Mission Statement
The Georgia Mock Trial Competition helps students gain an understanding of the legal system by
providing opportunities for school teams to participate in academic competitions where players assume
attorney and witness roles in a court case. Lawyers coach students in developing questioning, critical thinking
and oral advocacy skills.
Vision Statement
The Georgia Mock Trial Competition will impact participating students by improving their proficiency in
such basic skills as listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning. The program will also foster cooperation
among diverse groups of young people while promoting better communication and collaboration between the
educational and legal communities.
Highlights in the History of the
YLD High School Mock Trial Committee
Over the past 23 years, the High School Mock Trial Committee, the largest and most active of all the
YLD Committees, has grown into a nationally recognized educational program. During the 2010‐2011 Bar
Year, YLD President Michael Geoffroy appointed Ashley Palmer as chair of the High School Mock Trial
Committee. Jon Setzer and Deshala Dixon served as vice chairs. Justice George H. Carley serves as Special
Consultant to the committee. Stacy Rieke is the State Coordinator and Peggy Caldwell is the Assistant State
Coordinator.
The GHSMTC is made up of well over two thousand participants and volunteer from all areas in the
state. These participants and volunteers are students, teachers, attorney coaches, judging panel volunteers,
and other committee volunteers including problem writers, rules writers, and contest and Law Academy
organizers. The HSMTC serves over 1,400 high school students statewide annually. The duties of the
committee are subdivided into six areas: Rules, Problem, Teams, Competitions, Honors and Awards, and
Development. We also have a State Finals Planning Board, and a special Projects Task Force.
The mock trial program was founded under the YLS (the “Young Lawyers Division” was then known as the
“Younger Lawyers Section”) presidency of John C. Sammon (1987‐88), also a Past President of the State Bar of
Georgia. His successor as YLS President, Donna G. Barwick (1988‐89), gave full committee status to the high
school mock trial program. The Georgia Mock Trial Competition has produced four national championship
teams in 1995, 1999, 2007 and 2008. The state has also had the privilege of hosting the 1993 and 2009
National High School Mock Trial Championships in Atlanta. Below are highlights from the program’s history:

1987 ‐ The first state coordinator was Philip Newton, former social studies teacher at North Clayton
High School in Clayton County and the co‐chairs of the committee were Elizabeth Bloom Hodges (a
past YLD President) and Warner S. Fox.
1988 – The first statewide GHSMTC was held. Judge George Carley and Judge Harold Banke served as
the first presiding judges at the state tournament.
1989 ‐ Susan B. Devitt chaired the committee and the GHSMT became the largest YLD committee and
recipient of the President’s Award under former YLD President Dana B. Miles.
2
1991 ‐ Chair Joseph A. Roseborough led an even larger committee to greater success, creating the first
Summer Law Camp and receiving another President’s Award for Distinguished Service to the
Community under YLD President Stanley G. Brading.
1993 ‐ Under the leadership of committee chair Aimee R. Maxwell, Georgia hosted the National High
Administration Center in Lawrenceville.
1995 – The GHSMTC won the YLD President’s Award for Best Continuing Project under the leadership
of Cathy Cox Brakefield. Also in 1995, the team from South Gwinnett High School in Snellville won
Georgia’s first National Championship in Denver, CO. The team was featured in the nationally
broadcast special on Court TV.
1996 ‐ Under committee chair Julie Dampier Majer Culhane, the State Finals Competition was
expanded to include a semi‐final round.
1997 ‐ Under Catherine Hick’s term as chair, the GHSMTC celebrated its tenth anniversary and YLD
President Henry Walker honored the committee with the Tradition of Excellence Award, “in
recognition of a decade of continued commitment and service to Georgia’s youth.”
1998 – Under the leadership of H. Suzanne Smith the GHSMTC held its first Awards Banquet and the
first annual Law Academy at Mercer Law School in Macon. The committee also increased its work in
Development to diversify funding for the program.
1999 – During Rick Sager’s term as chair, Clarke Central High School in Athens won Georgia’s second
national title in St. Louis, MO. Continuing Legal Education Credit was extended to attorney coaches in
1999, as well.
2000 ‐ under the leadership of committee chair Roy Manoll, long‐time state coordinator Philip Newton
retired to pursue a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting and Stacy Rieke, former social studies teacher
at Riverdale High School in Clayton County, was hired to fill the position of state coordinator.
