Meet the Trust’s
Practice Education Team
Who is in the Team
A Practice Education Coordinator, seven
Practice Education Facilitators and a
secretary work across every Service
Directorate. The team is made up of
nurses and midwives who are part
of the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery
Governance Team and they report to Lynn n
Fee, Assistant Director Nursing Workforce
Development & Training.
Role of the Team
The team’s key role is to implement the regulatory
Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards to
support learning and assessment in practice (2008).
The team does this by providing professional support
and facilitation to mentors, practice teachers, ward
sisters, charge nurses and team leaders. The team
also participates in key Directorate workstreams
and works in partnership with Approved Education
Institutions, other Trusts and the DHSSPSNI.

clinical supervision. In addition, the team
has successfully introduced a web-based
mentor register (Easy Information
Management System) to provide
assurance to the NMC.
Challenges
The implementation of the new under
graduate nursing curriculum from September
2012 and the support needed for mentors will
be the focus in the coming months. The team
recognises the challenge of increasing awareness
of the vital contribution that mentors fulfil when
assessing student nurses to meet the regulatory
requirements. The Team is mindful of the imminent
changes in practice as a result of the implementation
of Transforming Your Care and the support it will
provide to clinical colleagues and mentors.
Achievements
Achievements include increasing the number of
mentors and sign off mentors trained; increasing
the support provided to ward sisters, charge nurses
and team leaders; and the implementation of clear
structures, systems and processes to support
and develop mentors. This includes developing
the knowledge and skills of mentors regarding
all aspects of the mentorship role through a wide
range of teaching strategies, including the use of
