at all. Slachman averages seven heart surgeries a
week and operates on call for nearly half of his
weekends.
As for his personal accomplishments, Slachman
says he learned to work hard, and play hard. His
wife thinks he is crazy, because he loves to try anything
new and has dabbled in lots of things, including
auto road racing, becoming a pilot, scuba diving, big
Glenn Zimmerman '82
lenn Zimmerman is the Meteorologist for FOX 2
News in the Morning which begins at 5:00 a.m.
He has been forecasting weather on the morning show
since 1990. A St. Louis native, Glenn graduated from
Lindbergh High School in 1982. He has a degree in
Broadcast Journalism from Kansas State University,
and a degree in Meteorology from Saint Louis University.
When not forecasting, Glenn is into music. From his
trumpet and tuba playing days at LHS, to his guitar
playing of today. Glenn stays active in the music scene
in St. Louis. You can catch him out playing or sitting in
with other local groups, as well as his band The Bobbleheads.
He also incorporates music into his forecasts
with his “Weather Song of the Day.” Much to the dismay
of his wife Jill, he has an extensive CD collection
and Jill states that thank goodness for e-music, otherwise
they would need another wing on the house for all
the music.
Glenn is very generous in donating his time and talents;
playing auctioneer for many non-profits to help
them raise money. About half of Zimmerman’s calen-
game hunting
and
marlin fishing
to
name a
few. In recent
years,
Slachman
has been
more involved in cycling, running and mountaineering.
While his cycling is mostly recreational, he has
made numerous "Century Rides," and most of his
summers include a cycling tour in Europe. Slachman
has jogged about 10 marathons including those in
the major cities like Chicago, New York and Boston.
Frank claims he is not sure how the whole “mountain
climbing thing” got started as he swears he is afraid
of heights and hates cold weather! However, he was
invited to go on an Everest expedition in 2007 and
he went, never expecting to really make it to the top.
He got sick on the summit attempt and was unable
to make the entire climb. However, he signed up to
go again this year and ended up standing on the top
dar is devoted
to
such charity
work. He
also often
makes the
time to visit
schools to
talk about weather. His favorite question, usually from
a grade school student is, “HOW MUCH MONEY DO
YOU MAKE”
Glenn also coaches his children, Claire and Jack, in
baseball, softball and basketball, and is active with the
Boy Scouts as well. Glenn himself is an Eagle Scout.
Glenn’s parents still live in the Lindbergh District and
he has a brother in St. Louis, and a sister in Oklahoma.
While St. Louis was in the spot light winning the world
series in 2006, during the downtown parade, Fox 2’s
Glenn Zimmerman made sure he mentioned twice that
he graduated from LHS and also played in the (newly
started at the time) marching band.
Glenn has always been proud of his LHS roots.
Class of '79 Celebrates 30-year Reunion
he Lindbergh High School Class of 1979 30-
T Year Reunion was held Saturday, July 11 th at
the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet in the Versailles
Ballroom. We had a great time! Our DJ
played music from our era (Led Zeppelin, Steely
Dan, Peter Frampton, etc.) in addition to other party
songs. We reminisced, laughed, danced, drank,
dined and did our best to act 18 again! This time
however, we were of legal drinking age! A professional
photographer captured the reunion moments.
We are quite a handsome group as this class photo
proves. I will always remember the photo op ending
with the DJ cuing up the words “and I’m never going
back to my old school” by Steely Dan. That song will
forever remind
me of
our fabulous
30 th
reunion!
The happy
hour on
Friday
night at
Helen Fitzgerald’s
was
packed to the maximum. It was unbelievable seeing
all those familiar faces. Earlier that day a small
group of us went on a tour of our beloved Lindbergh.
Thank you to Mary Jane and Coach Bee! Sunday’s
picnic at Springdale was not canceled due to a major
storm! Instead, a courageous bunch of alumni
risked our lives (okay, I’m exaggerating a bit) to have
one last time to catch up with each other before calling
it a day. Mark Sullivan and I worked very hard
on this reunion and were very pleased (and proud)
with the success of this fabulous weekend of laughter,
memories, tears, and just plain FUN!!