2001 ‐ Under the leadership of Jennifer B. Mann, the GHSMTC produced a unique teaching resource,
May It Please the Court, which is used by mock trial teams and in classrooms throughout the nation.
An accompanying 16‐minute motivational video by the same name was selected as one of four finalists
in the 2002 New York Film Festival and captured an Award of Distinction at the Communicators Awards
Ceremony in Arlington, Texas.
2002 ‐ Under the leadership of Christine S. Barker, the High School Mock Trial Committee created a
HSMTC’s Special Consultant, was elected to a position on the Board of Directors of the National High
School Mock Trial Championship.
2006 ‐ Under the leadership of Jason B. Thompson, the Board of Directors of the National High School
Mock Trial Championship, Inc. accepted the GHSTC bid to host the national tournament in Atlanta in
2009.
2007 ‐ During Tania Trumble’s term, Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro won Georgia’s third national
Georgia High School Mock Trial Committee Structure
Subcommittee on the Rules
This subcommittee assists in preparing the rules portion of the mock trial manual. The rules are
released to the teams via our website November 1. The rules of evidence governing the trials are simplified
from the Federal Rules of Evidence, retaining its organization and numbering system. This subcommittee also
handles the creation and interpretation of the rules of the Georgia Mock Trial Competition. After the rules are
published on the website on November 1, this subcommittee may be called upon to advise on clarifications of
the rules, issuing such memoranda periodically as needed during the mock trial training period.
Subcommittee on the Problem
This subcommittee assists in preparing the mock trial manual that is released via our website to the
teams in November. The case section contains the problem designed for competition on the regional and
state level. Civil and criminal fact patterns alternate on odd and even years, respectively. Those serving on
this subcommittee may not coach teams.
Subcommittee on Competitions
Regional coordinators and members of their coordinating teams make up this subcommittee’s
membership. It is responsible for seeing that competitions are properly staffed with enough judges and
attorney‐evaluators for all rounds. Evaluators and presiding judges for both the regional and state finals
competitions are also part of this subcommittee.
5
Subcommittee on the Teams
Almost all of the members of this subcommittee are attorney coaches. This subcommittee, in addition
to coaching local teams, also assists regional coordinators, when necessary in recruiting team coaches for all
schools needing help in this area. The number and location of attorneys required will be known by the
registration deadline.
Subcommittee on Honors and Awards
Created in 1999, this subcommittee devises methods for honoring outstanding teacher and attorney
coaches in each region. In 2000, the subcommittee began presenting the awards directly at the local level.
This subcommittee also handles the selection of the Supporter Appreciation Award and the Founders Award.
Subcommittee on Development
This subcommittee oversees the budget of the mock trial program and seeks ways to improve the
financial support of the project. Current goals include developing and implementing a plan designed to
provide a secure financial base for the future. The subcommittee assists the state champion team in securing
funds necessary to cover expenses involved in representing the state in the national competition and
supervises the production of the annual report.
State Finals Planning Board
Members are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the state finals: lodging, program, judging
panels, and publicity. The State Finals are usually held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in
Lawrenceville in mid‐March each year.
Special Projects Task Force
This unit was established in 1990, when it began working on the design of a special summer law camp
program for high school students. In 1998, the task force developed the annual Law Academy to replace the
Summer Law Camp. This Academy offers a weekend of intense study in mock trial rules, procedures and trial
preparation for student team leaders from around the state. Also, in 1998, a Court Artist Contest was
launched statewide, co‐sponsored by the Savannah College of Art & Design. The contest was named for its
founder, Craig Harding, after his death in an automobile accident following graduation from the Savannah
College of Art & Design. A statewide Journalism Contest was added in 2002 but was eliminated in 2009.
Message from the Chair
It is my privilege to pen this message as your 2010‐2011 Chair of the
Georgia High School Mock Trial Competition. Since 1988, the Georgia High
School Mock Trial Program has been one of the strongest programs sponsored
by the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia, and this year has
been no exception. Our season began with the annual Law Academy, a fourday
program for which students traveled to Athens, Georgia to participate. At
the conclusion of the program, the student bar examination was administered
to the Law Academy participants. Seventeen students passed the exam with
scores that gained them admission to the Georgia Student Bar Association; five
of the students were admitted with honors.
Ashley Moore Palmer is an
attorney in the Clayton County
Public Defender’s Office in
Jonesboro. She has volunteered
with the GHSMTC in many
different capacities since 2006.
