Despite a challeng<strong>in</strong>g economic climate, <strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Molecular</strong> <strong>and</strong> Cellular Biology is receiv<strong>in</strong>g support for many<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrious collaborative research projects, build<strong>in</strong>g bridges<br />

between departments, schools, <strong>and</strong> universities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

<strong>and</strong> abroad.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>herently collaborative, <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary enterprise, MCB rema<strong>in</strong>s an established hub <strong>of</strong> scientific research <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>life</strong><br />

<strong>sciences</strong> with its four departments—Biochemistry, Cell <strong>and</strong> Developmental Biology (CDB), Microbiology, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Molecular</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Integrative Physiology (MIP)—<strong>and</strong> affiliations with <strong>the</strong> Center for Biophysics <strong>and</strong> Computational Biology, <strong>the</strong> Program <strong>in</strong><br />

Neuroscience, <strong>the</strong> Medical Scholars Program, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute for Genomic Biology.<br />

As shown <strong>in</strong> this issue, much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific research done <strong>in</strong> MCB has medical applications. <strong>The</strong>re is a strong synergy<br />

between MCB <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e—fifteen MCB faculty have appo<strong>in</strong>tments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e. Two faculty<br />

Our faculty <strong>of</strong>ten divide affiliations, creat<strong>in</strong>g cross-poll<strong>in</strong>ation between MCB <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r units on campus—<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chemical Sciences, <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Integrative Biology, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Comparative Bio<strong>sciences</strong>.<br />

Moreover, our faculty rout<strong>in</strong>ely log discoveries <strong>and</strong> publish papers<br />

<strong>in</strong> cooperation with researchers at o<strong>the</strong>r U.S. universities, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally.<br />

This issue <strong>of</strong> MCB magaz<strong>in</strong>e is dedicated to provid<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
