Keyed by Kellie Nelson’s 19 points and Sam
Schuett’s career-high seven steals, the Bluejays
cruised past the Purple Aces, logging the largest winning
margin in a road game under Jim Flanery.
Nelson finished 8-for-9 from the field, while Schuett
added her team-leading fourth double-double of the
year with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Creighton
opened the game on a 13-4 run and never trailed in
the 26-point blowout. The Bluejays jumped out to a
25-10 lead and led 29-14 at the break, holding UE to
just 6-of-29 (.207) from the floor in the first half. While
the Jays struggled to find their outside shooting touch
– finishing with a season-low three-point field goal
percentage of .160 (4-25) – they made 22-of-36 (.611)
inside the arc. UE shot just 25.5 percent (13-51) in
the game, making only 13 field goals in defeat.
Kellie Nelson scored a career-high 24 points to lead
five Bluejays in double figures as Creighton crushed
the Salukis. Nelson's second-straight career-high
scoring game paced the way, as the Jays shot 56.9
percent from the field to win their fourth straight MVC
road game. Leading 14-13, the Jays ran off a 15-2
run to claim a 29-15 advantage with 8:36 to play in the
first half. The Bluejays would lead by as many as 16
in the first half and took a 40-26 lead into halftime after
shooting 62.5 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
After Kelsey Woodard made a pair of free
throws to start the second half for the Jays, SIU would
never get within 15 for the remainder of the contest.
Creighton's largest lead of the afternoon came when it
led by 27, up 66-39, with better than nine minutes to
play. Nelson poured in 15 of her career-best 24 points
in the first half, making all six of her first-half field goal
attempts. Megan Neuvirth added her second double-double
of the year with 10 points, 12 rebounds and
six assists.
Creighton 40 44 – – 84
Creighton made 34-of-48 free throws as Bradley was
whistled for 32 fouls and had three players foul out,
but the Bluejays could not overcome their worst shooting
performance of the year, making just 10 field goals
in a six-point loss to the Braves. BU jumped out to a
14-3 lead, but a 17-4 run by the Jays gave them a 22-
20 lead with 3:08 left in the opening half. The Braves
shot a pair of free-throws with less than one second to
play in the first half to take a 26-25 lead into the break.
The Jays shot an identical 5-for-22 from the field in
both halves to total the fewest field goals in a game
under Jim Flanery. Both Sam Schuett and Megan
Neuvirth were a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line,
but combined 3-for-12 from the field. The 34 free
throws and 48 attempts were the most by the Jays
since shooting 31-of-56 from the line against Wichita
State on Jan. 1, 2001.