This season, 105 teams participated in sixteen regional competitions
statewide. The teams were comprised of almost 1,500 students who hailed
from public and private schools and home school programs. The 16 teams that
prevailed at regionals were joined at the State competition by two wildcard
teams. At the end of four highly competitive and well fought rounds, Henry W.
Grady High School was named State Champion. Henry W. Grady represented
Georgia well at the National High School Competition held in Phoenix, Arizona
over Mother’s Day weekend, bringing home a 4 th place title.
Congratulations are due not only to Grady, but also to Norris Johnson
from Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, who earned the title of State Champion in the Craig Harding
Memorial Court Artist Contest, and Middle Georgia Christian Homeschool Association in Macon, who won the
2011 Professionalism Award, sponsored by the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism.
At the conclusion of last year, I learned that I would be elevated from 1 st Vice Chair to Chair of the
Georgia High School Mock Trial Competition, despite my having only served in the former position for
approximately six months. After two years as Regional Coordinator of HSMT Region 3 (Atlanta), and a year as
2 nd Vice Chair (which was punctuated by my becoming a new mom), I had barely settled into the position of 1 st
Vice Chair before I was unexpectedly catapulted to Chair, and quite candidly, I hoped that I was up to the task.
Thankfully, I was, and that was due in no small part to all those who make this program such a success. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all those individuals who give of their time to make this program
so successful: the students, teacher coaches, attorney coaches, parents, regional coordinators, evaluators,
presiding judges, and members of the High School Mock Trial Committee. The work that you do gives
students from all walks of life an opportunity to positively experience the legal system, and in the process, the
students gain invaluable academic and presentation skills that will serve them well, whether they pursue a
career in the legal profession or a dream of a different nature.
To the Young Lawyers Division, under the leadership of 2010‐2011 President Michael Geoffroy, the
State Bar of Georgia, the Counsel of State Court Judges, and all others who have generously supported us
throughout this season by giving of your time and financial resources – we say thank you! High School Mock
Trial, like all other non‐profit programs, relies on the generosity of donors. Especially in these difficult
economic times, please know how sincerely we appreciate your gifts, as they are vital to the life of this
program.
12
Last, but certainly not least, I want to sincerely thank Stacy Rieke, our State Mock Trial Coordinator,
Peggy Caldwell, our Assistant State Mock Trial Coordinator, and Presiding Justice George Carley, who make
this program so exceptional. I am forever grateful for their leadership and support and am truly indebted to
them for their assistance this season. Without their tireless dedication to this program and the students it
serves, the outstanding program that we know simply would not be.
It has truly been an honor and pleasure to serve as the 2010‐2011 Chair of the Georgia High School
Mock Trial Competition. I now pass the gavel to Jon Setzer who will serve as Chair for the 2011‐2012 season.
After working with Jon this season, I have no doubt that the program is in great hands!
Congratulations to all on a wonderful season and best of luck in the upcoming season!
Very truly yours,
Henry W. Grady Mock Trial Team with Senator Saxby Chambliss in April 2011
2011 Regional Coordinating Teams
The position of the regional coordinating team within the GHSMTC is an extremely important
and indispensable one. It is at the regional level that the greatest number of students, teachers and
attorneys participate in the mock trial program. Each year our regional coordinating teams thoroughly
prepare for the regional competition day by carefully planning for the event over the months
preceding the beginning of the rounds.
On competition day, teachers, students and parents receive an outstanding impression of how
well the GHSMTC and local legal communities statewide can organize and run a competitive event
crowning weeks of study and practice. It is during the regional level of competition that the legal
profession truly puts its best foot forward: all forces on our coordinating teams work well together,
and each and every step of the day shows our participants the professionalism, skill, and cool‐headed
order which is the highest ideal of our justice system because anything less would do a disservice to
the countless hours of investment by our program’s participants. The integrity of the GHSMTC relies
upon the polished and unblemished management of the regional competition day statewide and our
coordinating teams meet this challenge each season with orderliness, enthusiasm and a knack for
creating an incomparable educational experience.
Grady Team Places 4 th at Nationals
Following five weeks of intense preparation this spring, the mock trial team from Henry W.
Grady High School in Atlanta represented the state of Georgia in the 28 th annual National High School
Mock Trial Championship, held over Mother’s day weekend in Phoenix, Arizona.
