New Products & Services (Cont’d) • LIBERTY SHIELD • A comprehensive national plan designed to increase protection for America’s citizens and infrastructure while maintaining the free flow of goods and people across our border with minimal disruption to our economy and way of life. • PROJECT 180 • A project targeting measurable improvements in security at the Liberty Shield sites during the first 180 days of DHS operations. This project will allow resources to be shifted from high intensity, low efficiency security measures as described above to security enhancements that are efficient and sustainable. • U.S. VISIT • United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (U.S. VISIT) program is the Department’s automated entry/exit system, which will expedite legitimate travelers, while making it more difficult for those intending to do us harm to enter our nation. New Products & Services (Cont’d) Project BioShield • DHS will work with HHS to accelerate the development and procurement of advanced vaccines and treatments for protection against biological, chemical and radiological threats. $5.6 billion advance appropriations for years FY2004 to FY 2013. $890 million is appropriated in FY 2004. • BioWatch • DHS early warning detection system of certain airborne biological releases, whether they are due to intentional releases or from the natural environment. • National Disaster Medical System: DHS is responsible for managing and coordinating the Federal response to major emergencies and federally declared disasters.
