2011 Julie Jobe Award for Excellence in Mock Trial
Region 8 (Jonesboro)
The 2011 Julie Jobe Award was presented to Cedric
Colbert in memory of his daughter Ayana Colbert a member of
the Jonesboro High Mock Trial Team who passed away in April of
2010. Ayana’s flair for drama helped her to become a superb
cross examination attorney. Coming from a single parent home,
Ayana watched her younger sister in the evening s while her
father went to work, yet she was able to put in the time
necessary to write and practice her questions, call her witness
after practice to discuss necessary changes and perfect her
opening statement. Even though Jonesboro was not the state
Ayana Colbert champion in 2010, she read the national case on the same
evening it was published on the website. One of Ayana’s most
important qualities was how well she mixed with the other
students. During each practice she went out of her way to speak individually to each of her teammates
and coaches. She was universally loved by her teammates and coaches. She was even very well liked
by her opponents. At her funeral there were several arrangements from teams Ayana has competed
against and some of those opponents’ coaches were at the funeral to support her teammates and
coaches. Ayana was a spirited young lady who loved her high school and all those around her. She will
be missed.
The Julie Jobe Award was
established in 2000, when the Riverdale High
School Mock Trial Team lost Julie Jobe, one of
its team members, to leukemia in 1999. Julie
attended the first Law Academy and what a
charter member of the Georgia High School
Student Bar Association. She also collected
numerous honors as an outstanding attorney.
Her parents, the team and then regional
coordinator Donna Sims, in conjunction with
the Clayton County Public Schools Secondary
Social Studies Coordinator Robynn Greer
Holland, created this special award called the
“Julie Jobe Award for Excellence in Mock
Trial.” Each year an honoree is chosen from
all student participants in Region 8
(Jonesboro).