The national case this year was a civil problem wherein the plaintiff, the D’Baha Indian Tribe,
claimed that a planned mine expansion by the Intrepid Mining Corporation (the Defendant) was a
breach of contract in that the project would taint the tribe’s sacred water and injure wildlife on the
Tribal Lands. The tribe’s second claim was for nuisance in that the mine’s expansion interfered with
the public health, safety, peace, comfort of convenience of the tribe and impaired the tribe’s
enjoyment of its rights in and to the Tribal Lands. Intrepid denied that the proposed expansion of the
Harrelson Mine was a breach of the sublease or a nuisance. Intrepid claimed it had obtained all
necessary permits and approvals for the expansion and that the tribe waived Intrepid’s strict
compliance with the terms of the sublease. Intrepid also contended that the tribe’s opposition to the
expansion was motivated by its desire to build a water park and resort in place of the Harrelson Mine
and not by its desire to protect its sacred water.
During the preliminary rounds of the national tournament, the Georgia team competed against
New Hampshire and won. They competed against Idaho in the 2nd round and won, then faced
Kentucky in the 3rd round and lost and finally Delaware in the 4th round and won. The Grady team
ultimately ended the tournament weekend with a 3‐1 record – 3 wins, 1 loss, earning 10 winning
ballots out of 12 and 1,131 total points. The team placed 4 th in a field of 48 teams from across the U.S.,
Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, South Korea and Australia. The teams from Indiana and
Missouri advanced to the championship round and the team from the John Adams High School in
South Bend, Indiana won the 2011 national title.
Craig Harding Memorial Court Artist Contest
The Craig Harding Memorial Court Artist Contest, sponsored by the Savannah College of Art and
Design, allows artistically talented students from schools participating in the mock trial competition an
opportunity to participate in the program. Court artists sketch scenes from the first two rounds of the
regional competition in which their schools are participating. The best two sketches are submitted to
the judges at the conclusion of the championship round. Sketches must be black‐and‐white, and any
dry medium is acceptable. Professors Don Rogers and Mohamed Danawi from SCAD evaluate the
entries and select the regional and state champions and the state winner is invited to accompany the
new state champion mock trial team to the national tournament. If the state champion is unable to
attend the tournament, the state finalist is invited to accompany the team to nationals. Julie Culhane
2011 Julie Jobe Award for Excellence in Mock Trial
Region 8 (Jonesboro)
The 2011 Julie Jobe Award was presented to Cedric
Colbert in memory of his daughter Ayana Colbert a member of
the Jonesboro High Mock Trial Team who passed away in April of
2010. Ayana’s flair for drama helped her to become a superb
cross examination attorney. Coming from a single parent home,
Ayana watched her younger sister in the evening s while her
father went to work, yet she was able to put in the time
necessary to write and practice her questions, call her witness
after practice to discuss necessary changes and perfect her
opening statement. Even though Jonesboro was not the state
Ayana Colbert champion in 2010, she read the national case on the same
evening it was published on the website. One of Ayana’s most
important qualities was how well she mixed with the other
students. During each practice she went out of her way to speak individually to each of her teammates
and coaches. She was universally loved by her teammates and coaches. She was even very well liked
by her opponents. At her funeral there were several arrangements from teams Ayana has competed
against and some of those opponents’ coaches were at the funeral to support her teammates and
coaches. Ayana was a spirited young lady who loved her high school and all those around her. She will
be missed.
The Julie Jobe Award was
established in 2000, when the Riverdale High
School Mock Trial Team lost Julie Jobe, one of
its team members, to leukemia in 1999. Julie
attended the first Law Academy and what a
charter member of the Georgia High School
Student Bar Association. She also collected
numerous honors as an outstanding attorney.
Her parents, the team and then regional
coordinator Donna Sims, in conjunction with
the Clayton County Public Schools Secondary
Social Studies Coordinator Robynn Greer
Holland, created this special award called the
“Julie Jobe Award for Excellence in Mock
Trial.” Each year an honoree is chosen from
all student participants in Region 8
member of a group called The Forum, which discusses pertinent issues to young adults, and he is an
active member of the Ultimate Frisbee Team and the Junior Varsity Soccer Team. Next fall Arsalan will
be attending New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to study drama. His creativity, kind words,
and dauntless enthusiasm will be missed though we expect great things from him at NYU!
showed mastery over his speech and the case material. Anton is also a member of the JAMBO group,
which raises money for an orphanage in Kenya. Anton is also a member of the Ultimate Frisbee Team
and the Junior Varsity Soccer Team. Next year Anton will attend Georgia Institute of Technology.
Fortunately, Anton has volunteered to continue to help with the team. We wish him the best of luck in
his future endeavors!
James Forde (Atlanta International School) has been a member of the
Atlanta International School’s Mock Trial Team for three years. This year he and
two of his peers served the team as co‐captains. Mock Trial has truly allowed
James’s critical thinking and oral presentation skills to shine. As a co‐captain,
James practiced intensely and was always on hand to offer ideas for the team’s
improvement. He particularly pushed himself to deliver his closing in the most
compelling, engaging manner possible, which required many hours of practice. In
addition, he performed direct and cross examinations of crucial witnesses in the case. He handled
objections and difficult witnesses with intelligence and ease. His humor and leadership will be greatly
missed! James is also a member of the Ultimate Frisbee Team and the Junior Varsity Soccer Team. In
the fall, James will return to his to his home country of England to attend University of East Anglia to
study History and International Relations. We wish James the best of luck next year.
Andrew Wooster (Atlanta International School) has been a member
of the Atlanta International School’s Mock Trial Team for four years. Starting
as a time keeper, Andrew eventually served as the team’s captain this year.
For the last few years, Andrew has both opened and closed cases. He is always
the master of the rules of evidence. He has developed excellent critical, quick
thinking skills and has become an engaging presenter. Always respectful of his
team mates, Andrew led the team with grace and high expectations. He
performed direct and cross 37 examinations of key witnesses in the case.39
Without a doubt, Andrew has been a dedicated and important member of the team and has been
instrumental in its success. At AIS, Andrew is also a member of the Ultimate Frisbee Team and was a
member of Model United Nations. Last year Andrew was the recipient of the Mock Trial Award. Next
year Andrew will attend Georgetown School of Foreign Service. We are very proud of Andrew and
know he will be a very successful young man.
Matthew Welch (The Galloway School) has been a member of The
Galloway School’s mock trial team for all three of its years at competition. He
has played his part as a witness twice and ended his stint on mock trial as a
witness coach. Outside mock trial he enjoys theater. He plans to spend the
next four years studying theater at Boston University. He believes that theater
and mock trial, and law for that matter, go hand‐in‐hand very well.
Kellie Fields (Camden County High School) has played the
role of attorney for three years on the Camden County High School
mock trial team. She attended Law Academy and became a
member of the Student Bar with Honors. She was voted by her
team their “Most Selfless Member.” She was a member and vice
president of Beta. Kellie graduated with honors and will attend
Georgia College and State University,
Seantyel Hardy (Camden County High School) has been on
the Camden County mock trial team for one year, during which
time she received an Outstanding Attorney Award at the regional
competition. She is a honor graduate and a member of Beta. She
will attend Vanderbilt University in the fall.
Adam Wharton (Camden County High School) has been a
member of the Camden County High School mock trial team for
two years serving as a timekeeper and a witness. He received an
Outstanding Witness Award at the regional competition. Adam will
enter the military after graduation.
Alexis Brown (Southwest High School) was awarded Outstanding
Witnesses Awards in both preliminary rounds at the regional competition. She
plans to attend college ad has received numerous awards for her art work.
Brendan Walker (Southwest High School) was awarded an Outstanding
Outstanding Attorney Coaches for 2011
The descriptions of outstanding coaches are taken from the letters submitted to support their
nomination for this award.
Ernie Harris
Athens Academy
Region 2 ‐ Athens
Ernie Harris has been an attorney coach for Athens Academy for over a
decade and during that time the team has won several regional champion
titles. Ernie has the ability to “balance encouragement with standards of
excellence. His criticism is always constructive and never harsh, but accurate
and beneficial.” He approaches mock trial with “contagious enthusiasm and fervor.” Ernie is admired
for “his competence, his dedication, and his professionalism.”
Dennis Keene
Savannah Country Day School
Region 14 ‐ Savannah
Out of the past ten years Dennis Keene has been an attorney coach for
Athens Academy (Athens), his team has won seven regional championship
titles. Dennis is “dedicated, honorable, a good role model and the coolest
customer I’ve ever met, and I’ve never seen him rattled,” states Athens
Academy’s teacher coach. Dennis has “a quiet confidence and a sense that
the hard work we are doing, the lessons we are learning in practice were far more important than the
competition.” He recognizes and highlights each student’s individual strengths. “Dennis Keene’s
contributions to Mock Trial can be read in the bright glint of excitement in students’ eyes, the ever
increasing numbers of alumni who foresee a career for themselves in the law, and in his many, many
colleagues who know tell him: Thank You.”
