I’ll be booking cinema tickets for the Girl Who Played With Fire – see our interview with lead Swedish actress Noomi Rapace on p29 –
and I’ll also be checking out some of the new releases our Film Editor Drew recommends on p11.
Comedy season is back, with Shappi Khorsandi, Dara O’Briain and Sean Lock all appearing at the Lighthouse over the next couple of
months, and you can win tickets to see Rhod Gilbert on p35.
Festival season is still in full-swing. Don’t miss Listed favourites b-side in Weymouth (p38) and Inside Out at iconic venues across
Mary Shelley
Festival 01-03
In a three-day festival this October,
writers, artists and performers will
celebrate the life of Mary Shelley, the
author of Frankenstein, who is buried in
St Peter’s Church, Bournemouth along
with the heart of her poet husband,
Percy.
The Mary Shelley Festival aims to shed
essential light on Bournemouth’s history
and literary heritage, as well as inspiring
community projects. Shelley’s most
famous novel, Frankenstein, was written
whilst on holiday in Geneva when she
was only 18. However, little is known
about her personal life and other novels,
along with her close relationship with
poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her interest
in natural science and philosophy was
instilled in her from a young age by her
parents, William Godwin and women’s
rights campaigner, Mary Wollstonecraft.
This festival takes place at the
Bournemouth Natural Science Society
from 01 to 03 October, and is part of the
Bournemouth bi-centennial celebrations.
It celebrates all aspects of Mary’s
contribution to writing, and begins and
ends with several ‘Marys’ engaging with
pub visitors at the Mary Shelley Pub
with storyteller and performer Michele
O’Brien. The full line-up is as follows:
FrIdaY 01 oCToBEr:
Opening Night; tragedies and
scandals that beset Mary’s life. Through
storytelling and dramatic performance,
we understand Mary’s thoughts on
more.
Afternoon (times to be confirmed):
Performers tell the story of Mary in the
then lead visitors to Mary Shelley’s tomb
where an actor playing Percy Shelley will
be reading poems.
Restaurant Review
Patrick’s
Locally sourced seasonal food, generous portions and
chic surroundings make dinner at patrick’s in ashley
Cross a real delight! Listed’s Clare Sellar tells you more…
At Patrick’s Restaurant and Bar, in Ashley
Cross, they have just celebrated their
4th birthday; but you’d be forgiven for
thinking it’s always been there. The
converted bank building provides the
perfect setting for such a hearty brasserie
as this. Its high ceilings, original features
and smart, restrained decor make
Patrick’s a chic choice for breakfast, lunch
or dinner, and they also provide outside
catering for your party or picnic.
We navigated the inviting menu, and
full specials board, with the help of
some velvety smooth house red wine,
and nibbled on homemade bread while
waiting for our starters. Chris Howard,
head chef at Patrick’s since the beginning,
strives to create his menu using seasonal,
locally available ingredients. The pot
of Dorset Crab in coriander and lime
mayonnaise was fresh and zingy, the
duck pate with red onion jam was
rich and tasty, and both were perfectly
proportioned.
The main course menu has a great
balance of meat, fish and vegetarian
options, put together in original and
exciting ways. My partner had the BBQ
spiced lamb rump with minted couscous
and tomato salsa; lamb being his
favourite meat. It was deliciously tender,
and a generous portion size. The minted
couscous was a great accompaniment to
the BBQ flavours, and made this a great
summer dish.
I had the seasonal roast duck breast
Listed
Loves
with a potato and herb gallette and
beetroot jus, which again was beautifully
cooked. I had a hard time choosing
between that, the monkfish tempura and
the whole roasted sea bass, but I was
more than happy with my choice.
After the rich food and wine there
wasn’t a lot of room for dessert, but the
Snickerbocker Glory was hard to resist;
and is perfect for sharing after all.
With live music on Thursdays, DJs at
the weekend, outside catering, breakfast
and lots of deals to be had, one visit just
wasn’t enough to sample everything that
Patrick’s has to offer. I’ll be sure to visit
again soon.
Alice (Milla Jovovich) is back... and
bringing a few of her friends. Or so the
tagline reads, though it should actually be
asking if we really care anymore. Considering
that the last three films have ONLY been fairly
well received and not exactly got people
queuing for hours to get in, it was really only
a matter of time before something like this
jumped on the 3D bandwagon to reignite its
franchise. OK, there may have been the odd bit
every-so-often in the others that was worth a
watch, but even though this has been filmed
using James Cameron’s “Fusion” Technology
(from Avatar) and shot in various locations
around the world, I doubt that the prospect of
seeing the same old stuff in 3D will be enough
to tempt sceptics into trying it out. Get to the
money! Released September 10th.
