Meet the Trust’s
BSTP Change Lead, Valerie Clarke
What is your role
To ensure that staff are prepared for the
changes taking place under the Business
Services Transformation Programme
(BSTP). This major modernisation of
corporate services throughout the HSC
regionally will affect every member of staff.
The introduction of new automated Finance
and Human Resources systems means that we will
be using new web based systems to complete many
routine tasks like ordering goods, applying for leave
and claiming travel.
What is the biggest challenge in your
job
The Project Board has been preparing for this
mammoth task for months. We need to ensure that
systems are in place, staff understand what they
need to do, are trained and have access to PCs to be
ready for ‘go live.’
What gives you the most job
satisfaction To know that I am part of one of the
biggest changes in health and social care in years.
We will be going live with Finance Systems in early
2013, followed by Human Resources and Payroll in
Summer/Autumn 2013. Hopefully it will be satisfying
when staff see the advantages e.g. reduction of
manual systems; ability to
Transforming Business Services
A ‘Change Network’ has been set up to help
implement the Business Services Transformation
Project (BSTP). Each Directorate has a representative
on the Network to update you on progress and ensure
we are ready for the introduction of new web based
finance systems in December followed by Human
Resources in Spring.
Heather Ellis, Head of Education,
Learning and Development is
leading the Training Strategy to
minimise service disruption and
prepare staff for this major change.
Latest details on training on the
new Finance and HR systems are
on the home page of the intranet under Business
Services Transformation Project.
Richard O’Grady is ensuring that
we have the hardware, software
and skills so that we are ready
for the changes under BSTP. He
is making sure that all staff have
the IT skills needed and PCs are
available for those who do not
have individual Desktops. These will be allocated
in central locations to allow staff open access.
The Trust Change Network
Year McAlinden for the Trust Charity of
the Year 2013. This is the first
year of what we hope will be an
annual initiative under Trust in
Community. Nominations were submitted early this
month and the top five that meet our criteria will
go forward for staff to vote for the charity that they
feel we should support as an organisation.
Child Protection
The Child Protection Nurse Specialist Team offers an
open door to all Registered Nurses and Midwives,
advising and supporting on safeguarding issues.
The team helps nursing staff to identify children and
families in need of support or protection; advises on
how to help families to cope with difficulties affecting
safety and wellbeing; and signposts to appropriate
services. The Nursing Policy and Procedures for
Safeguarding Children and Young People is available
on the intranet under Governance: Nursing and
Midwifery. For further information contact: Anne
weekends will reduce the bill to £15 a year.
Turn your monitor off if you are away
Meet the Trust’s
Practice Education Team
Who is in the Team
A Practice Education Coordinator, seven
Practice Education Facilitators and a
secretary work across every Service
Directorate. The team is made up of
nurses and midwives who are part
of the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery
Governance Team and they report to Lynn n
Fee, Assistant Director Nursing Workforce
Development & Training.
Role of the Team
The team’s key role is to implement the regulatory
Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards to
support learning and assessment in practice (2008).
The team does this by providing professional support
and facilitation to mentors, practice teachers, ward
sisters, charge nurses and team leaders. The team
also participates in key Directorate workstreams
and works in partnership with Approved Education
clinical supervision. In addition, the team
has successfully introduced a web-based
Challenges
The implementation of the new under
graduate nursing curriculum from September
2012 and the support needed for mentors will
be the focus in the coming months. The team
recognises the challenge of increasing awareness
of the vital contribution that mentors fulfil when
assessing student nurses to meet the regulatory
requirements. The Team is mindful of the imminent
changes in practice as a result of the implementation
of Transforming Your Care and the support it will
provide to clinical colleagues and mentors.
Achievements
Achievements include increasing the number of
mentors and sign off mentors trained; increasing
the support provided to ward sisters, charge nurses
and team leaders; and the implementation of clear
structures, systems and processes to support
and develop mentors. This includes developing
the knowledge and skills of mentors regarding
all aspects of the mentorship role through a wide