Paul A Dietrick
Northview High School
Region 3 – Atlanta
Paul Dietrick was one on the founders of the mock trial program at
Northview High School (Atlanta). As the attorney coach for the past six years,
Paul has let the team to 4 regional runner‐up titles in a highly competition
region. The team during that time has received 18 Outstanding Attorney
Awards and 12 Outstanding Witness Awards. Paul Dietrick “had not just aided students in the
development of their knowledge of the law, but in the development of their character as young
adults.” He has the “unique ability to lead and teach the group while allowing the responsibility for
success to rest precisely where it ought – with the students.” HE is a mentor to his students. He
“guides them but allows them to gain the satisfaction of doing their own work. He instills team spirit in
each student.” Paul teaches students to “think critically, to build a bullet‐proof case strategy and to
present their thoughts and ideas with conviction and poise.
Outstanding Teacher Coaches for 2011
The descriptions of outstanding coaches are taken from the letters submitted to support
their nomination for this award.
Michael Nixon
Walton High School
Region 11 – Marietta
As a teacher coach, Michael Nixon, began the mock trial program at
Walton High School (Marietta) in the 2002‐2003 school year and has
continued to coach the team to the present. During his nine y ear tenure,
Walton High School has been the regional champion five times, the team’s
success partly due to the “energy, enthusiasm, and commitment of Michael Nixon to the program and
to his students.” According to one team member, Michael is an “incredible mentor – hard‐working,
reliable and patient. He is genuinely concerned about his students and will go out of his way to help
them with anything, be it mock trial, school work or stress management.” Team members also state
that “for his tireless dedication, supreme empathy, and wise advice, Mr. Nixon commands my highest
respect and admiration” and that “with the help of Mr. Nixon’s coaching, I found confidence within
myself I never knew existed, a drive to work hard and achieve goals. I never imagined achieving, and,
most of all, a passion for the art of argumentation and law.” “I have learned that I can do anything I set
my mind to, no matter how great the challenge.”
Amy Payne
Union County High School
Region 6 – Dalton
Amy Payne has been a teacher coach for the past nine years. She began
her mock trial career in 2003 at Fannin County High School (Blue Ridge)
where she started the mock trial program. In the two years she coached at
Fannin County, the team was runner‐up in the regional competition both
years. Amy then took a teaching position at Union County High School (Blairsville) and in 2006 began
the mock trial program here as well. In the seven years she has coached at Union County, the team
was selected as the Northern Wildcard in 2009 and the Region 6 Champion in 2010 and 2011. Amy is
an “organizer and motivator of young adults.” She has “remarkable insight into each student’s
potential and a unique ability to connect with students and really teach them.” Amy ahs a “special gift
that brings out the best the students have to offer.” One of her team members states that from Mrs.
Payne “I have learned that hard work and dedication will take me anywhere I want to go in life.”
Another team member sums it up by writing “Mrs. Payne is selfless, putting the team before herself in
every situation, sacrificing hours of her time to go above and beyond what is expected.”
“Thank You” to Court Facilities for Their Support
In order to give students participating in the mock trial program a more realistic experience,
teams are encouraged to practice and regional coordinators to hold competitions in actual
Attorney Coach Opportunities for the 2012 Mock Trial Season
Attorney Coaches may receive CLE credit!
Each year, the mock trial office receives numerous requests from teams across the state for
attorneys who have volunteered to assist in coaching teams. If you are an attorney, your expertise can
be invaluable to a team. From the finer points of delivering a closing argument to the rules of
evidence, teams need attorneys who are willing to coach them through the legal—and ethical—
aspects of trial preparation. A minimum investment of at least 10 hours is asked of each volunteer
attorney coach. Judging or evaluating a round or two and providing feedback at your local regional or
at the state finals competition will also make a positive impact on the overall program. Please contact
the mock trial office (using the form provided on the next page) before 1 November if you are
interested in coaching.
Judging Panel Volunteer Opportunities for the 2012 Season
Regional coordinators in all sixteen regions around the state will be in need of enthusiastic and
well‐prepared judging panel volunteers for the regional level of competition the first two weekends in
February. Additionally, veteran HSMT judging panel volunteers are invited to join us for an exciting
state finals competition in Lawrenceville over the third weekend in March. If you’re interested in
volunteering to serve on a judging panel, please contact the mock trial office before 1 November.