Bringing back his character in this Planet Terror spin-off, Robert Rodriguez brings us his second action-packed film in as
many months. Danny Trejo is an ex-Federale who is betrayed by the organisation that hired him, which leads him to go on
a brutal and bloody rampage of revenge. Considering that Machete comes from Rodriguez’s own Troublemaker Studios
and smacks of his own style of films like Desperado, you can definitely expect Machete to have all the style and swagger
that Rodriguez is capable of delivering. There’s also talks of a trilogy coming to fruition if this is well received which, fingers
crossed, could also lead to Sin City 2? We can hope... Released September 10th.
Ben Affleck directs AND plays the lead of Doug MacRay, a thief planning his next job whilst finding himself in a deepening
relationship with Claire (Rebecca Hall), a bank teller traumatised by a heist that Doug is connected to, whilst avoiding the FBI
investigator (Jon Hamm) who is close to unmasking Doug’s identity whilst wrestling with the feelings he also has for Claire. It
does all sound a little tragic, which is normally Ben Affleck’s forte, but The Town does see Affleck taking the step from celebrity
to film-maker and therefore giving his name that much more credibility in the film industry. If this film takes off, it could be in
the running for Oscar Nominations as well, so watch out for those! Released September 17th.
ThE amErICaN (15) (dIr. aNToN CorBIJIN)
George Clooney stars in this rather non-American cast as an assassin who hides out in an Italian village waiting for what
could be his last ever assignment. Whilst hiding out, he tempts fate by befriending the local preist (Paolo Bonacelli) as well as
the affection of Clara (Violante Placido). Clooney has had a run of very deep and engaging films over the last few years, so if
those are anything to go by then this will definitely be worth seeking out. Released September 17th.
Eoin Colfer
when the artemis Fowl series came flying onto the children’s book scene back in 2001 it was
dubbed by one reviewer as ‘die hard with fairies’. Listed’s Jenny ross caught up with its author,
Eoin Colfer, to get the low-down on his latest novel, ‘The atlantis Complex’
The series follows the exploits of teenage
genius and anti-hero, Artemis Fowl,
and the fairy inhabitants of the Lower
Elements – the human-free sanctuary
buried deep beneath the surface of the
Earth.
“You can expect the usual blend of
action, comedy and magic but with
a brand new story and a few new
characters. Artemis fans may recognise
an old favourite who returns as the
villain,” said Colfer, “I can’t say any more
or the fairy lawyers will slap me with a
breach of confidentiality suit.”
The first novel of the series saw the
brainy son of an Irish crime-lord kidnap
a fairy in the hope of obtaining a ransom
of gold. However, Fowl got more than he
bargained for when the Lower Elements
Police Reconnaissance squad – LEPrecon
– were dispatched to foil his plans. Since
then our hero and his friends have taken
on the Russian mafia, faced a goblin
rebellion and journeyed to another
dimension.
The seventh book in the series will
see Fowl suffering from the effects of
dabbling in too much magic – he has
suddenly become nice and it’s up to the
fairies to bring him back to his old self
so that he can save their race from the
threat of discovery.
Colfer’s original inspiration for the
novels, which have sold more than 18
million copies, came from an unexpected
place.
“I saw a photo of my brother in his
Confirmation suit, as opposed to his
birthday suit,” the 45 year-old from
I think that many potentially great writers
are lost because they give up before perfecting
their style.
Wexford said, “he was wearing a little
suit and a cheeky grin and I thought he
looked like a little Bond villain - and the
germ of the idea for Artemis was born.”
He adds: “I grew up with fairies, not
literally, but in Ireland we are taught fairy
stories as part of mythology studies in
primary school, we called it storytelling.
“This was always my favourite part
of the day as a student and teacher.
So when I started to write, I gravitated
towards the magical.”
But don’t be fooled into expecting the
books to be filled with the stereotypical
fairies, best known for sitting on flowers,
waving magic wands.
The elves in Colfer’s novels are
technologically advanced and more akin
to aliens than mythological beings.
Artemis Fowl has won a number of
accolades including the British Children’s
Book of the Year. The first novel was
recently named as one of the top seven
children’s novels of the past seven
decades by Penguin, as part of the
publisher’s 70th birthday celebrations.
Colfer said: “It is a huge honour and
I am as thrilled as a kid sucking his first
lollipop.”
The script for a film of the books
has been completed and, according to
the author, “production is afoot”. The
finished movie will be hitting the big
screens during the next couple of years.
Originally a teacher, Colfer left his job
to write full-time and now lives in France
with his wife and two children.
“I have a nice stable in the garden
which we have turned into an office, so
I go out there, put on eighties music and
get down to it,” he said, “I am quite
disciplined and like to do several hours a
day with only three and a half hours off
for lunch and a nap.
“Sometimes it looks like I am sleeping
when I am actually constructing complex
plots.”
Author Interview
With the successes of teenage series
such as Harry Potter and Twilight more
people than ever are trying to break into
children’s literature.
Colfer had a piece of advice for Listed
readers on how to create the next big
thing:
“Be yourself. It may take years to find
yourself but keep going until you do.
“I think that many potentially great
writers are lost because they give up
before perfecting their style.”
As for his latest novel, Fowl fans need
not worry – The Atlantis Complex will not
be the last we hear of the fifteen year-old
genius.
“I reckon I will come back and do my
‘last battle’ effort in a couple of years,
just to tie up all the story arcs,” Colfer
said, “I will be sorry to leave it though,
Artemis has become a huge part of my
life.”
The Atlantis Complex (£12.99) is
available in all good bookshops.
Thinking of tying the knot? Listed’s Chantelle mcinnes explores some of the spectacular wedding
venues on offer in hampshire and dorset, from historic castles to country manor houses
CASTLES, STATELY HOMES
AND GROUNDS
For a venue with a sense of historic
intrigue, look no further than King
John’s House and Garden in Romsey.
The House once belonged to Romsey’s
Benedictine Monastery, and the same
sense of tranquillity can be felt today.
Weddings are set against the backdrop of
a Victorian terrace and garden filled with
pre 18th century plants.
Self-confessed foodies will be pleased
to know that Winchester Guildhall’s
reputation for high-quality cuisine at
weddings is pretty much unbeatable. They
also boast an outstanding selection of
rooms, set in an atmospheric, Victorian
building in the heart of the city, catering
for up to 150 people.
Chilworth Manor is also a smart
choice of venue, with cutting edge,
contemporary design. A rhododendron
and tree-lined drive lead up to the
entrance, and a deer circle and small
lake can be found on the South side of
the Manor. Noteworthy features of the
interior include a gorgeous, galleried
lounge with panelled walls and an open
fireplace. They are happy to cater to all
types of individual requirements, making
the big day a memorable occasion for all.
Autumn
Settings don’t come more unique
than the fairytale grounds of a castle.
Highcliffe Castle in Christchurch
holds the wedding ceremony in their
beautiful winter garden, with inclusive
use of the drawing room for up to
one and a half hours. Flowers are also
provided, and guests can use the castle
piano if they so wish.
Another castle to consider is Lulworth
Castle in Dorset, where there is an
option to select a medieval themed
banquet for the wedding reception. The
unique location and layout of the castle
adds a deep sense of authenticity to the
proceedings.
HOTELS
For a wedding with a sense of grandeur,
Botleigh Grange Hotel offers over 50
years of their experience and expertise
to assist with both the preparations
and main event. Their rosette awardwinning
dining room offers fine dining
and impeccable service. The picturesque
gardens provide a perfect backdrop for
photographs with two shimmering lakes.
The Thistle hotel overlooking Poole
Harbour offers wedding packages at an
affordable price, without compromising
on comfort and class. Further information
can be found at their Wedding Fayre
on Saturday 02 October, where event
coordinators are on hand to help with
enquiries and questions.
For another affordable option at a great
location, check out The Village Hotel’s
The Cumberland Hotel takes the
potential sting out of organising the
whole process, from planning details to
holding the reception.
A special day can also be had at
Bournemouth’s Highcliff Marriott
enjoy stunning sea views of the Dorset
Interview
Oliver Boot
Tell me about Bedroom Farce?
It’s a play about four couples in different
bedrooms, and explores different
relationships and models that you can
have. There’s the mum and dad, Kate
and Malcolm – who are newly weds,
Jan and Nick, who are upwardly mobile,
and then there’s myself - Trevor - and my
wife. We’re in the middle of some huge,
neurotic break-down, and live between
bedrooms causing chaos!
How did you draw the emotion to
play Trevor?
With any part you play you have to draw
from your own experiences and convince
the audience to suspend belief. Truth is
tantamount to everything you do, so you
have to draw from and recognise the
feelings you have. It’s funny – it’s the first
character I’ve played who’s so neurotic.
In real life I’m really chilled out!
You’ve played TV roles, too, on
programmes such as Two Pints
of Lager and a Packet of Crisps,
Hotel Babylon, Distant Shores and
Holby City. How does this differ to
theatre?
I’m a huge fan of film and television. I’m
a massive movie geek, and my walls at
home are filled with DVDs, much to the
despair of my fiancé!
TV is a much more intimate medium
and allows you to be that much more
complex and subtle. However, theatre
is lovely because it’s such a collective
experience and good for the soul. They’re
different and yet I’m not sure which one
I’d prefer one over the other.
What’s your favourite film?
On the Waterfront with Marlon Brando
– I’m huge Brando fan. He’s inspiring
to watch – especially in A Streetcar
Named Desire. A friend of mine had an
audition for Streetcar and I was spitting
fire as I was so desperate to play the
part! We had a few drinks and went
back to his flat to watch the film. Before
he turned it on, he said “You will feel
hugely inadequate when you watch this,”
18 Listed
and I did! Brando’s truth, brilliance and
ownership of the role is just incredible.
Who else inspires you?
I recently played a part alongside Mark
Strong in a Pixar Film ‘John Carter of
Mars’ [to be released 2012]. We were
playing the same role – he morphs into
me – and my brief was to study Mark
Strong for two months. I think he’s an
incredible actor – I’ve always admired
him. It’s one of those moments when
you finally meet your hero and he’s
everything you expect him to be and
more!
Have you always wanted to be an
actor?
Yeah – much to my parents’ despair;
since the age of about four, and I’ve
never stopped. My mum was a ballet
dancer and my dad a sculptor so they
probably saw it coming!
What’s been your favourite theatre
production and why?
A play by Howard Brenton called In
Extremis, which was at the Globe in
London. It’s one of the greatest love
stories, and is beautifully written. It’s
about Abelard, a philosopher and
superstar of the church, who falls in love
with Heloise, a girl who’s too young, and
who he has a baby with. He ends up
getting caught and castrated!
In 2006 you were asked to perform
Henry V for Her Majesty the Queen
and Prince Philip at a private dinner
party? How was that?
That was amazing. Actually, it happened
the same year I was at the Globe playing
Abelard. The American ambassador had
seen me play and asked me to perform
Henry V at a dinner party. One of the
party guests was on the board of the
Royal Shakespeare Company, and he
later called me and invited me to do the
same for the Queen and Prince Philip
at a private function at the American
Embassy. I was hugely nervous – it was
like back in the day of the 17th and 18th
Century when actors would be requested
to play at the palace! I had a glass of
champagne with the Queen afterwards.
She was a great conversationalist –
incredibly eloquent and well-read. It was
a real privilege.
“The Revival is theatre,” says Lord March. “The circuit is literally dressed up like a huge
film set, and that includes the competitors and spectators. Almost everyone is dressed
to the nines in fantastic 1950s creations, and the efforts people go to are amazing. But
equally, it’s quite easy to look the part in just smart classical clothing – it depends how
far you want to go.”
The Goodwood Revival is the only event that places motor racing into a carefully
Finding the ideal winter sun destination has just got easier –
thanks to Thomas Cook. during November they will be offering
weekly flights from Bournemouth airport to two of our most
popular winter sun destinations – Tenerife and Tunisia.
TENErIFE
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, and
has two very distinct characters. Go south for
sunshine and lively night-spots such as Playa
de las Americas, go north for dramatic scenery
and sophisticated resorts such as Puerto de la
Cruz. But wherever you stay, you must visit the
dormant volcano, Mount Teide in Las Canadas
National Park. Scenes from the film Planet of
the Apes were filmed on its slopes in the ashen
landscape of barren lava. At 12,000 ft it’s Spain’s
With its beautiful sandy beaches, fantastic year
round sunshine and an intriguing mix of
Arabic and French influences, there is so
much that is unique to Tunisia. And there’s a
wide range of resorts on offer. Skanes offers
a selection of good quality hotels situated on
a long, sandy beach; the country’s biggest
Beautiful Brows
- How to
Two things often upset me... seeing feet in beautiful
open toed shoes with unpainted toe nails, and unkempt
eyebrows! Sorry girls - I just see these as a basic beauty
sin!
As toenails can just be painted (or put away!) I thought I’d share a few top tips to
the DIY eyebrow shape. Groomed brows can shape your face, make your eyes appear
bigger and even knock a few years off...
1. To pLuCk or NoT To pLuCk?! If you have no time to get to a salon
for a brow wax or thread just stick to tweezers at home. Warm wax in your
microwave can be tricky to get to the right temperature and to get on where you
want it without your lashes getting in the way! If you have never invested in a
good pair of tweezers try any from the Tweezerman range (Boots or Superdrug.)
With slanted ones as opposed to pointy so you can get the strays lying flat to the
skin.
2. TwEEzE when you have just got out the shower or the bath, when your skin is
squeaky clean and the hairs will pop out more easily.
3. NEVEr ruSh - and work with the natural shape by aiming for the strays
underneath the bulk of the shape only.
4. uSE Your mIddLE aNd INdEx FINgEr of the other hand to hold
and gently stretch the skin as you gently pluck. Go from one side to the other,
taking a hair at a time.
5. doN’T TouCh Once you have the shape you want keep this free from
makeup, sun cream and heavy moisturisers and avoid touching for 48 hours so
the hair follicles don’t get clogged and any redness will minimise quicker.
Reef’s Jack Bessant
after a break away from the limelight, reef are back with their new tour, taking in
several South Coast hotspots including The Joiners in Southampton and The winchester in
Bournemouth. Bassist Jack Bessant chats to Listed’s Chantelle mcInnes about music, mellow
vibes and making waves in Boscombe.
In today’s era of manufactured bands
from talent shows, it’s refreshing to find
a group that worked their way up to the
top from scratch. Reef are most famously
known for their catchy single, “Place Your
Hands,” which reached the impressive
position of number 6 in the UK charts.
Their second album, Glow, ranked at
number 26 in Kerrang’s 100 Albums You
Must Hear Before You Die list. So what
seems to be the secret to their longevity?
“Just keep on going, really. Touring’s
what it’s all about,” says bassist Jack
Bessant. His enthusiasm for performing
is clearly evident; alongside regrouping
with Reef, he has also found the
time to form “Stringer Bessant,” an
acoustic double-act featuring himself
and lead singer of Reef, Gary Stringer.
When questioned on the issue of
musical progression, Bessant feels that
development is a positive thing: “Music’s
always evolving. You change and it
changes with you. Sound, lyrics, all of it.”
It is this adaptability which ensured
Reef’s return to the festival circuit this
year, rocking up at The Isle Of Wight
Festival and Glastonbury respectively.
Festivals are well-known for being a
wellied step into the realms of hedonism,
so was there a noticeable difference
in the vibe of the crowd? “Not really.
Everyone’s just there to have a good
time and enjoy themselves, regardless of
whether you’re performing at a club or
festival. The crowd become one.”
I love to support the smaller places, the
whole atmosphere and vibe is really welcoming. You
come back to places where you started off at and
there’s a real sense of belonging. Yeah, I’m up for it.
Bring it on!
This sense of community cohesion runs
deep, with Reef playing at the “Surfers
Against Sewage” Christmas Ball in 2001,
an event founded to raise awareness of
the necessity of coastal environmental
protection, whilst promoting surfing in
Dorset. Bessant can’t praise the initiative
highly enough: “It’s a really good cause.
I feel proud to have been part of it,
definitely.” But will he be trying out the
new artificial Surf Reef when he returns
to the West Country to perform this year?
“Yeah. I’d probably give it a go. Who
Knows?”
Reef won the critics’ appraisal with
their third album, “Rides,” and continued
to achieve considerable acclaim for their
single, “Superhero.” This single features
a video of an impromptu gig held at
Bessant’s Hoxton Square flat in London
one summertime. He was vacating the
property, and used the opportunity to
Interview
hold a small gig with a select guest list,
including Kerrang and NME magazines in
attendance.
Is there a reason behind the overall
propensity towards performing at more
intimate venues this year?
“I love to support the smaller places,
the whole atmosphere and vibe is really
welcoming. You come back to places
where you started off at and there’s a
real sense of belonging. Yeah, I’m up for
it. Bring it on!”
Reef will be performing at the Pyramids
The Saturdays
pop-beauties the Saturdays have just released their new album headlines. Listed’s ruth walker
talks to singer mollie king (far right) about fame, handling the press, and new collaborations
How would you describe your new
single Missing You?
Missing You is a power ballad with
strong lyrics and a great dance beat
behind it. But the song still maintains The
Saturdays style.
The Saturdays are nearing the top
chart position with the new single
Missing You, do you think you’ll
do the same with the new album
Headlines?
I would hope so, it would be a dream
come true. I know we’re doing really
well at the moment; we have a lot of
pre-orders for Headlines. It would be
incredible. We’ve got a really good fan
base, so I hope they all go out and buy it.
You seem to be on the go all the
time with performances and public
appearances. How do you unwind
after all that?
I just like to do normal things. I love
going out for breakfast, spending time at
home and seeing my friends and family. I
also love taking part in sport so I always
make time for it if I can.
After three years together do you
all still get along in the band?
Definitely, we know each other so well
now. I think that the girls know me
better than anyone else on the planet.
We didn’t know each other before The
Saturdays so we’ve become friends
through the band; we’ve just got closer
and closer.
What couldn’t you live without on
tour?
The one thing that I couldn’t cope
without on tour would be my mobile. I
get really homesick, so I like to be able
We’re really lucky; we’ve got a great fan base
who are really loyal. We’re not trying to be anything
other than what we are. We’re not trying to be too
cool, just sticking at what we’re good at, and that’s
making good pop songs.
to call up my mum and my boyfriend
whenever I can.
If you could collaborate with
anyone who would it be?
At the moment I think it would be Jason
Derülo. I really love him.
The Saturdays undeniably have
talent but what would you say is
the secret of your success?
We’re really lucky; we’ve got a great
fan base who are really loyal. We’re not
trying to be anything other than what
we are. We’re not trying to be too cool,
just sticking at what we’re good at, and
that’s making good pop songs.
How do you deal with any negative
press that you receive?
We get it every now and then. There’s
always some negative comment on
YouTube and in the papers, but you just
have to learn to cope with it. It does
kind of knock your confidence and as
much as you try to ignore it, you can’t
help it. You just have to try and forget
about it.
Is there anything new that The
Saturdays are working on that will
get their fans excited?
We’ve recently been writing with Taio
Interview
Cruz and Alphabeat which was really
cool. That won’t be on the new album
but it’s due for release in the near future.
It’s definitely something for our fans to
look forward to.
How are you finding being filmed
for the band’s fly on the wall
documentary ‘The Saturdays: 24/7’
for ITV2?
It’s quite surreal, at first it was a bit
overwhelming but now I’ve just got used
to it. It doesn’t even feel like they’re
there anymore. But I think that’s the best
way to do it because that way you get to
see the real us and not an act.
Missing You and The Saturdays’ new
album Headlines is now out. The
Saturdays: 24/7 is showing on ITV2 and
is set to air in September.
Stieg Larsson
The Girl Who Played With Fire
his ‘millennium’ book series has made him the second best-selling author worldwide in recent years behind
only J.k. rowling - but Swedish writer Stieg Larsson did not live to see his stories become a success. Listed
looks at the fascinating story behind the man who created ‘The girl who played with Fire’.
Stieg Larsson was the second best-selling
author worldwide in 2008 and is the
biggest selling author in Europe this year
- not bad for someone who sadly died of
a heart attack in November 2004.
The cruel twist of fate that took
Larsson at the age of 50 has seen him
miss out on his fortune and thrust him
further into worldwide public interest.
His three books from the ‘Millennium’
series, ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’,
‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’ and ’The
Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest’, have
been adapted into films and released
worldwide to huge box office and DVD
sales.
And now his relatives are embroiled in
an emotional controversy over his estate,
battling for rights with his long-term
partner Eva Gabrielsson.
As a young man Larsson made a will
that was declared invalid and therefore
destroyed any legal guidelines as to how
the fortune, estimated at £20 million,
should be distributed.
Swedish law dictates that the brother
and father of Larsson should be left the
proceeds, despite him having been with
partner Eva for 30 years.
Recently Gabrielsson was offered two
million euros to settle on the rights to
an incomplete fourth story in the series
she still retains on her deceased partner’s
laptop.
She refused this offer from the
Larssons, though, stating that she
wanted to manage the rights of the
series and wasn’t just interested in
money. So the parties are locked in
a stalemate that fans fear will mean
the fourth book in the ‘Millennium’
series, with ten rumoured to have been
planned, will never reach fruition.
It is just one element of a fascinating
life now being exposed as more and
more people read his books and want to
Some proclaim a man with no previous success
in fiction could never have written a trilogy that has
sold 25 million copies and grossed $100 million at box
offices worldwide.
28 Listed
know the man behind the success.
Larsson was politically active, and was
said to be a target of many right-wing
activists, having to live his later life
almost in secret, in a house with blinds
that never opened.
The series that brought him
posthumous success in itself is a
hotly contested subject - with some
proclaiming a man with no previous
success in fiction could never have
written a trilogy that has sold 25 million
copies and grossed $100 million at box
offices worldwide.
Those close to him say he wrote at
night when he couldn’t sleep, and his
family tells of how they were kept awake
by the sound of Larsson on his first
typewriter at the age of 12.
In his early career Larsson has
expressed an interest in becoming a
journalist, which explains the undertones
of scandal and corruption in his
bestsellers; books that have made him
famous long after his life ended, adding
a unique angle to this shy author’s
stardom.
All these facets of his life go to making
Larsson a remarkable character - just
as enthralling as those he created in his
stories.

Noomi Rapace
many actresses would have shied away from the controversial role of Lisbeth
Salander in ‘The girl who played with Fire’, but not 31-year-old Noomi rapace.
already a fan of Stieg Larsson’s ‘millennium’ series, she explains the extraordinary
lengths she went to to land the Swedish oscar-winning role.
In the film you play suspected
murderer Lisbeth. Tell us about her
character
She’s very strong, but not in every way.
She can survive almost anything but
when it comes to love, she doesn’t
know how to protect herself. She’s been
so lonely for such a long time that she
doesn’t have any experience of love, and
so it becomes the most dangerous thing
in the world for her.
What was it about the script that
made you want to do ‘The Girl Who
Played With Fire’?
Actually, I said yes before there was any
script - I read the books a couple of years
before they even decided to do a film
of it so when they asked me I said yes
right away.
When you read the books, did you
ever imagine that you would be
playing Lisbeth?
Never, it was totally the opposite. I read
in the paper that they were going to do a
film of the first book and I was so upset
because I was sure that they wouldn’t
even think of me. I was convinced they
would consider me too girly or too cute
and I was almost right because the
director, Niels Arden Oplev, now admits
that had he seen some pictures of me
before we met, he would have said no.
But when we did meet I said: ‘Believe
me, I will become Lisbeth. I will transform
myself into her.’
What about your appearance did
you change for the audition?
I borrowed some of my husband’s
clothes, but that was it, I had to work
hard to convince him I could change. I
told him: ‘I don’t want anyone else to
come and drive a motorcycle instead of
me, and I didn’t want a stuntwoman to
do the fighting scenes instead of me’. I
exercised a lot, mostly Thai boxing and
kickboxing. The director could see that I
was serious and he believed I could find
Lisbeth inside me.
Lisbeth has a very distinctive look
with tattoos and piercings - were
those real?
The piercings were, but not the tattoos
luckily! They were transfers that you
put on with water like the ones you get
when you’re a child - although much
more expensive! They were around
2000-3000 Swedish crowns (£170-
£260) for each tattoo and we had to put
them on every day.
People think of Sweden as being
very tolerant and laidback, which
adds to this film’s shock factor
doesn’t it?
Everybody says that - this picture of
Sweden surprises them. Sweden is a fair
country in many ways but it’s often just
on the surface. People are determined to
keep up this nice attitude, even though
everything might be chaotic at home
or you might have had a big argument
with your boyfriend. Everybody stays in
line but, eventually, someone will always
burst out.
Would you reprise the role of
Lisbeth in the Hollywood remake?
No, it wouldn’t be right for me to play
her again. I’ve done my Lisbeth, so it’s
up to somebody else to try now. Having
Larsson started to write another book
in the series. It’s not finished but his
girlfriend has it on his computer. So who
knows?
What’s next for you?
I’m doing a film in Norway with a
director called Pål Sletaune. The film’s
called Babycall, and it’s a psychological
thriller where I play a mother who’s on
the run from her ex-husband and she’s
trying to start a new life. The script
messes with reality because, after a
while, you don’t know what is real and
what is in her head. It’s a complicated
The world’s best-loved musical, The Sound of Music, is coming to Bournemouth direct from the London Palladium. This lavish
and critically acclaimed production tells the uplifting true story of the Von Trapp family’s flight across the mountains from the
Nazis. Perfect for the whole family, the unforgettable score includes memorable songs such as My Favourite Things, Do-Re-
Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and title song The Sound of Music.
Only Fools & Horses favourites Boycie and Marlene, played by John Challis and Sue Holderness, star in this one-off evening
with two of Britain’s best-loved sitcom characters. Whilst re-living some of the show’s best moments the pair, also from
spin-off ‘The Green, Green Grass’, will be on hand at the Tivoli on 23 September to answer questions after performing
some comedy routines. Tickets are priced at £18.50, and can be bought from the box office on 01202 885566.
morECamBE
The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special in 1977 attracted some 28 million viewers. Since Eric Morecambe’s death
in 1984, the comedy duo are as popular as ever, having been voted into the number two position in a 2006 poll of TV’s
greatest stars.
Written by Tim Whitnall, Morecambe is a deliriously funny memorial play that celebrates many highlights of the comic’s
career, from Morecambe Pier to Glenda Jackson, with laughs to the very last breath.
New Art Club @ Pavilion Dance
The new regional dance centre at
Bournemouth Pavilion presents This Is
Now on 11 September, the latest work
from New Art Club (aka Tom Roden
and Pete Shenton). Previously likened
to comedian/musician Tim Minchin
and described as the ‘Dame Margot
Fonteyn(s) of comedy’, New Art Club’s
shows are a mixture of comedy and
dance – serious and silly in equal
measure.
In 1983, Tom illegally taped the very
first ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’
LP onto a C60 cassette. Twenty five
years later he played it to Pete and
they made a show about it. Britain’s
Funniest Dancers deconstruct this
classic album to inspire new moves
that shed their own twisted light on
then, the future and now.
The Pavilion Dance opening weekend
takes place on 04 & 05 September.
Curley is entirely self-taught and the
unique style he has developed has been
The exhibition runs from 24th
Book news
oxFam NEEdS Your hELp
The Oxfam Distribution Centre in Winton, Bournemouth has just acquired a system
that allows them to list literally hundreds of books a day by scanning their barcodes.
With enough shelving to hold 9,000 books the staff have so far filled a quarter of
the available space. Books are selling fast, with titles flying off across the world as
far as New Zealand. They now need your help as they need more donations and help
with posting out the orders.
If Oxfam can fill the shelves and keep them full the amount of money generated
each year will be enough to fund development projects and help with emergencies
such as the flooding in Pakistan. To help visit http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shops/
“The discovery of a 13th century settlement in the region has put the site on the
Johnny Cash tribute @ Tivoli
On Friday 10 September the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne will pay homage to the
life and music of the legendary Johnny Cash courtesy of Roger Dean and his show
The Johnny Cash Story.
Roger Dean rose to fame following his BBC television debut at the age of
14 and he secured his first of many radio broadcasts soon after performing the
music of Johnny Cash, so who better to recreate the magic of the world’s most
loved outlaw? When asked to describe his show Dean explains that “rather than
attempting to mimic the great Johnny Cash, myself and my band have developed
our own style over the years treating audiences to a slick, tried and tested show
which has taken in some of the biggest cities in the world”.
For those who have seen the Hollywood blockbuster Walk The Line starring
Reece Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix then you are guaranteed to enjoy over
two hours of storytelling magic featuring Johnny Cash’s biggest hits: I Walk The
Line, Ring of Fire, Get Rhythm, Folsom Prison Blues, Man In Black, A Boy Named
Sue and Hurt.
The performance will commence at 7:30pm, tickets are £16 and available from
the Tivoli Theatre Box Office on 01202 885566 – book early to avoid missing out
In Jonathan Cotton, Bournemouth has a long-time consummate performer;
this latest album (with a 30-date September tour) is joyfully active for one who
normally gigs as a solo act. The June-launched single Tonight’s The Night sets a
mellow mood, with subtle synth work providing a gentle backdrop, before the CD
launches into punchier and up-tempo Destination. Favorite tracks include the rocky
Awake!, optimistic Busy Road and anthemic Can’t Let Go. The mood created by the
overall ordering is of waves alternately lapping at your feet and crashing over your
head. Find Jonathan gigging to appreciate his foreign language fluency! http://
Did you know that Bournemouth
has the largest recovery community in
Europe? Sadly only a small percentage
complete the journey. Many return to
their old lives with only jails, institutions
and death to look forward to, others drop
out of treatment and congregate in the
suburbs. But there is hope and a group
of pioneering ex-alcoholics and drug
addicts called Clean Time Soundsystem
are encouraging others on the road to
freedom by sharing their talents as DJs
and musicians.
Founder member Tommy Mixx explains;
“It’s all about believing in people
and giving them an opportunity. We
throw drug and drink-free parties in
Bournemouth that cost nothing to get
in. It is beautiful to see people - who
probably for the first time in years haven’t
any drink or drugs in their system - lose
their inhibitions, free from care, dancing
to the music. Our hope is that the person
who has just arrived, who is confused,
emotional and low on confidence can
start to build up a network of support
and friendship in our flourishing recovery
community.”
Clean Time’s volunteer ethos is to give
freely of their time and they support their
activities by hiring out the sound system.
DJ Micky enthuses: “We do it because
we love the music and it’s a chance to
give back and make a difference to the
community. We are just so grateful to
have our lives back.”
For more information about Clean Time
Soundsystem or to support the project
by hiring the system and lights e-mail
