Creighton survived a scare from the last-place Purple
Aces, needing a pair of Chevelle Herring free-throws
with 18.2 seconds left to edge UE with their first onepoint
win since 2005. The Jays played without leading
scorer Megan Neuvirth in their lowest scoring
game in nearly 10 years. Creighton jumped out to a
14-2 lead, but both teams experienced field goal
droughts of better than eight minutes in the first half.
The Jays took a 19-15 lead into the half, while holding
UE to just five field goals and a 14.7 field goal percentage
in the first 20 minutes. The Jays led by as
many as nine in the second half, but UE took its first
lead of the game with 2:14 left. After Herring’s free
throws gave the Jays a 42-41 lead, CU blocked a
game-winning shot attempt with 3.5 seconds left and
escaped with a win when Meagan Collins’ game-winning
attempt at the buzzer rimmed out. Sam Schuett
scored a season-high 22 points and had 13 rebounds,
while Kellie Nelson added a career-high 12 boards.
Sonya Harris had career-highs with 23 points and six
assists to go along with 14 rebounds and three
blocked shots to lead Bradley to its first ever season
sweep of Creighton. The Bluejays owned a 33-30
halftime lead, closing the half on a 4-0 run. The first
half featured seven lead changes and six ties, before
the Braves took control of the game in the second
half. Creighton scored the first four points after halftime
to go up 37-30, but BU answered with a decisive
16-2 run, including a stretch of 12 straight points.
After out-rebounding BU in the first half, the Braves
out-worked the Jays on the glass 26-16 after halftime.
BU also shot a season-high 57.1 percent from threepoint
range. Megan Neuvirth led the Bluejays with 20
points before fouling out late. Sam Schuett had her
streak of 15 straight games scoring in double figures
come to an end, as she finished with nine points, but
led the team with 10 boards and four assists. Ten of
Harris’ 14 rebounds were on the offensive end.
Lizzie Boeck scored a career-high 24 points to lead
the Panthers to a 16-point win in a nationally televised
game on ESPNU. The win was UNI’s sixth straight
and snapped a five-game losing streak in the series
with Creighton, earning head coach Tanya Warren her
first win over her alma mater. After UNI scored the
first bucket of the game, the Bluejays answered with
the next five points. UNI then rattled off nine straight
points to take the lead for good. The Jays cut the lead
back to 14-13, before the Panthers used a 13-3 run to
take control of the game. UNI shot 56 percent from
the field in the opening half and out-rebounded the
Bluejays 21-10 through 20 minutes. The UNI duo of
Boeck and Jacqui Kalin equalled CU’s scoring total in
the first half, as Boeck had 17 points and seven
boards, while Kalin had 12 points in the opening stanza.
Chevelle Herring led the Bluejays with 17 points
in the game, becoming the third Bluejay of the season,
and 22nd in history to reach 1,000 career points.