Class of '89 Celebrates 20-year Reunion
T
he class of 1989 held its 20 year reunion on August
14, 15, and 16. The reunion kicked off on
Friday for an informal Happy Hour at O’Leary’s in
Sunset Hills. Not only did the night draw a large
crowd for the class of 1989 but there were quite a
few people from other LHS graduating classes as
well. A nice surprise to the evening! Saturday’s
more upscale event was held at
Moulin Events / Vin de Set which is located
downtown on Chouteau. It was a beautiful
location for a reunion. The 80’s music /
videos brought back a lot of memories as
classmates enjoyed dancing to their old
favorites. Most of all everyone enjoyed
catching up with old friends. What a wonderful
night! Sunday’s picnic was held in
Kirkwood Park and included friends and
family. It was a nice relaxing day that concluded
a fabulous weekend.

and left-handed
pitcher for the Oakland
his season prematurely
Outman had a 4-1
12 starts before he was sidelined by the surgery.
Recovery from this surgery usually runs 12 to 18
He played full time on the Buy-com
tour in 2001.
Gaus has won just about every local
tournament there is to win. He
has been named the Gateway
PGA "Player of the Year" four
times, and is working toward a fifth
honor for 2007.
He was a member of the 1998
U.S. PGA Cup Team, posting a 3-0-1 record. In
1998, he finished second in the National Club Pro
Chris Marziotti Tennis Scholarship Increased
T
he Chris Marziotti Tennis Scholarship was
established in 1985 to honor the
memory of Chris, a Lindbergh graduate
from the class of 1979, who died June,
1985 of leukemia; that disease having
been diagnosed in September, 1982 while
Chris was an engineering student at Tulane
University. While at Lindbergh, Chris
was a four-year Varsity Tennis player and
was the most valuable tennis player on
the team in his senior year. Chris and his
doubles partner went to state in both his
junior and senior years.
The annual award was to be given to an
outstanding college-bound senior tennis player on
either the boys’ or girls’ tennis team, the winner to
be selected by the tennis coaches. The first
award, a cash grant of $500 was made to Kimberly
Jacobs in 1987. The cash award continued
to be $500 through 2002, but in 2003, it
was raised to $750 and in 2006 to
$1,000.
The Scholarship Committee is pleased
to announce that beginning with the
May, 2010 presentation, two $1,000
scholarships will be awarded. The recipients
will be college-bound senior tennis
players, one from each of the boys’ and
girls’ Varsity Tennis Teams at Lindbergh
High School.
This doubling of the award has been
made possible by the generosity of private donors
to the fund since its inception in 1985. For further
Scholarship, please contact John Parres, Esq. at
WANTED: AUTOGRAPHED COPIES OF BOOKS WRITTEN BY
LHS ALUMNI AUTHORS.
Calling All LHS Alumni Authors
T
hanks to donations from LHS alumni and the
LHS Alumni Association, work will begin this
fall on alumni display cases to line the entryway of
Alumni Hall.
LHS Principal Ron Helms has designated the entire
first floor hall (that runs outside the “bubble office”)
“Alumni Hall.” It is there that the plaques
honoring those who have been recognized as Distinguished
Alumni are displayed, and pictures of
Distinguished Retired Educators will join them this
year. Members of the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame
will also be recognized there.
In addition, Dr. Helms has started the process of
hanging framed pictures of every graduating class
up and down the entire first floor hall. This is complicated
by the fact that for several years during
the 70’s and early 80’s, no group class pictures
were taken so a composite must be created from
individual senior pictures - quite a task!!
www.lindberghschools.ws/alumni
14
LHS Industrial Arts teacher David Blackwood
'90 and his class will design and begin construction
of the glass display cases this semester and
hope to have the project well on its way to completion
by December. (Donations are still being
sought for the safety-glass panels for the cases.)
When completed, the cases will showcase a rotating
display of LHS alumni memorabilia. One
shelf in the cases will be designated for a permanent
(and ever growing) collection of books authored
by LHS alumni. What an inspiration to
current aspiring authors at LHS!!
Hardly a day goes by that doesn’t bring news of
yet another LHS alum being published! If you are
a LHS alum and have published one or more
books, please send an autographed copy for display
in Alumni Hall. Send it to:
